If you know the Pokémon’s six IVs, use a Generation III calculator. If you do not, test Hidden Power against Pokémon with known types and use the battle’s effectiveness messages to narrow down the answer.
Choose a method based on what you know
| Method | What you need | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| IV calculation | HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed IVs | The Hidden Power type; some calculators also estimate base power |
| Battle tests | Targets with known types and careful notes on effectiveness messages | A set of possible types, which you can narrow with additional tests |
For an IV-based answer, enter all six IVs into a calculator that supports Generation III, such as RotomLabs’ FireRed and LeafGreen IV Calculator. A calculator that does not support Generation III may use different mechanics.

How to identify the type without knowing the IVs
- Choose a target Pokémon whose type or types you know. Prefer a single-type target when possible, so its defensive matchups are easier to interpret.
- Use Hidden Power and note whether the game reports the move as super effective, not very effective, ineffective, or neither.
- Compare that result with the type matchups for possible Hidden Power types. If more than one type remains possible, test against another known target with a useful matchup.
Dual typing can combine effectiveness multipliers, so a message against a dual-type Pokémon may not identify one type on its own. An immunity can also make a test uninformative about other candidate types. Use multiple controlled tests rather than treating one result as definitive. Psypoke’s Hidden Power Calculator describes the battle-effectiveness approach.
Why IVs determine Hidden Power
Hidden Power is taught with TM10 in FireRed and LeafGreen, but the move’s type comes from the user Pokémon’s IVs. In Generation III, the type calculation uses the least significant bit of each IV. In the game’s calculation order—HP, Attack, Defense, Speed, Special Attack, Special Defense—the index is:

Normal and Fairy are not among the 16 possible Hidden Power types in Generation III.

In Generation III, Hidden Power’s base power is also determined by IVs and ranges from 30 to 70. Knowing the type does not tell you the exact power; use a Generation III calculator that reports power if you need both values. The range is listed in Pokémon Database’s Hidden Power reference.
Is there a FireRed NPC who checks the type?
The references for FireRed/LeafGreen identify TM10 as the way to teach Hidden Power, but do not identify an in-game NPC in those versions who tells you its type. A checker documented for a later Pokémon game is not a FireRed instruction. The Game8 FireRed/LeafGreen TM10 guide covers obtaining the move, not an NPC type check.
