You can’t switch Steam to US dollars with a standalone currency setting. Steam ties store currency to your store country. If you have moved to the United States, you can select the United States in your cart or at checkout and complete a purchase with a US payment method. If you’re only traveling, your store country ordinarily stays the same.
When can you change your Steam store country?
Steam says your store country is based on the location of your first purchase. To change it, you must currently reside in the country you select and use a local payment method that Steam accepts there. The country selector appears in the cart or during checkout when your current location differs from your account’s store country. See Steam’s Store Country guidance.

Steam limits store-country changes to once every three months. If you regularly move between countries, Steam recommends using the country where you primarily reside.
How to switch to the US store after moving
- Check your current country in Steam Account Details.
- While in the United States, add an item to your cart and continue to the cart or checkout. If your location differs from your current store country, look for the country selector.
- Select the United States, then choose a payment method available for purchases in the US.
- Complete the purchase with that US payment method. Steam says the store country must match where you currently reside.
What if you’re traveling?
Travel alone does not change your Steam store country. Steam says the store continues to show prices for the account’s current country while you’re abroad. For a purchase during a trip, use a payment method that matches that store country. A new user who created an account while traveling cannot temporarily set the store to their home country under Steam’s guidance; they need to return to their country of residence to set it.

If the currency looks wrong or a purchase fails
Wallet currency mismatch while abroad
For the specific Steam Wallet currency-mismatch error, Steam advises trying the purchase with the payment instrument alone rather than using Wallet funds. If that does not work, contact Steam Support. If you landed on a different regional Steam Store page through a link, the displayed currency may differ for that reason.
General purchase troubleshooting
- Try purchasing through the Steam client instead of the website, or vice versa.
- Disable any IP proxy or VPN software. Steam says transactions initiated through anonymous proxies are declined.
- Use a payment method that matches the account’s current store country.
Steam’s Purchasing Issues guidance covers these general steps.

Can Wallet codes or CD keys change the currency?
No. Steam says locally available Steam-compatible CD keys or Wallet codes may be alternatives for buying games, but neither can change the store-country setting. Steam’s statement is explicit: “CD Keys and Steam Wallet Codes cannot be used to change your store country setting.”
Region restrictions are a separate issue from currency. Steam says most products bought directly from Steam have no region restrictions, though some gifts have restrictions marked on their store pages. CD-key restrictions vary by publisher, so check the seller or publisher’s terms before buying a key. See Steam’s region-restrictions guidance.

Why do some Steam stores use USD?
Steam announced that Argentina and Turkey would move to USD pricing on November 20, with separate LATAM-USD and MENA-USD pricing regions. Steam cited exchange-rate volatility, fees, taxes, and logistical difficulties maintaining payment methods and current prices. Developers choose their games’ prices. This regional pricing policy does not give individual users a general option to switch currency regardless of residence. Read Steam’s USD pricing notice.
