How Do You Make Modded Minecraft Less Laggy?

Diagnose modded Minecraft lag by separating low FPS from slow world simulation, then apply targeted checks for shaders, Spark profiles, mod compatibility, and memory.

To make modded Minecraft less laggy, first work out whether the problem is low client FPS, slow world simulation, or both. Turn off shaders briefly to test graphics load, use Spark to profile the affected side, and check mod compatibility or memory allocation only when the symptoms point there. There is no one setting that fixes every modpack.

How do you tell what kind of lag you have?

Watch for the difference between what you see and what the world is doing. NeoForged Documentation recommends identifying whether the issue is on the client or server:

  • Low FPS or a choppy camera: the client is struggling to render the game.
  • Decent FPS but delayed mobs, dropped items, or slow machines: world or server simulation may be struggling.
  • Both at once: client rendering and world simulation can both be bottlenecks, so investigate each separately.

A network connection problem is not the same as low rendering FPS. These symptoms alone do not establish a universal network diagnosis.

What should you try first for low FPS?

Test the game without shaders

Temporarily disable shaders and compare performance in the same scene with the same other settings. NeoForged notes that shaders may demand more from the graphics card than it can handle. If FPS improves, shader load is involved, though it may not be the only cause.

Profile the client with Spark

If the game is still slow, a client profile can help locate costly code paths. NeoForged recommends collecting data for a couple of minutes:

  1. Run /sparkc profiler to start client profiling.
  2. Play in the scene where the lag occurs for a couple of minutes.
  3. Run /sparkc profiler --stop to stop profiling and generate the profile.

A profile can show where time is being spent, but interpreting it may take experience. If you need help, NeoForged suggests asking in its support community and sharing the profile link. Review any logs or profile details for private information before posting.

What should you check when FPS is fine but the world feels slow?

Look for heavy entity and block-entity activity

NeoForged lists large numbers of mobs or dropped items, and nearby block entities such as chests or machines, as possible contributors to server lag. Check whether the slowdown is concentrated around a crowded farm, item-heavy area, or machine setup. These are leads to investigate, not guaranteed fixes: removing entities or machines will not resolve every server bottleneck.

Profile the server or integrated world

Use the server-side Spark commands for world simulation profiling. Collect data while the slowdown is happening, for a couple of minutes:

  1. Run /spark profiler to start server profiling.
  2. Reproduce the slow-world behavior for a couple of minutes.
  3. Run /spark profiler --stop to stop profiling and generate the profile.

In single-player, the integrated server handles world simulation even though the world is hosted on your computer. When both rendering and simulation appear affected, profile the client and server separately where possible.

What if the lag started after changing mods?

Check that every mod matches the profile’s Minecraft version and modloader. CurseForge’s guidance on custom profiles explains that mods need to be compatible with those profile details. A mismatch can prevent a valid installation and may be associated with new problems after changes.

If the game crashes as well as lagging, a crash report can provide context such as the Java version, memory allocation, and mod list. Fabric Documentation describes those details in its crash report guidance; a crash report can help investigate crashes or mod conflicts, but it is not itself a direct lag fix.

Should you allocate more memory to a modpack?

Not automatically. Minecraft’s allocated memory is only the portion reserved for the game; it is not the same as the computer’s total installed RAM. CurseForge Support says its app defaults modpacks to 4 GB (4096 MB) and recommends not lowering the allocation below 4 GB. That is an app default and support recommendation, not a universal minimum or a performance study for every pack. CurseForge also warns that allocating too much can negatively affect the wider system.

Which fix should you try for your symptoms?

What you notice First useful check Next step
Low FPS or choppy camera Disable shaders temporarily and compare in the same scene. Capture a client Spark profile with /sparkc profiler and /sparkc profiler --stop.
Good FPS, but delayed mobs, items, or machines Inspect nearby mobs, dropped items, chests, and machines as possible sources of load. Capture a server Spark profile with /spark profiler and /spark profiler --stop.
Both rendering and simulation feel slow Separate the client and world symptoms rather than assuming a single cause. Profile each side where possible.
Lag or other problems began after adding or updating a mod Verify each mod against the profile’s Minecraft version and modloader. Use crash-report details if crashes or mod conflicts are also occurring.
Memory pressure seems plausible Check the allocation and the pack maker’s recommendation. Avoid both under-allocation and assigning so much that the wider system is affected.
