The reliable way to tell is to match the card’s name and collector number to its official record or set checklist, then check the rarity listed for that specific expansion. Artwork that covers most of the card can be a visual clue, but it is not a dependable definition across every Pokémon TCG era.
How to check whether a Pokémon card is full art
- Identify the card. Note its name, collector number, and expansion symbol. Pokémon Support says the rarity symbol is in the lower-right corner and the expansion can be identified by the icon in the bottom-right area. See Pokémon’s guide to using the Trading Card Game database.
- Search the official card database. Search by card name or keyword; you can also narrow results using filters such as expansion and rarity. The database lists rarity categories as searchable options: Pokémon TCG Card Database.
- Match the exact card. Compare the result’s name, collector number, set, and image with your card. Read the rarity designation on that record rather than inferring a category from how much of the card is covered by artwork.
- Use the checklist for the right set and language when needed. If the card is older, or the database result does not settle the question, consult the checklist for its specific expansion. Rarity names and symbols have changed across releases.
Is “full art” the same as Illustration Rare?
Not as a universal rule. “Full art” is often used as a visual description, while official rarity labels depend on the set and era. In the Scarlet & Violet—Paldea Evolved checklist, Illustration Rare and Special Illustration Rare are listed as distinct rarity classes: official Paldea Evolved card list.
Official card records show why it helps to check the exact card: Arven 249/198 is identified as Special Illustration Rare, while Swablu GG27 from Crown Zenith’s Galarian Gallery is identified as Illustration Rare. Those labels describe those cards in their respective releases; they do not establish a single equivalence between “full art” and either category for every set. See the official Swablu card record.
Does the artwork alone tell you?
It can suggest a card’s style, but it cannot reliably settle its classification across eras. A card with art extending across much of its face may be called full art informally, yet official checklists use set-specific rarity terms. When appearance and terminology are ambiguous, the card’s exact set record or checklist is the stronger reference.

Does a full-art or rarity label prove the card is genuine?
No. Classification and authenticity are separate questions: a rarity label or art style does not prove a card is genuine. For suspected counterfeits, Pokémon Support discusses checks such as holding the card up to bright light and consulting a specialist trading-card shop: Pokémon Support’s counterfeit-card guidance.
