You can add a save from USB to a PS5 only when it belongs to a PS4 game. Connect a FAT or exFAT USB drive, then go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS4) > Copy or Delete from USB Drive and copy the file. Sony does not support copying PS5-game saves from a PS5 console to USB; use PlayStation Plus cloud storage or a supported console-to-console transfer instead.
First, check whether the save is for the PS4 or PS5 version
The method depends on the game version the save belongs to, not just the console you are using. Sony supports USB copying for PS4-game saves. For PS5-game saved data, Sony lists cloud storage and console transfer, and says it cannot be copied from a PS5 console to a USB drive. See Sony’s PS5 storage guide and data-transfer guide.
A game with both PS4 and PS5 versions may handle cross-generation saves differently. Do not assume that importing a PS4 save makes it usable by the PS5 version; check that game’s own supported save-transfer process.
Copy a PS4 game save from USB to PS5
- Use a commercially available USB drive formatted as FAT or exFAT. It must not be formatted as USB extended storage for this task. Sony notes that not all USB devices work with PS5.
- Connect the drive to the PS5.
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS4).
- Select Copy or Delete from USB Drive.
- Choose the game, select the save file or files, then choose Copy.
If a save for that game is already on the console, the USB copy can replace it. Check which version you want to keep before confirming a replacement.

Choose a supported route for PS5-game saves

Use PlayStation Plus cloud storage
On PS5, open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings, then select Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4) and use the upload or download options. A PS4 save stored in the cloud must be manually downloaded to PS5 console storage. PS5 saves can sync automatically if auto-sync is enabled and the console’s rest-mode internet setting is configured; the game must be closed or the console must enter rest mode.
Sony’s support pages state cloud-storage limits of 100 GB for PS5 saved data, 100 GB for PS4 saved data, and 1,000 PS4 saved-data files. These are page-stated service limits, not a promise that one save can occupy the full capacity. See Sony’s PlayStation Plus cloud-storage guide.

Transfer from another console
Sony supports transferring data from a PS4 or another PS5 to a destination PS5. For a PS4 save, you can also copy it from the source console to a USB drive and then follow the USB import steps above. Check the destination console’s existing save before transferring, since a copy can replace saved data.

Sony says saves for streamed PlayStation Plus games are stored on PlayStation, while saves for downloaded games are stored on the console.
