Overwatch 2 has two different systems players may call “XP”: Battle Pass XP moves the Battle Pass track you have selected, while Hero progression advances for the specific Hero you play in eligible modes. Matches and challenges contribute to Battle Pass progress; playing a Hero—not Custom Games—contributes to that Hero’s progression. Blizzard’s published explanations do not give a current XP-per-match formula, so there is no reliable official number of matches needed to earn a tier.
How do you get Battle Pass XP?
Play matches and complete available daily and weekly challenges. Blizzard says match XP is awarded after games and that challenges offer additional Battle Pass XP. Check the current Challenges and Battle Pass screens in-game for available tasks and displayed rewards; the official explanations do not establish current numeric awards for each match or challenge.

Battle Pass XP advances the reward track you are pursuing. In Blizzard’s Battle Pass revamp announcement, Product Director Chris McCabe explained: “You earn Battle Pass XP as you do normally, but your XP will now be applied to the ‘track’ you’ve selected.” The revamped pass is described as 80 tiers divided into shorter tracks: after the introductory track, you choose a track, can switch the active one, and select another after completing it. See Blizzard’s Battle Pass revamp explanation.
What is the difference between Battle Pass XP and Hero progression?
These systems track different things and award different kinds of progress:

| System | What advances it | What it progresses |
|---|---|---|
| Battle Pass XP | Matches and daily or weekly challenges, as described in Blizzard’s Battle Pass overview. | The currently selected Battle Pass reward track. |
| Hero progression | Playing a particular Hero in any mode except Custom Games, according to Blizzard’s Progression 2.0 explanation. | That Hero’s progression levels, badges, portrait borders, and Hero-specific progression rewards. |
How does Hero progression work?
Hero progression is tied to the Hero you play, rather than being a substitute for Battle Pass XP. Blizzard says playing a Hero in any mode other than Custom Games advances that Hero’s progression. Every 20 Hero progression levels awards an Ascended portrait border, which automatically applies when you play that Hero in a match. The system also includes badges and Hero-specific rewards.
Blizzard describes the first 20 Hero progression levels as having a gentler experience curve, with the curve flattening at level 20 to a standard amount of time played. The article does not publish numeric thresholds or XP-per-match amounts, so it cannot be used to calculate an exact number of games to reach a level.

Does winning give more Battle Pass XP?
The official pages cited here do not establish a current win-versus-loss XP amount or a current per-match rate. Blizzard’s launch-era Battle Pass overview said grouping with friends gave a 20% Battle Pass XP bonus per match, but that is a historical statement, not a confirmed rule for the current season. Check the in-game Battle Pass and challenge details for current terms rather than relying on old totals or player-calculated rates.
Is XP the same as Competitive rank or account level?
No. Battle Pass XP fills a Battle Pass track, and Hero progression tracks play with individual Heroes. Competitive rank is a separate competitive placement and progression system. Blizzard’s Overwatch 2 Competitive update also said the game would not use the former portrait-level system; match experience was directed toward Battle Pass levels.

Why might a match appear not to award XP?
An August 22, 2026 post on the Blizzard Overwatch forum relayed a developer statement that Blizzard was investigating reports of slow Battle Pass progression, particularly some Stadium matches that were not awarding the correct XP. The statement mentioned five Battle Pass tier skips for players who logged in during the specified August 24–September 1 window. That dated report does not establish whether the issue is active now or whether every player received the skips.
If a match does not seem to move your Battle Pass, check the Battle Pass track you selected and the progress shown after the match, then review current in-game notices or official support updates. A missing Hero progression gain is a separate question: Custom Games are excluded from that system.
