Not exactly: Epic Games is the company, while the Epic Games Launcher is its desktop game launcher and the Epic Games Store is its digital storefront. In everyday conversation, “Epic Games” often means the launcher, but the names describe different parts of Epic’s gaming ecosystem.
What is Epic Games?
Epic Games, Inc. is a game and technology company. Its products and services include the Epic Games Store and Launcher, Fortnite, Rocket League, Fall Guys, Unreal Engine and Epic Online Services. An Epic account can connect a user to several Epic products, but the account is distinct from the launcher and the store. Epic’s Epic Games Store FAQ explains its account and store ecosystem.
This distinction matters if you are looking for an app to install a game: search for the Epic Games Launcher, not a product simply named “Epic Games.”
What is the difference between the Epic Games Store and Launcher?
The Epic Games Store is the marketplace. You can browse its catalog, buy games, and claim promotional free games through the store’s website or Epic’s applications. A game claimed during a free promotion remains in the account library after the offer ends, although it is no longer free for new customers.

The Epic Games Launcher is the downloadable desktop app that connects to your account and store library. It is used to install and update PC games, manage the library, and launch supported titles. Epic describes it as an app for purchasing, downloading and playing games in its launcher documentation.
In practical terms: use the store to find or claim a game; use the launcher to manage and run many of the PC games in your Epic library.
What can you do with the Epic Games Launcher?
- Sign in to an Epic account and browse the store.
- Buy games or add promotional free games to your account library.
- Install, update and launch supported games.
- Use account and friends features.
- Use cloud saves for games that support them.
It has a similar broad role to Steam, Ubisoft Connect or the EA app: it is a storefront client and game manager, not the game itself. Some Epic games also require a separate publisher account or launcher, so having the Epic client does not necessarily remove the need for another app.
Is the Epic Games Launcher free?
Yes. The launcher is free to download, and creating an Epic account does not require buying a game. The catalog includes free-to-play games, paid games, and titles offered free for a limited promotional period. Some games also sell optional in-game purchases or downloadable content. Epic advertises recurring free-game promotions on its download page, but the titles and offer terms change; do not assume every Epic game is free.
Do you need the launcher to play an Epic game?
For a game obtained through the Epic Games Store, expect to use the launcher as the normal way to install and manage it. Whether it must stay open after installation depends on the individual game’s DRM, online services and any additional publisher launcher it requires. Do not assume that an Epic purchase can run independently or that the game is DRM-free.

Epic-developed games may use Epic accounts and online services across platforms, while their specific installation and launch requirements vary by title and device. A shortcut added to Steam or a library-management app does not transfer ownership from Epic or guarantee that Epic’s account and launch requirements disappear.
If you already own a game, confirm which account and store sold it. Console purchases and purchases from other PC stores do not automatically become Epic Store entitlements.
How to download the launcher and install a game
- Open Epic’s official download page and choose the Windows or Mac installer offered for your device.
- Run the downloaded installer, then open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Sign in to the Epic account that owns the game, or create an account. If you play on a console, check whether your console identity is already linked to an Epic account before creating another one.
- Open Library, select the game, choose an installation folder and select Install.
- When installation finishes, select the game in the launcher to start it.
Epic’s game installation instructions cover the library installation flow. Get the installer from Epic’s own site rather than an unofficial download mirror. Enable two-factor authentication for account security.
Does the launcher work offline?
Epic supports offline play for some single-player games that are already installed; offline play is not guaranteed for every title. Multiplayer and other online services will not work without a connection, and cloud saves or achievements may be unavailable. A game that depends on online authentication may not start offline at all.
Epic’s support pages describe offline behavior both as an automatic mode when the launcher starts without internet and as a setting called Enable Offline Mode Browsing. Because the guidance differs between pages, consult the current offline-mode instructions for the installed launcher version. Offline mode is not a substitute for checking a specific game’s requirements.

Does Epic support cloud saves?
Cloud saves are available for many Epic Store games, not all of them. To check a title, open Library, select Filters and choose Cloud Saves under Features. Epic says support can also be identified through a game’s store-page feature tags. To turn the feature on, open the launcher profile icon, choose Settings and select Enable Cloud Saves. If a cloud-save conflict appears after playing on more than one device or playing offline, compare the save timestamps and identify the newer progress before choosing. Selecting an older save can overwrite newer progress; Epic warns that this may permanently lose it. Its cloud-save conflict guidance explains the choice.

Epic’s dedicated support page lists these minimum desktop launcher requirements. Requirements can change, so check the linked page and the installer before downloading.

There is a discrepancy in Epic’s own Mac information: its dedicated support page lists macOS 13.5 or later, while its consumer download page displays macOS 10.13 or later. Treat the dedicated support requirement as the safer reference and verify the current installer’s compatibility before proceeding. The mobile store is not the same product experience as the traditional Windows or Mac desktop launcher.

Choose a client based on where your game is sold and what features you need. Third-party aggregators can organize or launch games, but they are not stores and do not transfer licenses. For example, Microsoft describes the Xbox app for PC as providing access to Xbox and Game Pass games, cloud gaming where supported, and a view that can include games installed from other PC storefronts; it does not turn an Epic purchase into an Xbox entitlement.

Common Epic launcher problems and what to check
A game you bought is missing from the library
- Check that you are signed into the Epic account used for the purchase; a console-linked identity and a separate Epic account can be confused.
- Check the account’s Transactions page and confirm whether the purchase was made through Epic, a console store or another retailer.
- Check library filters, then sign out and back into the intended account.
- If the Epic transaction is present but the entitlement is still missing, contact Epic Support.
Epic’s account FAQ notes that platform-linked and separate Epic accounts can cause confusion.
A game opens another publisher’s launcher
Epic may handle the purchase and installation while a publisher client handles authentication or additional services. You may need both applications and accounts. Refund eligibility generally depends on the product and purchase channel, not simply on which launcher opens the game.
The installer or launcher is stuck
Check the operating-system requirements and available storage, restart the computer, and run the official installer again. Review security software or permissions if installation remains blocked, and use Epic’s launcher troubleshooting guidance. Avoid unofficial installers and mirrors.
Progress seems to have disappeared
First make sure you are signed into the account that owns the game. Then check whether that game supports cloud saves and whether the feature is enabled. Save data may instead be local or associated with a separate publisher account. Account ownership, cloud saves and cross-platform progression are different things; support for one does not establish support for the others.

You want to uninstall the launcher
Check the individual game’s requirements before removing it. Uninstalling Epic may interfere with updates, verification, authentication, cloud syncing or normal launching; whether a game can run independently depends on its own DRM and services.
How Epic Store refunds work
For a game marked refundable or self-refundable, Epic’s general guidance says a request may qualify if it has been less than 14 days since purchase and the player has logged less than two hours of playtime. An unreleased pre-order may also qualify. These conditions are not a guarantee: product type, region and purchase channel matter, and virtual currency, consumables, many in-app purchases and other products may be excluded. Regional consumer laws may provide additional rights. Check Epic’s current refund eligibility and request guidance and its refund exclusions.
- Open your Epic account’s Transactions.
- Find the game and select Request refund if that option is available.
- Choose a reason and confirm the request.
A purchase made through a console or third-party platform must generally be handled through that seller’s refund process.
The Bottom Line
If someone asks whether “Epic Games” is a launcher, the precise answer is no: Epic Games is the company, the Epic Games Store is its marketplace, and the Epic Games Launcher is the app used to manage and launch many of its desktop games.
