In current Desktop, Console, and Mobile versions of Terraria, defeat Plantera, then find a Solar Eclipse: Mothron can spawn during that event. You can wait for an eclipse to occur naturally or summon one with a Solar Tablet. The eclipse’s own progression requirement is earlier than Mothron’s, so triggering the event before defeating Plantera will not make Mothron eligible to appear.
What you need to do
- Defeat Plantera. In the current listed Desktop, Console, and Mobile versions, Mothron is a post-Plantera enemy. The rule changed in Desktop version 1.4.1; earlier Desktop versions placed its spawn gate after all three mechanical bosses. Official Terraria Wiki: Mothron
- Start or wait for a Solar Eclipse. Solar Eclipses can occur naturally at dawn in Hardmode once at least one mechanical boss has been defeated, or you can summon one with a Solar Tablet. Official Terraria Wiki: Solar Eclipse
- Stay active during the event. Mothron is a rare Solar Eclipse enemy, so it may take time to appear. Continue fighting through the event and watch for it.
Why the boss and event requirements differ
A Solar Eclipse can become possible after defeating one mechanical boss, but Mothron’s current spawn condition is stricter: Plantera must also be defeated. Therefore, an eclipse can happen before Mothron is eligible to spawn.

For a natural eclipse, the wiki lists a 1-in-20 (5%) chance at a particular dawn once the event’s mechanical-boss requirement has been met. This is a per-dawn chance, not a guarantee that an eclipse will happen on the next morning. A Solar Tablet lets you summon the event rather than waiting for that chance.
Farming Mothron for a Broken Hero Sword
If you are hunting a Broken Hero Sword, defeating Mothron is not a guaranteed drop. The Official Terraria Wiki lists a 25% drop chance in Classic and 43.75% in Expert, and says the drop requires all three mechanical bosses to have been defeated. Those drop figures are based on Desktop 1.4.4.9 source code; the wiki page identified Desktop 1.4.5.8 as current when crawled. Official Terraria Wiki: Broken Hero Sword

The three-mechanical-boss requirement for the sword drop is separate from Mothron’s current post-Plantera spawn gate. If Mothron appears but the three bosses have not all been defeated, the Broken Hero Sword will not drop.

The current guidance above applies to Desktop, Console, and Mobile information on the cited wiki pages. Desktop 1.4.1 changed Mothron’s progression requirement from all three mechanical bosses to Plantera. Do not assume that same rule applies to every earlier console edition or the 3DS version; consult documentation for the specific platform and version you play.
