Close the game and Launcher, back up anything you want to keep, then remove the relevant Minecraft data folder. Deleting files is separate from uninstalling the game or Launcher.
Before deleting Minecraft files
Deleting a folder can permanently remove its contents. Minecraft Support warns, “Minecraft support cannot recover any deleted files.” Back up wanted worlds and other files to a location outside the Minecraft folders before continuing. For Bedrock, Microsoft Learn recommends saving a copy of the relevant com.mojang folder before installing a new build.

- Close Minecraft and the Minecraft Launcher.
- Decide whether you want to delete one world or file type, or all local data for an edition.
- Keep the game’s data folder separate from Windows’ app-uninstall process; removing one does not mean you have completed the other.
Delete Java Edition data
Java Edition’s Windows data folder is %AppData%.minecraft. It can contain worlds, screenshots, mods, resource packs, and configuration. Minecraft Support’s manual uninstall instructions direct users to the Roaming AppData folder to remove these files.
- Press Windows+R.
- Enter
%AppData%and press Enter. File Explorer opens the Roaming AppData folder. - For a full removal of Java Edition’s local files, delete the
.minecraftfolder.
To delete only screenshots, open %AppData%.minecraftscreenshots and remove the images you choose instead. Minecraft Support documents this screenshot location in its screenshot guide.

Delete Bedrock Edition data on Windows
Bedrock’s Windows storage has changed as installations move from the older UWP format to GDK. Do not assume Java’s .minecraft folder contains Bedrock worlds. Microsoft Learn documents current GDK paths as well as the legacy UWP path; if you cannot find the data in one location, check the other and confirm the folder contains the files you mean to remove before deleting it.
Current GDK storage
Press Windows+R and inspect %appdata%Minecraft Bedrockusers. Microsoft Learn documents shared content at %appdata%Minecraft Bedrockuserssharedgamescom.mojang. Non-server worlds are documented under %appdata%Minecraft Bedrockusers<user id>gamescom.mojangminecraftWorlds. The user-specific folder matters: select the one associated with the account whose worlds you intend to remove.

- To remove one world, delete only that world’s folder inside
minecraftWorlds. - To remove broader local Bedrock content, delete the relevant
com.mojangdata only after making a backup; this can remove worlds and other local content.
These current locations are described in Microsoft Learn’s add-ons getting-started guide and its Bedrock Dedicated Server guide. The latter documents the user-specific location for non-server worlds; server data may be stored separately and is not covered by these local-world steps.
Legacy UWP storage
Older UWP installations use %LocalAppData%PackagesMicrosoft.MinecraftUWP_8wekyb3d8bbweLocalStategamescom.mojang. Microsoft Learn lists this legacy location alongside the newer GDK storage in its GDK migration guide. If the current path does not contain the expected files, check this legacy folder before concluding the data is missing.

Windows may hide AppData in normal folder browsing. Entering a documented path directly in Run or File Explorer avoids having to reveal hidden folders manually. Minecraft Bedrock 26.40 release notes describe cloud backup and sync support for Windows worlds, but do not assume a particular world has synced or can be restored after local deletion; verify the installed version and sync status first. Deleting local data is not the same as uninstalling Minecraft or its Launcher. Minecraft Support treats Windows program removal separately from manually deleting Java saves and other files. If you also want to remove an installed app, use Windows’ app-removal interface and select the relevant Minecraft app. To reinstall the Launcher, use the official Minecraft download page or Microsoft Store.
