Buy whichever 2TB drive costs less from a trustworthy seller, provided its exact heatsink configuration fits your PC or console. The Samsung 990 PRO has slightly higher manufacturer-rated sequential speeds, but those peak figures do not show that it will feel faster in everyday use or games. Both are PCIe 4.0 M.2 2280 drives with a published 1,200 TBW endurance rating and five-year limited warranty.
Samsung 990 PRO vs. WD Black SN850X: key specifications
These are premium PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSDs in the M.2 2280 form factor, not PCIe 5.0 drives. Their published maximums are close; they are manufacturer-rated peaks, not results from a shared head-to-head test.
| Specification | Samsung 990 PRO 2TB | WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB |
|---|---|---|
| Interface and form factor | PCIe 4.0 x4, NVMe 2.0, M.2 2280 [Samsung datasheet] | PCIe Gen 4, M.2 2280 [WD datasheet] |
| Sequential read / write | Up to 7,450 / 6,900 MB/s [Samsung datasheet] | Up to 7,300 / 6,600 MB/s [WD datasheet] |
| Random read / write | Up to 1.4M / 1.55M IOPS [Samsung datasheet] | Up to 1.2M / 1.1M IOPS [WD datasheet] |
| Endurance | 1,200 TBW [Samsung datasheet] | 1,200 TBW [WD datasheet] |
| Warranty | Five-year limited warranty, or until the TBW limit is reached [Samsung datasheet] | Five years or maximum TBW, whichever occurs first; check regional terms [WD datasheet] |
Samsung’s figures are from its 990 PRO announcement and datasheet; WD’s are from its June 2024 SN850X datasheet. Samsung notes that performance can vary with firmware, hardware and configuration, and that its write speed uses Intelligent TurboWrite within a specific transfer size. WD also cautions that results vary with host, use conditions and capacity. Neither set of maxima promises those speeds in sustained transfers or on every system.
Does the Samsung 990 PRO feel faster?
Not on the evidence of the rated numbers alone. Samsung’s sequential read and write maxima are 150 MB/s and 300 MB/s higher, respectively, while its published random IOPS maxima are also higher. These are vendor specifications measured under their own conditions, not a matched test of the two drives. They cannot be translated directly into shorter game load times or a noticeable improvement in general responsiveness.

PC Gamer’s 2026 gaming SSD guide gives both 2TB drives an 87% score. Its testing description includes synthetic benchmarks, copying a 30GB game install, PCMark10 and a game-level load test; its editorial advice cautions that paying extra for the Samsung may not make sense when similar performance is available for less. That is useful buying context, not proof that every workload performs identically. [PC Gamer’s gaming SSD guide]
Which drive is better value?
Current October 2026 local prices, stock and regional availability have not been established here, so there is no reliable universal price winner. Compare the exact 2TB model and heatsink version you need at purchase time, including seller and warranty terms. If both fit your system and the cheaper listing is from a trustworthy seller, the lower-priced option is the sensible default: the published specification differences do not establish a practical reason to pay a premium.

- This product has been replaced by our latest generation. Please search for the SANDISK Optimus GX 7100 NVMe SSD
- HIGH-OCTANE GAMING. Experience speeds up to 7,250MB/s read and 6,900MB/s write (1-2TB models), with up to 35% faster performance than previous generation.
- PURPOSE-BUILT. Designed for serious on-the-go gamers, with a PCIe Gen4 interface and SANDISK’s next generation TLC 3D NAND.
- MORE TIME TO CLEAR THAT CHECKPOINT. Built with laptops and handheld gaming devices in mind, with up to 100% more power efficiency over the previous generation.
- DO MORE WITH DASHBOARD. Ensure your drive is optimized for prime performance with the downloadable WD_BLACK Dashboard (Windows only).
- Choose the 990 PRO if its price is competitive and you value Samsung’s higher rated peak figures or Samsung Magician drive-management software.
- Choose the SN850X if it is cheaper, or if its heatsink-equipped model better suits the host. WD lists the 2TB heatsink model as WDS200T2XHE and the bare model as WDS200T2X0E.
Which one should you buy for gaming or PS5?
For a gaming PC
Either drive is a strong fit for a compatible PCIe 4.0 M.2 slot. Choose by price, physical fit and cooling rather than assuming one will make games load noticeably faster. Samsung lists Magician software; WD lists WD_BLACK Dashboard for Windows and Game Mode 2.0 for the SN850X. Those features may matter for management or a Windows setup, but do not override compatibility and price without a specific need.
For PlayStation 5
Check the console’s fit guidance and the exact product SKU before ordering. WD’s datasheet explicitly identifies the SN850X heatsink model as PS5-compatible; it does not extend that statement to the bare model. Samsung’s product information describes the 990 PRO for PC and PlayStation 5 gaming, but you should still confirm that the exact configuration you buy meets the console’s installation and clearance requirements. - PCIe Gen 3x4 interface with read speeds up to 2,200MB/s and write speeds up to 1,600MB/s
- TBW=1200
- The warranty terms on all of its SSDs are based on whether the warranty length or TBW limit occurs first.
- To support a Silicon Power PCIe SSD, the system must have an M. 2 connector with only an M key. The Silicon Power PCIe SSD does not have a b notch and therefore, the b key on the SSD connector will prevent it from being inserted

For a laptop
Confirm that the laptop supports an M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 drive and check physical clearance, cooling limits, and any single- or double-sided module restrictions specified by its manufacturer. Compatibility with a particular laptop model is not established by the SSD specifications alone. A PCIe 3.0 slot or a platform with other limits may also prevent either drive from reaching its rated PCIe 4.0 peaks.
Do you need a heatsink version?
That depends on the device, not simply on which SSD wins a speed comparison. Both product lines have heatsink and non-heatsink variants; check the exact SKU and dimensions. A motherboard may provide its own M.2 cover or heatsink, while a console installation has its own clearance requirements. Avoid stacking or substituting cooling hardware without checking fit.

Do endurance and warranty make one the safer choice?
Both manufacturers publish 1,200 TBW endurance for the 2TB versions and a five-year limited warranty. The warranty is subject to its stated time and endurance limits, and WD directs buyers to regional warranty terms. These figures provide no clear published advantage to either drive; they are not evidence of equal or different real-world failure rates.
Neither a shared TBW rating nor warranty length establishes long-term reliability for an exact model. No comparable exact-model failure-rate study is established here, so choosing one as more reliable would go beyond the available evidence.

How to make the final choice
- Check the host: verify an M.2 2280 NVMe slot, supported PCIe generation and any console or laptop-specific requirements.
- Match the cooling: decide whether you need a bare drive or a factory heatsink, and verify dimensions and clearance.
- Compare the exact listings: weigh current local price, seller trustworthiness and applicable warranty terms for the same 2TB configuration.
- Buy the better fit at the better price: choose Samsung if its cost is competitive and its software or rated peaks matter to you; otherwise, the SN850X is equally defensible when it fits and costs less.
