An NHL goalie start affects a team’s game plan chiefly through readiness and workload: coaches weigh expected performance against rest, recent starts, the schedule, the opponent and the strength of the other goalie available. The choice can shape how the team manages its goaltenders, but it does not, by itself, establish that the skaters will change their forecheck or defensive system. Pulling a goalie for an extra attacker is a separate in-game decision.
What coaches weigh before choosing a starter
A starting goalie is not always a simple “best goalie plays” decision. Coaches balance expected performance with whether each goalie is rested and ready, how demanding the schedule is, and how closely matched the tandem is. The Seattle Kraken’s 2022 explanation of goalie workload describes these factors as part of deciding how to use two goalies. Kraken goalie-workload analysis
- Recent workload and rest: How recently each goalie played and how many starts they have had can influence the choice.
- Tandem ability: If the second goalie is close in ability, resting the more frequently used goalie may be preferable to starting that goalie again on short rest.
- Schedule and travel: A back-to-back, road travel or a late arrival between games can affect readiness and recovery options.
- Opponent and timing: Coaches may consider the opponent and which goalie has had more time since their last appearance.
There is no universal weighting formula in the available reporting. A coach’s stated matchup rationale may clarify the decision, but labels such as “starter” and “backup” alone do not show which goalie is the better choice for a particular night.
Why a back-to-back does not guarantee a goalie split
Teams commonly consider splitting the two games of a back-to-back, but it is not a fixed rule. In a January 2022 Kraken article, then-head coach Dave Hakstol said, “Typically you’re going to have a split on the back-to-backs.” The same account explains that teams can vary the order based on the opponent and how long each goalie has been off. That is a description of common practice in that context, not a promise that every team will alternate goalies.

- REFLEX BUILDER: The Champro Reaction Ball is designed to bounce randomly, so athletes can enhance their hand-eye coordination and improve reaction time.
- VERSATILE: Train with the Reaction Ball to prepare for any sport. Athletes honing their skills to perform in baseball, softball, football, soccer, or hockey games can decrease their reaction time, improve alertness, and enhance agility.
- SOLO OR PARTNER TRAINING: Train solo by throwing the reaction ball against a wall or work with a partner to create drills with extreme and unexpected flight paths.
- DURABILITY: The ball is made of highly durable, long-lasting rubber
- FUN: Not only is this item a great way to train for all sports, but it’s also an entertaining way to play with your dog, kids, or friends.
Workload figures also need context. The Kraken article reported that an Eric Tulsky analysis from 2013 found a save-percentage decline of just over 11 percent when a goalie played both nights of a back-to-back. The article noted that later analyses suggested a smaller effect, so that historical finding should not be treated as a settled forecast for every goalie. Why being the backup may not mean a full rest day
A goalie listed as the backup still has to warm up and be ready to enter. NHL.com reporting published in November 2025 describes teams using a third goalie to let another goalie sit out entirely, which may protect recovery time or avoid extra practice and travel demands. These choices depend on the roster and situation; they are not a universal league-wide prescription. NHL.com on goalie workload management

- Innovative, slick pad wax, made with quality soy wax.
Seattle goalie Joey Daccord described the mental distinction in that report: “Any goalie will tell you that when you back up, yeah, it is a little less mental stress, but at the same time it’s always the back of your head that you may have to go in, and you always have to be ready.” His comment captures why sitting as backup can differ from being left out of the game-day role altogether.
What the starter does—and does not—tell you about the skaters
The starting-goalie announcement is evidence about the team’s readiness and workload plan. It is not, on its own, evidence that the team will change its forecheck, defensive structure or line matchups. Any claim that a particular goalie’s style leads to a particular team system needs to be tied to a specific, documented coach or matchup rather than inferred from the starter alone.

- 72" GOALIE SHOOTING TARGET:Upgraded 7-hole layout, highly replicating the scoring area in a match. Practice shooting by hitting the corners and beating the goalkeeper to effectively improve shooting accuracy and technique.
- 600D THICKENED TARGET NET : This hockey shooting tarp is made of thickened 600D polyester fabric with reinforced stitching, providing stronger wear resistance and water repellency. It can withstand the most difficult shots while maintaining its shape and withstanding various environmental tests.
- REALISTIC GAME SCENARIOS: High-contrast, realistic goalkeeper patterns recreate real game scenarios. Through intensive training focused on locking onto target areas, players can learn to break through the goalkeeper's defence in real matches.
- EASY TO INSTALL: Reinforced straps fit snugly on any standard 72" X 48" Hockey Goal and can be installed in less than a minute, completely solving the problem of target net displacement during training. The foldable structure is convenient for transportation and storage.
A goalie change and a goalie pull are different decisions
Replacing a goalie during play responds to the game and the goalie’s performance; pulling a goalie to add a sixth attacker is a tactical risk taken to create an extra skater. A starter announcement does not predict when a coach will make either in-game choice.
Former NHL coach Paul MacLean has described coaches weighing the score, time remaining, faceoff location, standings implications and the chance of salvaging a point when deciding whether to use an extra attacker, including when trailing by multiple goals. He also emphasized that the sixth skater needs defined responsibilities: “He can’t just be out there and be a decoration.” That is why teams practice where the extra attacker goes, how they enter and what role they take. MacLean’s examples, reported by NHL.com in 2018, explain the considerations rather than establish a current league-wide frequency. NHL.com on coaches’ extra-attacker decisions

A practical way to compare two goalie options
When two goalies are plausible starters, assess the decision using these questions rather than assuming a fixed hierarchy:
- Who is better rested? Compare their recent starts and time since their last game.
- How close are they in expected ability? The value of resting one goalie depends partly on the strength of the other option.
- What does the schedule demand? Account for a back-to-back, travel and recovery opportunities.
- Is there a specific matchup reason? Look for the coach’s stated rationale instead of inferring one from the opponent alone.
- Can the roster give the non-starter a real break? A third goalie may make sitting out possible, but that depends on roster availability.
These factors help explain why a team might start either goalie on a given night; they do not yield a universal formula for predicting the choice.
