How Does a Runner Score on a Dropped Third Strike?

A dropped third strike can keep play alive and let a runner score—but only if the batter is eligible to run and the third out does not cancel the run.

A runner can score on a dropped third strike, but the run is not automatic: the runner must touch home legally before the third out, and certain third outs erase the run. Whether the batter may run to first depends on first-base occupancy and the number of outs.

When may the batter run to first?

Under MLB’s ordinary dropped-third-strike rule, an uncaught third strike leaves the ball live. The batter becomes a runner only if first base is empty or there are two outs. If first is occupied with fewer than two outs, the batter is out on the uncaught third strike and does not run to first. These conditions appear in MLB Rules 5.05(a)(2) and 5.09(a)(3) in the 2019 Official Baseball Rules.

Situation May the batter run? What it means for a runner on third
First base is empty Yes The runner may try to score while the defense plays on the batter-runner or another runner.
First base is occupied, fewer than two outs No; the batter is out The batter does not become a runner under the ordinary uncaught-third-strike rule.
First base is occupied, two outs Yes The runner may try to score, but the defense can end the inning with a third out that cancels the run.

A dropped third strike does not itself award the batter first base or score a run. The batter and any baserunners must still complete the play.

When does the run count?

MLB Rule 5.08(a) says a run scores when a runner legally advances through the bases and touches home before three outs end the inning. The timing alone is not enough: if the third out is one of the rule’s specified exceptions, a runner who crossed home during the play does not score.

  • The batter-runner is out before reaching first: If this is the third out, no run scores.
  • A runner is forced out: If a force out is the third out, no run scores, even if another runner touched home first.
  • A preceding runner is called out for missing a base: If that is the third out, no run scores.

By contrast, if the third out is a tag out that is not a force, a run that scored before the out can count, provided the runner touched the bases legally. The decisive question is what kind of out ended the inning—not simply whether the runner crossed home before the defense made the out.

How to judge the play

  1. Check first base and the outs. This determines whether the batter may try for first on an ordinary uncaught third strike.
  2. Track the runner’s advance. The runner must touch the bases legally, including home, to score.
  3. Identify the third out. A batter-runner out before first, a force out, or a preceding runner’s out for missing a base cancels the run; a non-force tag out does not erase a run already scored.

Does the batter get a strikeout if they reach first?

Yes. On an ordinary dropped third strike, a batter who reaches first safely is still charged with a strikeout, and the pitcher is credited with one as well. MLB’s strikeout glossary describes the statistic; its dropped-third-strike explainer discusses the unusual play.

2026 ABS Challenge System exception

MLB’s April 13, 2026 explanation of the ABS Challenge System distinguishes a pitch initially called a ball and overturned to strike three. If the catcher drops that overturned pitch, MLB says the batter is out without needing a tag or force play. Do not treat that special case as an ordinary third strike that the catcher simply fails to catch.

Which rulebook applies?

The rule explanation here is scoped to MLB. The linked official rule text is the 2019 edition, and the MLB explainer and glossary restate the conventional dropped-third-strike rule. Youth, school, and other amateur competitions may adopt different rules or modifications, so check the rules governing the specific game rather than assuming MLB rules apply.
