How Does a College Football Player’s Absence Affect Roster Limits and Substitutions?

A player’s absence does not automatically free a roster spot, but teams can make ordinary in-game substitutions. The rules depend on division, timing, and specific replacement exceptions.

Short answer: An absent player does not automatically free a roster spot, and a team does not need to free one before making an ordinary in-game substitution. Roster limits govern who may be listed and take part in team activities; playing rules govern who can enter the game and how officials handle illegal substitutions. The NCAA Division I football limit of 105 applies to covered programs beginning in 2027–28—not universally to every college team or as a Saturday active-player count.

Does an injured player free up a roster spot?

Usually, not automatically. Under NCAA Division I Bylaw 17.2, a covered team must stay within its roster limit through the end of the academic year or playing season, whichever is later. After the roster-submission deadline, a student-athlete omitted from the submitted roster generally may not take part in countable, required, or voluntary athletically related activities.

There are specific post-deadline replacement exceptions, but routine unavailability is not one. A player being injured, sick, suspended, or otherwise unable to play does not by itself establish that the team may add someone else.

When a replacement may be allowed

Bylaw 17.2.5 identifies limited circumstances, including a medically documented season-ending injury or illness after roster submission but before the first contest used for championship selections. That exception is administered by member conferences; it is not a general permission to replace a player injured later in the season.

Other listed cases include a fall-sport athlete withdrawing from the institution between regular academic terms, exhausted eligibility at or between terms before the next championship-segment opportunity, permanent ineligibility caused by an NCAA violation, and professional draft entry while enrolled full time. Each has conditions. For example, leaving the team while remaining enrolled is not the same as withdrawing from the institution.

Football’s midyear replacement exception

For a football player replaced at midyear, the replaced athlete may continue practicing and competing during the second academic term through the end of the season, including postseason competition. The replacement generally cannot take part in team activities or receive competition-related travel expenses until that season ends. The bylaw allows certain individual activities after the replacement enrolls and attends class.

What does the 105-player limit cover?

The NCAA Division I Board of Directors’ adopted legislation table sets a football roster limit of 105 for covered institutions that are members of a defendant conference or opt into the House settlement framework. The limit takes effect beginning in academic year 2027–28. It should not be treated as one universal number for FBS, FCS, Division II, Division III, NAIA, or every conference and season. Check the governing body, division, conference, and applicable year for a particular team.

The 105 figure is a submitted-roster limit, not evidence of a universal game-day dress list or a rule that only 105 players may dress or play on a particular Saturday. The cited materials do not establish a separate, uniform active-player or dress limit for all college football.

Can a team substitute for an injured player during a game?

Yes. Teams can ordinarily substitute eligible players between plays under the playing rules. An injured player’s absence does not require a separate roster transaction before another eligible player can enter. The distinction is practical: the roster rules address a player’s status with the team, while playing rules regulate substitutions and the number of players participating on a down.

Too many players on the field

Only 11 players per team may participate on a down. An NCAA interpretation published October 16, 2024, addresses a particular defensive substitution foul after the two-minute timeout in either half. If 12 or more defenders participate in the down, the offended team may choose to have the game clock reset to the time at the snap; the clock then restarts on the next snap.

If the extra defender is trying to leave but remains on the field at the snap without influencing the play, the ordinary five-yard substitution penalty applies without that clock adjustment. This special interpretation concerns enforcement of a substitution foul; it does not change roster eligibility rules.

What determines whether a specific player can be replaced?

To assess an individual case, establish four things before drawing a conclusion:

  • Governing rules: Identify the NCAA division, conference, season, and whether the institution is covered by the cited Division I framework.
  • Timing: Determine when the roster was submitted, whether the first championship-selection contest has occurred, whether the case falls between academic terms, and whether the season has ended.
  • Reason and documentation: Check whether the absence meets a defined exception, including any medical documentation or conference administration requirement.
  • Type of action: Separate a post-deadline roster replacement from an ordinary substitution during a game.

The NCAA’s official football playing rules page lists the rule book and 2026 updates. For a live game or a particular team, consult the current rules edition and any applicable conference or competition modifications.
