On Windows 10 and Windows 11, the quickest built-in calibration route is to open the classic Game Controllers panel with joy.cpl. Select the device, choose Properties > Settings, reset an incorrect saved calibration if necessary, select Calibrate… when the device provides it, complete the wizard, and verify the result on the Test tab. The control is not available for every gamepad, wheel, HOTAS, or Bluetooth device, and calibration cannot repair worn sensors.
The quickest way to calibrate a joystick in Windows
Close the game and any controller-mapping software before starting. Connect one controller directly to the PC if possible, then follow these steps:
- Connect the device. A wired connection is preferable during calibration. If it is Bluetooth, make sure pairing, battery level, and the connection are stable.
- Open Game Controllers. Press Win + R, type
joy.cpl, and press Enter. This opens the classic Windows controller panel. - Select the correct device. Highlight the joystick, gamepad, wheel, throttle, or pedal set. Disconnect other controllers temporarily if the list is confusing.
- Open its properties. Choose Properties. On the Test tab, move the controls briefly to confirm that you selected the intended device.
- Reset a bad saved calibration. On Settings, choose Reset to Default if that control is available. This resets stored software calibration; it does not repair hardware.
- Run calibration. Select Calibrate…, if shown, and follow every prompt. Leave controls untouched when Windows asks for a center position, move each requested axis through its full travel, and center it again when instructed.
- Verify the result. Return to Properties > Test and check the center, both extremes, buttons, triggers, hats, throttles, and pedals.
The exact wizard differs by device. A simple gamepad may show only stick axes, while a HOTAS, racing wheel, or pedal set can expose several additional axes.
Microsoft documents the joy.cpl route and notes that the calibration controls depend on the device and driver: Microsoft Game Controllers guidance.

Prepare the controller before calibration
- Use a direct USB port rather than an unpowered hub.
- Keep the device on a stable surface.
- Close the game, Steam Input, manufacturer utilities, and other remappers unless one of them is the tool you intend to use.
- Leave sticks, triggers, throttles, pedals, and hat switches untouched until the wizard requests movement.
- Physically release and center the controls before the center-detection step.
- Disconnect extra controllers so you cannot calibrate the wrong entry.
If a Bluetooth controller repeatedly disconnects, disappears, or reports incomplete input, fix that connection first. Check pairing, charge level, cable or port options, firmware, and Windows updates using Microsoft’s controller connection guidance.
How to tell whether calibration worked
On the Test tab, release the stick and watch the indicator. It should remain centered rather than wandering. Move each axis slowly from minimum to maximum: the indicator should travel smoothly and reach both ends. Press every button, move the hat switch in each direction, and check triggers, throttles, wheels, and pedals for complete travel.

What calibration can—and cannot—fix
Problems calibration may correct
- A stick or axis rests off center even when untouched.
- Windows detects movement at rest.
- An axis reaches full input too early or too late.
- The reported range is incomplete after changing a port, adapter, or driver.
- A throttle, rudder, pedal, or joystick axis has a software offset.
Problems it usually cannot repair
- Physical drift from a worn potentiometer or sensor.
- Jumping, noisy, or intermittent movement from damaged hardware.
- A broken button, cable, wireless link, or USB port.
- A game’s sensitivity or dead-zone settings.
- An incompatible XInput, DirectInput, or HID mode.
- Conflicts caused by multiple remapping layers.
XInput describes dead zones as software handling for small values reported around the stick’s center. That is separate from the device calibration process: Microsoft’s XInput overview.

If the Calibrate button is missing
A missing Settings tab or Calibrate… button does not automatically mean Windows is broken. Some devices expose only testing information; others use an XInput interface, a manufacturer driver, a virtual controller, or a connection mode that does not publish the classic calibration controls.
- Confirm that the device appears in
joy.cpl. - Use Properties > Test to see whether inputs respond.
- Choose Reset to Default if it is offered.
- Try USB instead of Bluetooth, if the device supports both.
- Open the manufacturer’s official configuration utility and follow its calibration or center-setting procedure.
- Install the vendor’s current firmware and driver.
- Test in the software where you actually use the device.
- Avoid random registry edits and unofficial driver packages.
Microsoft’s guidance includes reports of devices with no calibration control, so do not assume every Windows 10 or Windows 11 controller has the same tabs: device-specific Game Controllers guidance.

Windows, Steam, and in-game dead zones are different
| Symptom | Most likely place to address it |
|---|---|
| Windows’ Test page shows an offset center | Reset or calibrate in Windows, use the vendor utility, or investigate hardware |
| Windows is centered but the character moves by itself | Adjust the game’s dead zone or Steam Input profile |
| An axis reaches full input too soon | Calibration, device software, or the game’s range/sensitivity setting |
| It works in Windows but not one game | Controller API compatibility, XInput/DirectInput mode, Steam Input, or the game’s support |
| The device disconnects or vanishes | USB/Bluetooth power, cable, battery, firmware, or driver troubleshooting |
| Drift changes between tests | Possible mechanical or sensor wear |
Steam Input
For a Steam game, open Steam > Settings > Controller, select the detected controller or its test area, and choose the available calibration or dead-zone control. Steam’s labels can vary by client version. Its calibration and dead-zone settings are a software layer, not a replacement for Windows device calibration. See Steam’s controller calibration help and its documented hardware joystick calibration controls at Steam News.
Steam Input can translate a DirectInput or HID controller for a game that expects XInput, provide per-game mappings, and add dead-zone controls. Running it alongside a vendor utility and another remapper can instead create duplicate virtual devices or conflicting input.

Device-specific considerations
Xbox controllers
Use Xbox Accessories for supported firmware, profiles, and controller customization. Whether the classic Windows calibration page appears still depends on the model, driver, and connection mode. Xbox Accessories is not a universal cure for physical stick drift; persistent drift may require a game dead-zone adjustment, repair, or replacement.
PlayStation and third-party gamepads
Windows may test these controllers successfully while a game expects XInput rather than DirectInput or HID input. Steam Input, or a documented compatibility utility such as DS4Windows where appropriate, can provide translation and remapping. Disable overlapping tools when diagnosing duplicate or missing inputs. Microsoft discusses these compatibility considerations in its Windows controller connection guide.
HOTAS, wheels, and pedals
These devices often expose many axes and advanced functions such as force feedback, clutch controls, profiles, or separate throttle units. Prefer the manufacturer’s utility when Windows lacks calibration controls or when the vendor documents a specific center-setting sequence. Calibrate each physical device separately.
Recover from a bad calibration
If the controller behaves worse after the wizard, reopen joy.cpl, select the device, choose Properties > Settings > Reset to Default when available, and test again. A common cause is moving the stick during center detection, holding an axis away from center, selecting the wrong device, or calibrating a virtual controller exposed by a remapper. If reset does not restore normal behavior, remove the extra remapping layers and use the manufacturer’s documented reset procedure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen calibration is unlikely to help
Stop repeating the wizard when the axis jumps, cannot reach both extremes, changes its center substantially between tests, or remains off center after reset and calibration. If the same fault appears in Windows, Steam, and several games, the likely causes are a worn sensor, damaged mechanism, cable, or other hardware fault. At that point, repair or replacement is more appropriate than further calibration.
Quick Recap
Practical troubleshooting order
