How to Fix a 60 FPS Cap in Fortnite

A 60 FPS reading may be a lobby limit, V-Sync, Fortnite’s frame-rate cap, or a display or driver setting. Check them in order and test in a match.

If Fortnite stays at 60 FPS, first check whether you are looking at the lobby or a match. In a match on PC, turn off Fortnite’s V-Sync and check its Frame Rate Limit; then apply the settings and test again. A 60 FPS ceiling can also come from a 60 Hz display or a graphics-driver setting, so no single change fixes every case.

Check whether the cap is only in the lobby

Fortnite limits lobby frame rate to 60 or 120 FPS depending on the window and rendering mode, according to Epic Games Support. A lobby reading of 60 therefore does not prove that the same limit applies during play. Test in an actual match after changing a setting.

Change Fortnite’s display settings

  1. From the lobby, open the Player Profile icon and choose Settings.
  2. Open the Display tab.
  3. Set V-Sync to Off.
  4. Check Frame Rate Limit. Choose the cap you want, or UNLIMITED to remove Fortnite’s in-game limit. Epic’s current selectable limit tops out at 360 FPS; that setting is not a performance guarantee.
  5. Choose Apply, then test the frame rate in a match.

Epic says V-Sync matches Fortnite’s frame rate to the monitor’s refresh rate. If the display is running at 60 Hz, that can explain a 60 FPS ceiling. NVIDIA describes the same synchronization behavior in its FrameView 1.2 guide.

Check the display’s refresh rate

Confirm that your operating system is set to a refresh rate your monitor supports. A display running at 60 Hz cannot show more than 60 distinct refreshes per second, even if the game renders more frames. Epic’s 2026 PC settings guidance recommends a 120 Hz, 144 Hz, or higher gaming monitor for the higher-refresh setup it describes. This is an optional hardware consideration, not a fix for a game or driver limit; verify your system, resolution, and connection support the mode you want.

If Fortnite’s settings do not explain the limit

Graphics software can impose a frame-rate limit or force synchronization independently of Fortnite. Inspect the settings for your GPU vendor for a frame limiter or forced V-Sync. NVIDIA’s older FrameView 1.2 guide identifies NVIDIA Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings as a place to check V-Sync, but driver menus and controls vary by vendor and software version; do not treat that path as universal.

Choose between a higher cap and smoother presentation

Turning V-Sync off may let the game render above the monitor’s refresh rate, but it can also produce screen tearing. A higher in-game cap also does not mean your PC can sustain it: performance depends on the hardware and the scene. If changing the cap causes stuttering or frame-rate drops, Epic advises restoring the original settings. For a high-refresh display, Epic also discusses FreeSync (AMD) and G-Sync (NVIDIA) as variable-refresh options, but neither guarantees removal of a 60 FPS cap.
