If the console is somewhere else, change your Microsoft-account password, use Microsoft’s Sign out everywhere control, and change your Home Xbox if the person is using your game-sharing benefits.
There is one important catch: Microsoft says Sign out everywhere does not sign out Xbox consoles. It can take up to 24 hours and covers browsers, apps, and other Microsoft-account sessions, but not Xbox consoles.
Choose the fix that matches your situation
| Situation | Start here | Then consider |
|---|---|---|
| The Xbox is in front of you | Remove your account from the console | Change your password if the other person knows it |
| The Xbox is elsewhere | Change your Microsoft-account password | Use Sign out everywhere and change Home Xbox if game sharing is involved |
| You suspect hacking | Change the password immediately | Review Recent activity, security information, and two-step verification |
| You want to stop game sharing | Change Home Xbox | Change the password if the other person has it |
| A child or family member uses their own account | Remove them from the Microsoft family group | Adjust Family Safety limits if removal is not necessary |
| You sold, gave away, or lost the Xbox | Change the password and Home Xbox | Reset the console if possible and remove it from your device list |
If you have the Xbox, remove your account from it
Removing a profile is the quickest solution when you can physically use the Xbox. On current Xbox consoles, the menu path is generally:
- Press the Xbox button.
- Open Profile & system.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Account.
- Select Remove accounts.
- Choose the unwanted account and confirm Remove.
Menu wording can vary slightly between Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and software updates. Microsoft’s Xbox sign-out instructions are the relevant reference if a label is different on your console.

This removes the saved profile from that Xbox. It does not delete the Microsoft account, remove owned games, or cancel subscriptions. If the other person knows your password, removing the profile alone is not enough: change the password as well.
If the Xbox is somewhere else, secure the account remotely
1. Change your Microsoft-account password
Go to the Microsoft account security dashboard, sign in, and choose the option to change your password. This is the essential step if someone else may know the old password.
- Create a new password that you do not use anywhere else.
- Do not give the new password to the person you are removing.
- Check your recovery email address and phone number.
- Look for unfamiliar aliases, security methods, or authenticator entries and remove anything you did not add.
A password change protects future authentication, but do not describe it as a guaranteed instant sign-out from every Xbox console. An old profile may still appear on a console even when it can no longer authenticate normally.
2. Use Sign out everywhere
After changing the password:
- Open your Microsoft account’s Advanced security options.
- Scroll to Sign out everywhere.
- Select Sign out.
According to Microsoft’s Sign out everywhere guidance, the process may take up to 24 hours. It signs the account out of browsers, apps, and other Microsoft-account sessions, but Xbox consoles are excluded.

Because of that exception, remove the profile directly from every Xbox you can access. For a console you cannot reach, the practical remote safeguards are changing the password and, when relevant, changing Home Xbox.
3. Check Recent activity and turn on stronger protection
If the access was not authorized, open Microsoft’s Recent activity page. It normally shows significant account activity from roughly the previous 30 days, including details such as device, operating system, browser or app, location, and IP information.
For an unfamiliar item in the unusual-activity section, choose This wasn’t me where available, then use Secure your account. An unfamiliar location is not conclusive proof of hacking: Microsoft notes that mobile-network routing and travel can make the displayed location differ from your actual location. Check the time, device, activity type, and other details together.
Enable two-step verification at account.microsoft.com/security: choose Manage how I sign in, then find Additional security and Two-step verification, and select Turn on. Microsoft recommends maintaining multiple recovery methods. Its current guidance also says SMS is being phased out for some personal-account authentication and recovery uses, so do not treat SMS as the preferred option in every case.

Change Home Xbox to stop game-sharing access
Home Xbox is a licensing setting, not a sign-out control. The users of the designated Home Xbox can receive access to device-based licenses associated with that console. This can include games and subscription benefits shared through the device.
To move the designation to your own console, the likely current path is:
- Open Settings.
- Choose General.
- Open Personalization.
- Select My home Xbox.
- Choose Make this my home Xbox.
Microsoft’s digital-goods guidance says you can change Home Xbox up to five times in a rolling one-year period—not five times per calendar year. Changing it moves the device licenses to the new Home Xbox. It may also cause users of the former Home Xbox to lose access they were receiving through device-based sharing.
Changing Home Xbox does not necessarily remove your saved profile from the other console or end every active session. Use it when the problem includes game sharing or license access, not as the first step for an ordinary local sign-out. Your own user-based licenses remain available when you sign in to your account.

Remove a child or family member
If the other person uses their own Microsoft account, do not remove your account. Remove them from the Microsoft family group instead. This requires an organizer account. If parental consent was granted, the adult who provided that consent may also need to remove the consent first.
Microsoft documents this Xbox One path:
- Open Profile & system.
- Go to Settings.
- Choose Account.
- Open Family settings.
- Select Manage family members.
- Choose the account.
- Select Remove [member name] from family and confirm.
See Microsoft’s family-group removal instructions if the labels differ. Removing someone from a family group is different from removing a saved profile from a console. Family Safety controls can restrict apps, games, and screen time without removing the person from the group.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the Xbox was sold, given away, lost, or stolen
Take these steps as soon as possible:
- Change your Microsoft-account password.
- Use Sign out everywhere, remembering that it excludes Xbox consoles.
- Change Home Xbox if the old console was designated as yours.
- If you still have the console, reset it to factory defaults before handing it over.
- Remove the console from your Microsoft account’s device list.
To remove a listed device, go to account.microsoft.com/devices, sign in, find the Xbox, select Show details, choose More actions > Remove, confirm that it is ready to be removed, and select Remove.
Device-list removal is account housekeeping. Microsoft distinguishes it from unlinking a device for Microsoft Store device-limit purposes, and it should not be treated as a guaranteed immediate remote sign-out or wipe of an Xbox console. Microsoft’s sell, gift, or recycle guidance covers the reset process and related precautions.

Prevent unauthorized purchases
If the account was shared or left on another console, require a passkey or password for purchases instead of relying only on profile removal.
Microsoft documents this Xbox One path:
- Press the Xbox button.
- Open System > Settings > Account > Sign-in, security & passkey.
- Choose Change my sign-in & security preferences.
- Select Customize.
- Choose Ask for my passkey to make purchases.
- Select Passkey required.
The cited instructions are specifically for Xbox One, so the equivalent setting may be labeled differently on Xbox Series X|S. For an unrecognized charge, review your Microsoft order history and use Microsoft’s unauthorized-purchase guidance.
Why someone may still appear after you remove them
- The profile is saved, not necessarily active. A name or avatar can remain visible even when the account cannot authenticate normally.
- Sign out everywhere has an Xbox exception. The global control does not eject Xbox consoles.
- Home Xbox is separate. A person may still have access to device-based licenses even though your profile is not being actively used.
- They may be using another account. Removing your profile does not remove separate Microsoft accounts on the same console.
- Sharing was intentional. A password or Home Xbox change can revoke access the other person previously relied on; that is the expected result.
Quick troubleshooting checklist
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| The person is using your profile on an Xbox you can access | Remove the account under Settings > Account > Remove accounts. |
| You cannot access the other Xbox | Change the password, use Sign out everywhere, and change Home Xbox if needed. |
| The person can still play your games | Check whether that console is still Home Xbox; remember that saved profiles and separate licenses are different issues. |
| You have reached the Home Xbox limit | Stop toggling between consoles. The limit is five changes in a rolling one-year period. |
| You see a strange sign-in location | Compare the device, time, activity, and IP details; location alone may be misleading. |
| You cannot recover the account | Use Microsoft’s account sign-in helper and official support. Avoid third-party recovery services. |
Microsoft says support agents cannot send password-reset links or directly change account details for you. If unauthorized access or purchases are involved, prioritize account recovery, password replacement, security-information checks, and two-step verification.
