Start in the game’s Settings or Options and look for a language control. If there isn’t one, check the game’s launcher or your console’s system language. The right method depends on the game, platform, and whether that version supports English.
Try the game’s own language setting first
- Open the game’s Settings or Options.
- Look for Language, Language and Region, or a similar menu.
- Select English and apply the change. If the game separates text, subtitles, and voice/audio, check each control you want to change.
Menu names differ by title. For example, Epic’s Fortnite instructions say to open Settings, select the Game tab, choose a language under Language and Region, and apply it: Fortnite language instructions.
Change the language for one Steam game
- Open your Steam Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open Language and select English.
This per-game setting is separate from the Steam client’s display language. Steam may download language files before the game is ready to play. Check the game’s Steam Store page to see which languages that release supports. See Steam’s language settings instructions.
When the game uses your console’s language
Some games take their language from the console rather than offering an in-game selector. This only works if the game supports English. Nintendo Support explains: “The language for a game or software application will default to the language setting that has been selected on the console, so long as the intended language is supported by the game or software application.” See Nintendo’s Switch system-language instructions.

On Nintendo Switch, changing the system language requires a restart and closes suspended software. The setting affects the console, not just one game. Other consoles have their own system-language menus; for Rocket League specifically, the publisher documents system-language routes for PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch in its Rocket League language instructions.
Epic Games Store and other PC launchers
Do not assume that changing a launcher’s interface language will change every game. Epic documents a game-specific command-line argument for Rocket League: -language=xxx, with INT listed for English. That is a Rocket League method, not a universal Epic setting. For another game, check its support instructions for the exact language control or launch option.

If English is missing or the change does not work
- Check language support for your exact release. The game may not offer English in your region or edition. Steam lists supported languages on the Store page; Nintendo’s automatic selection applies only when the game supports the selected language.
- Check the scope of the setting. A game-specific option changes that title; a console or launcher setting may affect other software too.
- Look for separate language controls. A game may expose separate choices for text, subtitles, or voice/audio, but not every title does.
- Allow for downloads or a restart. Steam may need to download language files, and changing the Switch system language requires a restart.
- Match instructions to your version. Menu labels and available languages can vary by game, platform, region, and software version.
If these steps do not match what you see, the precise route depends on the game’s name and platform (including console or launcher) and, where relevant, its edition or region.
