Trade Kadabra to another Pokémon Sapphire-compatible game. It evolves into Alakazam during the trade; no held item is required. If you want to use it in your Sapphire game afterward, ask the other player to trade it back.
How to evolve Kadabra into Alakazam
- Have Kadabra in your party or storage and access to the game’s trade function.
- Trade Kadabra to another compatible game. Its evolution into Alakazam happens as part of the trade.
- If you want Alakazam back in your game, ask the recipient to trade it back after it evolves.
The Ruby/Sapphire Pokédex lists Alakazam as obtainable in Sapphire by evolving Kadabra. The evolution references list the method as a trade, with no held item requirement. Pokémon Database’s trade-evolution list identifies Kadabra’s evolution as a trade, and Bulbapedia’s trade evolution reference describes the mechanic.
What you need to trade in Pokémon Sapphire
Using original Game Boy Advance hardware
The Ruby/Sapphire connectivity reference describes trading between two Game Boy Advance systems using a Game Boy Advance Game Link cable. Check that the cable and your particular hardware and game setup are compatible before buying an accessory. The Ruby/Sapphire connectivity description identifies this cable-based setup.
Using other setups
The cited material does not establish a specific adapter, emulator feature, or current accessory listing. Confirm that the two games and systems you plan to use support trading with each other; the essential requirement is a compatible game on the other side of the trade.

Does Kadabra need to hold an item?
No. Kadabra evolves into Alakazam by being traded, without a held item. Some other Pokémon trade evolutions require an item, but that requirement does not apply to Kadabra.

The cited references list trading as Kadabra’s evolution method and do not establish an alternative way to evolve it within Pokémon Sapphire. A Linking Cord is not the Sapphire method: the cited item reference identifies Linking Cord as a Generation VIII item, not an item used for this Generation III game. PokeDB’s Linking Cord entry gives its generation.
