Wabbajack is an automated installer that recreates a game modlist on your PC from a manifest and the mod files it references. It downloads files from their original sources, processes them, and sets up the list in a separate installation folder. It does not necessarily give you one bundled archive containing every mod: some lists require you to download files yourself or complete setup steps after installation.
What Wabbajack does
A modlist author prepares a manifest that describes the files and setup for a particular list. Wabbajack uses that information to obtain the referenced archives, check and process them, and build the installation. For Nexus-hosted files, Wabbajack says it uses the official Nexus API to retrieve download links. Other files may come from different sources or require manual handling.
Wabbajack automates installation; it does not remove the list author’s requirements or guarantee that every file will always remain available. Read the list’s README for required game content, external downloads, version or storefront restrictions, and final setup steps.
Choose how to start the installation

These steps follow the official modlist installation guide. In either case, read the list README before proceeding and obtain any external files it specifies.

Set the folders up correctly
Wabbajack uses separate locations for downloaded archives and the installed list:
- Download folder: Holds acquired archives. You can reuse it across lists to avoid downloading the same files again.
- Installation folder: Holds the files for that particular modlist. Lists cannot be merged, and each needs its own installation location.
Do not set the installation folder to the game’s folder or Wabbajack’s own folder. The guide also advises against Windows-managed locations, including Program Files, Downloads, Desktop, and Documents. Windows protections can interfere with installs in these locations; OneDrive can also cause problems. Choose ordinary folders outside them for Wabbajack, downloads, and modlist installations.

What affects compatibility
Mod manager and game installer
Mod Organizer 2 (MO2) is the only mod manager named as officially supported on Wabbajack’s supported-games page. The standard author workflow uses a portable MO2 instance. In that workflow, the author documentation says Wabbajack does not work with Vortex, Kortex, Wyre Bash, Nexus Mod Manager, Oblivion Mod Manager, or MO1.
There are exceptions to the standard MO2 setup: Wabbajack also has a native-game-installer option for games that do not use MO2, and some supported games use other methods that involve more manual steps. Check the supported-games and mod-managers page and the specific list README rather than assuming every game follows the same installation method.

Game version and storefront
Some game and store combinations are marked experimental or platform-locked. A platform-locked list is built around files for a particular storefront, although the documentation notes that some lists may work across platforms. The target list’s README is the authority for its required game version and storefront.
Required base-game editions and downloadable content also vary by list. For example, some Skyrim lists require particular Anniversary Edition or Creation Club content, which may need to be downloaded in game. Do not apply those Skyrim-specific steps to other games. For Microsoft Store or Game Pass versions of Bethesda games, script-extender constraints can affect compatibility; check the list instructions and troubleshooting guidance.

How long installation takes
The official guide describes the process as taking anywhere from a few minutes to hours, depending on list size, internet connection, and hardware. That is a qualitative range, not a guaranteed completion time; a list with more or larger downloads can take longer.

A download fails
Check the latest Wabbajack log to identify which file failed. The troubleshooting FAQ says some files can be downloaded manually and placed in the list’s downloads folder. If a source file has been removed, the list may remain unavailable until its author recompiles it.

Every Nexus download fails
If all Nexus files fail, check that your Nexus login is valid or refresh it. Other download failures may involve network settings, connection speed, or too many concurrent downloads. Use the error log to distinguish among these possibilities rather than changing settings at random.
The install is blocked or the game files do not match
If the install fails around a protected folder, move Wabbajack’s app, download folder, and list installation to ordinary locations outside Windows-managed folders. If the error concerns game files or content, compare the exact requirement in the README with your installed game and storefront. The FAQ and supported-games page can help identify platform-specific constraints, but requirements for one list should not be assumed to apply to another.
Are Wabbajack modlists free?
The official Wabbajack FAQ says modlists must be available for free and that donations cannot be exchanged for access or content. Nexus is one source for downloads, but the cited official pages do not establish that a paid Nexus membership is required for Wabbajack.
