Open Library → right-click the game → Properties → General → Launch Options and enter the exact argument supported by that game. For GoldSrc and Source titles, Steam documents -dxlevel [level]; for third-party games, use the developer’s instructions or the game’s own graphics settings.
There is no universal Steam command for DirectX 11
Steam does not provide a game-independent -dx11 switch. You can try to force DirectX 11 only when the particular game supports a DirectX 11 launch argument or graphics setting. Steam passes launch options to the game; it does not validate the option or add renderer support that the game and graphics hardware do not have.

For Valve’s GoldSrc and Source games, Steam documents the engine-specific -dxlevel option. For most third-party Steam games, you must use the launch argument documented by that game’s developer—or select DirectX 11 in the game’s own launcher or graphics menu.
How to add a DirectX 11 launch option in Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Stay on the General tab.
- Find the Launch Options field.
- Enter the exact renderer argument supported by that game. If you use multiple arguments, separate them with spaces.
- Close the Properties window and start the game.
Steam’s launch-options feature is useful for changing settings before startup and troubleshooting incompatible video settings. However, Steam does not tell you whether a flag is valid for the selected game. An unsupported option may simply do nothing, or it may cause the game to fail to start.

When -dxlevel applies
Steam’s commonly documented DirectX launch option is:
-dxlevel [level]
Steam lists values including 80, 81, 90, 95, and 98. These options are documented for GoldSrc and Source engine games. They are not a universal Steam command and generally do not apply to third-party titles.
Do not assume that -dxlevel 110 is an officially documented equivalent of DirectX 11. The documented option and values do not establish a universal DirectX 11 syntax for every Source game, and they say nothing about games made with Unreal Engine, Unity, a proprietary engine, or a separate launcher.

What to do in a third-party game
The exact game title is essential. Steam hosts games using many different engines, and each engine or launcher can parse different command-line arguments. Use this sequence:
- Identify the game and its launcher. Some titles read Steam launch options directly; others pass them to a publisher launcher or ignore options they do not recognize.
- Check the developer’s official support documentation. Search for DirectX 11, renderer, graphics API, launch options, or command-line arguments.
- Look in the game’s graphics settings. The API may be exposed as a choice such as DirectX 11, DirectX 12, Vulkan, or Automatic rather than as a command-line flag.
- Add only a verified argument. Do not paste a generic
-dx11flag into Steam simply because it works for another game. - Test the result. Check whether the game reports a different graphics API, starts past the original error, or changes its available settings. If there is no visible change, the option may not be supported or may not have been read.
Why a launch option cannot solve every DirectX 11 problem
DirectX is the programming interface, while a Direct3D feature level describes a defined set of graphics capabilities. When a game creates its graphics device, it selects a feature level that the GPU and driver can provide. The game, operating system, driver, and hardware therefore all matter.
A launch option can request a renderer only if the game has implemented that option and the system can provide the required API and feature level. It cannot create missing GPU capabilities. The presence of DirectX support in Windows does not guarantee that an older graphics card exposes every Direct3D feature level required by a game.

Troubleshooting by symptom
| What happens | What it usually means | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The game starts exactly as before | The flag may be unsupported, misspelled, ignored, or intended for a different engine. | Remove the generic flag and verify the game’s official syntax. |
| The game says Direct3D 11 or a required feature level is unavailable | The game or system cannot provide the requested graphics capability. | Check the GPU model, graphics driver, operating system, and the game’s requirements. |
| The game becomes unstable or will not launch | The launch option may be incompatible with the game or its current configuration. | Open Steam Library → right-click the game → Properties → General → Launch Options, remove the added option, and launch again. |
| The title has its own launcher or graphics API menu | The renderer may be selected outside Steam. | Use the game’s launcher or graphics settings, or follow the developer’s documented command-line instructions. |
Check the hardware before considering an upgrade
If the game reports that the required Direct3D feature level is unavailable, first identify the installed GPU and update or reinstall its official graphics driver as appropriate. Also check the game’s minimum requirements and the operating system it supports.
A Steam launch option cannot make an unsupported GPU expose a feature level it lacks. Only after confirming the game’s requirement and the current GPU’s capabilities should you consider a DirectX 11-compatible graphics card. Buying hardware is not the normal answer to an unknown or incorrectly typed launch option, and it should not be the first step without the game’s error message and GPU model.
How to undo the change
- Open Steam Library.
- Right-click the affected game and choose Properties.
- On General, clear the Launch Options field or remove only the argument you added.
- Close the window and start the game with its default configuration.
If the game still fails after removing the option, continue with the game’s official troubleshooting steps; do not assume the launch option was the only cause.

Common mistakes
- Using
-dx11as though it were a Steam-wide command. - Applying Source-engine options to an unrelated third-party game.
- Treating
-dxlevel 110as a universally documented DirectX 11 setting. - Assuming that installing a DirectX runtime can add unsupported GPU hardware features.
- Adding several unverified flags at once, making it impossible to identify which one changed the behavior.
- Buying a graphics card before checking the exact game, error message, GPU, driver, and required feature level.
Quick answer
Open Steam → Library → right-click the game → Properties → General → Launch Options, then enter the renderer argument documented for that specific game. Do not use -dx11 unless the game’s developer explicitly supports it. For GoldSrc and Source games, Steam documents -dxlevel [level], but that option is engine-specific and is not a universal way to force DirectX 11 across Steam.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does -dx11 work for every Steam game?
No. Steam passes launch options to games, but it does not provide a universal -dx11 command. The game must implement and recognize the argument.

Only when the game supports it. Steam documents -dxlevel [level] for GoldSrc and Source games, with common values including 80, 81, 90, 95, and 98. It is not a general command for third-party games.

Can a Steam launch option fix an unsupported graphics card?
No. A launch option can request a renderer, but it cannot add Direct3D feature levels that the GPU and driver do not support.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Steam cannot universally force DirectX 11. Use the game’s documented launch argument or graphics setting; use -dxlevel only where the relevant GoldSrc or Source game supports it, and remove the option if it causes instability.
