Mojang’s Bedrock 1.16.0 release notes list villagers among the mobs that do not follow the described natural-despawn rules. That does not protect a villager from dying, changing, wandering away, or a possible world or entity issue.
Do Bedrock villagers despawn if you leave?
Under the rules described in Mojang’s Bedrock 1.16.0 release notes, villagers are exempt from the natural-despawn behavior described for most naturally spawning mobs. Leaving the area or moving beyond the usual despawn distance should not, by itself, make a Bedrock villager naturally despawn under those rules.
The distance figures in the notes are easy to misapply: at simulation distance 4, almost all naturally spawning mobs despawn at 44 blocks or farther; at higher simulation distances, the notes describe despawning at a simulation-distance edge up to 128 blocks from the nearest player. Those thresholds are for the general mob rules, not villagers. The notes also describe a 32-to-44-block random-check band involving 30 seconds of inactivity and a 1-in-800 chance; those details likewise do not establish a villager despawn threshold.
Do you need to name-tag a villager?
No—not for natural-despawn protection under the Bedrock rules in those notes. Mojang says mobs set to persist, including name-tagged mobs, will never naturally despawn, then separately lists villagers as mobs that do not follow the stated despawn rules. A name tag is therefore optional for a Bedrock villager; use one if you want to label it, not because the cited rules require it to keep the villager from naturally despawning.

What to check if a villager is missing
A missing villager is not proof of natural despawning. Check plausible alternatives before concluding what happened:

- Escape or movement: Check nearby areas and possible routes out of its enclosure.
- World or entity issue: A bug is possible, but a public Mojang bug-tracker report about villagers and other entities disappearing after leaving a chunk or saving and exiting documents a report, not a confirmed general cause, frequency, or current fix status. See the bug-tracker report.
Beds, workstations, trading, enclosing a room, or keeping a chunk loaded are not established by the cited release notes as requirements for preventing a Bedrock villager’s natural despawn. They may matter for other gameplay purposes, but they are not necessary advice for this specific concern based on these sources.

The Bedrock release notes do not verify Java Edition mechanics. If you play Java, do not rely on the Bedrock exception as proof of the rules for your edition and version; consult a Java-specific source for that version. The available evidence here does not establish whether Java villagers follow the same natural-despawn rules.
