Steam does not provide a reliable, supported switch that lets a game remain open while excluding its playtime. You can hide the hours from other people, prevent avoidable idle time by fully closing the game, or use Offline Mode in limited circumstances. However, Offline Mode is not a guaranteed way to prevent all playtime records—and Valve says offline playtime still counts toward refund eligibility.
First, decide what “not count hours” means
Steam users usually mean one of four different things:
- Stop the library counter increasing: Steam has no documented per-game setting that disables playtime tracking while the game is running.
- Hide hours from friends: Steam’s privacy controls can hide your game details, total playtime, or a specific game.
- Avoid idle time: Fully exit the game and any related launcher instead of leaving it paused, minimized, suspended, or running in the background.
- Test a game without affecting a refund: Do not assume that Offline Mode protects the two-hour refund limit. Valve explicitly includes online, offline, and shared-library playtime in its refund calculation.
If you only want to hide your hours
Privacy is the safest solution when your real concern is what other people can see. Steam’s game-details privacy controls cover information such as owned games, achievements, and playtime. Steam also provides a separate option for keeping total playtime private.
Hide total playtime from your profile
- Open Steam and go to your profile.
- Select Edit Profile.
- Open Privacy Settings.
- Adjust Game details to the visibility level you want.
- Enable the option equivalent to Always keep my total playtime private even if users can see my game details.
Steam’s labels can change between client versions, so look for the controls named Game details and total playtime. Steam’s profile-help documentation explains that these settings control which parts of your Community Profile other users can see.

This changes visibility, not necessarily Steam’s internal records. Hiding playtime should not be treated as deleting or stopping the counter.
Hide one particular game
To hide a single title, use Steam’s per-game privacy control:
- Open Library.
- Open the game’s library page.
- Open the game’s Settings menu. Depending on the client layout, this may appear as a gear or three-dot menu.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Mark as Private.
Valve says that a private game’s ownership, in-game status, playtime, and activity are hidden from other people. The per-game privacy announcement does not say that marking a game private disables future tracking, so treat it as a visibility feature rather than a playtime switch.
If you want to stop idle time from accumulating
Steam does not document playtime as an activity or input counter. Pausing a game, minimizing it, or leaving it suspended is therefore not a reliable way to tell Steam that you have stopped playing.

Use this clean-exit routine:
- Save your progress.
- Quit through the game’s own menu when possible.
- Wait for the Steam library page to return to the Play button.
- Close any associated launcher, such as EA app, Ubisoft Connect, or Rockstar Games Launcher.
- Check your operating system’s process list if Steam still appears to show the game as running.
- Restart Steam if the client remains stuck in a running state.
Closing the game window does not always settle matters immediately when a secondary launcher or related process remains active. On Steam Deck, choose Exit Game rather than relying on suspend when accurate playtime matters. Suspend behavior can vary by game, client, and resume state, and community reports have described suspended time appearing as game time; that report is anecdotal, not a universal Valve guarantee.
Does Steam Offline Mode stop hours from being counted?
Not reliably enough to treat it as a permanent playtime loophole. Offline Mode removes Steam’s active network connection and may prevent immediate synchronization in some situations, but Valve does not promise that every offline session will remain absent from all playtime systems.
To prepare Offline Mode, Steam’s official instructions require you to:
- Start Steam while connected to the internet.
- Make sure Remember me is enabled at login.
- Update the game completely.
- Launch the game once online so any setup requirements can finish.
- Close the game.
- Open Steam > Settings > Security and ensure Don’t save account credentials on this computer is not selected.
- Choose Steam > Go Offline from the main Steam window.
Offline Mode has important costs and limitations:
- Steam features requiring a network connection are unavailable.
- Always-online games will not work.
- Games that depend on external launchers may fail to start.
- Updates will not arrive until Steam reconnects.
- Stored login information is required.
- You should close Steam normally instead of force-quitting it so Offline Mode information is preserved.
Most importantly, Valve’s refund policy states that the usual refund requirements are a request within 14 days of purchase and less than two hours of playtime, and that the calculation includes online, offline, and shared-library playtime. A hidden profile number is not the same thing as playtime being ignored by Steam’s refund system.

Can a launch option disable Steam playtime?
No documented, supported Steam launch option disables playtime tracking. Steam’s launch-options documentation describes options for changing startup behavior and enabling game features, not for excluding a session from the playtime counter.
Do not rely on claims that a particular command, minimized window, or pause state permanently freezes hours. Steam does not publish a general “do not count this session” command.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you reset or delete hours already recorded?
Steam provides privacy controls to hide existing hours, but it does not provide a documented self-service method for resetting a game’s playtime to zero. Marking a title private also does not establish that its underlying playtime has been erased.
Refunds do not solve this problem either. Valve says an approved refund does not remove existing playtime or achievements from a Steam Community Profile. Do not assume Steam Support will manually alter the counter; no normal, documented reset process should be promised.

What about non-Steam games?
Manually added non-Steam shortcuts can behave differently depending on the Steam client version, platform, and type of entry. Community reports have described changing or experimental playtime behavior for some non-Steam games, but the reports are inconsistent and do not establish that every shortcut is tracked—or that none are.
If the title is a non-Steam shortcut, check the specific entry after closing it rather than assuming it follows the same rules as a purchased Steam app.
Should you use a playtime spoofer or idling tool?
No. Third-party tools that simulate gameplay or falsify hours are not a normal privacy solution. Valve’s Subscriber Agreement prohibits faking gameplay statistics, including playtime, and prohibits unauthorized software, scripts, bots, and automation interacting with Steam.
Such tools can also create account-security and game-specific risks. If your goal is simply to hide hours, use Steam’s privacy controls instead.
Which option is right for you?
| Goal | Best approach | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Keep friends from seeing hours | Hide total playtime or mark the game private | Steam may still retain the playtime internally |
| Stop idle accumulation | Exit the game and related launchers completely | You cannot leave the session open for convenience |
| Play without a live Steam connection | Prepare and use Offline Mode | Online features, updates, and some games may not work |
| Protect refund eligibility | Keep total playtime below the applicable threshold | Offline Mode is not a guaranteed way to avoid refund playtime |
| Erase existing hours | Use privacy controls to hide them | No documented self-service reset is available |
| Freeze or falsify the statistic | Do not use spoofers or unauthorized automation | It may violate Steam’s rules and put the account at risk |
Bottom line
Steam cannot reliably separate active play from time when a game is open. If you want privacy, hide your total playtime or mark the individual game private. If you want to prevent idle hours, fully quit the game and its launchers. Offline Mode can be useful for compatible games, but it is not a guaranteed way to exclude playtime and does not protect the Steam refund timer.
