Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse Alienware Command Center (AWCC) to change AlienFX lighting: open the FX/AlienFX controls, select your computer or peripheral and its lighting zone, choose a color or RGB value, then save or apply the theme. The labels differ between AWCC 6.x and 5.x, and some Alienware models have single-color, fixed, or no configurable lighting.
Before you start
These instructions apply to RGB or other configurable LEDs on an Alienware laptop, desktop, keyboard, mouse, headset, display, or chassis. AWCC only shows compatible Alienware hardware; a product without AlienFX support may not appear. Some laptops have no backlit keyboard, some keyboards use one fixed color, and the number of controllable zones and effects varies by model.
- Identify your exact model or Service Tag and use its Dell Support page.
- Install the latest AWCC package and required Dell drivers for that product. Dell recommends enabling Microsoft Store updates, updating the BIOS, closing conflicting applications, and having internet access during installation. See Dell’s installation guidance.
- Connect an external keyboard, mouse, or headset before opening AWCC. Wireless devices need a charged battery and working receiver or cable.
Lighting is not screen color. AlienFX changes LEDs. Windows Display settings, your monitor’s on-screen menu, and GPU software control brightness, HDR, color temperature, and calibration.
Change Alienware colors in AWCC 6.x
Dell’s AWCC 6.x guide lists version 6.13.8.0, dated April 2026 when checked on August 18, 2026; Dell may publish a newer build. Download from your own product’s Dell Support page rather than a generic third-party package. The current overview is in Dell’s AWCC 6.x documentation.
#1 Best Overall
- Adjustable Lighting: Control the LED strip lights with a remote control for dynamic color changes and animations.
- Compatible with Popular Motherboards: Works with Asus Aura, Gigabyte RGB Fusion, MSI Mystic Light, and ASRock RGB LED.
- Easy Installation: Magnetic backing and double-sided adhesive allow for secure mounting on any flat surface without screws or clips.
- Dimmable and Adjustable Speed: 5-level brightness in static mode and adjustable speed in dynamic mode for customizable lighting.
- Includes Key Controller and Extension Cables: Get a remote control, 2 extension cables, and a 5V SATA connection cable to connect multiple LED strips.
- Open AWCC. Open Start, search for Alienware Command Center, and launch it. After an installation or update, allow time for device detection.
- Open lighting. Select FX or AlienFX. In AWCC 6.x this may be presented as the FX Ecosystem; its device view is described in Dell’s FX Ecosystem guide.
- Choose the device. Select the laptop, desktop, keyboard, mouse, headset, display, or other detected Alienware product.
- Select a zone. Click the desired area in the device image. Depending on the model, you may select the whole keyboard, keyboard regions, individual or grouped keys, the Alienware head logo, rear vents, a mouse logo or wheel, or another predefined zone. Multi-select and quick-select options appear only where supported.
- Choose a color. Pick a palette color. If the interface exposes RGB entry, enter red, green, and blue values, normally from 0 through 255. AWCC’s documented options include palette and RGB selection, but not every model provides both; see Dell’s AlienFX controls.
- Select an effect. For one steady color, choose Static or Solid when available. Other hardware may offer breathing, pulse, rainbow or spectrum, color cycle, wave, morph, or system-triggered effects.
- Set appearance. Adjust brightness and, for animated effects, tempo or speed, duration, and direction if those controls are shown.
- Save or apply. Choose Save, Save Theme, Apply, or the equivalent button. Name the preset if prompted, then confirm the physical lighting changes.
Change colors in AWCC 5.x
Older installations use a different layout. Follow the labels visible in your copy rather than assuming the 5.x menu exists in AWCC 6.x.
- Open Alienware Command Center.
- Click FX at the top, then open Lighting.
- Select the device and one or more zones in the device image or numbered callouts.
- Choose an effect and a palette color, or select the RGB-values option when offered.
- Enter the red, green, and blue values if supported.
- Adjust brightness, tempo, or duration when available.
- Click Save Theme. Dell documents this sequence in its AWCC 5.x lighting procedure.
Device-specific differences
Built-in laptop keyboard and chassis
AWCC controls only the zones the laptop exposes. A model may separate keyboard regions, the Alienware logo, power button, or chassis accents, or may provide only a fixed-color backlight.
External keyboard, mouse, and headset
Connect the peripheral and install its compatible AWCC and peripheral components. Basic input can work before the software is installed, while lighting and other customization require supported software and firmware. Dell’s supported-device guidance is at this keyboard and mouse guide.
Display color
To change a monitor’s picture color, use Windows display settings, the monitor’s on-screen display, or GPU software. AWCC AlienFX controls the monitor’s LEDs only where that display exposes supported lighting features; it is not a general display-calibration tool.

Chain design, you can lengthen the length by adding more strips.
Create a game-specific lighting theme
Use a game association when lighting should change only while a particular game runs. For an always-on color, use a normal system preset instead.
- Open AWCC’s Games section.
- Select a game or create a new game theme.
- Open the FX window and select the computer or peripheral zones.
- Assign colors and effects, then save the theme.
- Associate the saved theme with the selected game.
A game profile can override your system preset, so check its association when colors change on launch. Dell’s quick guide covers game themes at this link.
If the lighting does not change
| Symptom | First check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| No FX or AlienFX option | AWCC installation, version, and model support | Install the correct Service Tag-specific AWCC package and drivers; unsupported products will not gain new lighting controls. |
| Keyboard or mouse missing | USB, receiver, cable, switch, battery, and compatibility | Reconnect, try another USB port, restart Windows, update the device software, then reinstall AWCC if necessary. |
| Lights are off or very dim | GO DIM, GO DARK, and preset brightness | Open FX, disable those options if enabled, and raise brightness. Dell lists them as specific causes in its FX light troubleshooting article. |
| Software changes but hardware does not | Correct device and zone, saved preset, power or sleep mode | Save a simple solid-color preset first; then check game overrides, stealth or power-saving modes, firmware, and updates. |
| AWCC stopped after Windows, driver, or hardware changes | BIOS and Dell drivers | Shut down and restart, update BIOS from Dell Drivers & Downloads, then uninstall and reinstall AWCC as Dell recommends. |
| Only one color is available | Hardware specification | The LED system may be single-color or fixed-zone; software cannot add RGB capability that the hardware lacks. |
Dell notes that AWCC can show no devices when no compatible Alienware product is connected or when the connected product has no configurable AlienFX features. See the device-connection guidance.
Clean-reinstall AWCC as a last resort
Use this only after restarting, reconnecting, updating, and ordinary reinstall attempts fail. Record or screenshot custom themes first: cleanup can remove saved profiles and other AWCC settings.

Can I change each keyboard key individually?
Only if that keyboard and its AWCC integration expose individual-key or grouped-key zones. Otherwise AWCC limits you to the predefined zones shown in the device image.
Can I change the color without Alienware Command Center?
Model-specific keyboard shortcuts may cycle built-in effects, but they are not a universal way to select precise zones and RGB values. AWCC is the general supported method.
Why does my color reset when I launch a game?
A game-specific AWCC theme is probably overriding the system preset. Check the game’s association in AWCC’s Games section or remove that association.
