Instead, it asks players to recreate their Inquisitor and select three decisions from Inquisition. BioWare says it chose those decisions because they could shape this story in meaningful ways, while setting the adventure in Northern Thedas gives it distance from many choices rooted in the South. A choice that gets no callback is not thereby erased or declared non-canon.
Why Dragon Age continuity is difficult to carry forward
The Dragon Age games let players make decisions that shape their own version of Thedas. Those choices can affect people, institutions and political outcomes, which makes continuity personal—but also creates a growing number of possible world states for a later game to acknowledge.
Dragon Age: Inquisition addressed that history with Dragon Age Keep, a tool for selecting relevant choices from Origins and Dragon Age II before bringing them into the game. The Veilguard takes a narrower route: it does not import a full Keep world state. Instead, players make a small number of selections during character creation. BioWare describes the game as a single-player RPG; it launched on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC on October 31, 2024, according to EA’s launch announcement.
Which previous choices can you set in The Veilguard?
In the character creator, players recreate the Inquisitor and set three decisions from Inquisition:
#1 Best Overall
- This video game is an immersive action role-playing game (RPG). Play Dragon Age: The Veilguard and become the leader others believe in
- SAVE A BATTERED WORLD - Enter Thedas, a vibrant world of rugged wilderness, treacherous labyrinths and glittering cities. The world is teetering on a knife’s edge while corrupt gods unleash havoc across the continent. Nations war and factions splinter. Who will you trust? From the Arlathan Forest to the back alleys of Minrathous, this is a broken world. Your actions will affect the fate of Thedas forever.
- Unite THE VEILGUARD - Unite a team of seven companions, each with rich lives and deep backstories. These are characters to befriend, and even fall in love with. Among them, an assassin, a necromancer, a detective, each and all bringing their own expertise and unique abilities to the fight. You are never alone, decide who to take into battle and together face down demons, dragons and corrupt gods.
- BECOME THE LEADER OTHERS BELIEVE IN - Select from different races and combat classes, customize your appearance, choose your character’s backstory and begin your journey as Rook, Dragon Age’s newest hero. The choice is yours. Brace yourself, there are tough decisions to be made, allies to inspire, and a fight that needs every sword, staff and bow you can muster.
- The Inquisitor’s romance. Available choices depend on the Inquisitor’s gender and lineage, as they did in Inquisition.
- The Inquisition’s fate. You choose whether it was disbanded.
- The Inquisitor’s intention toward Solas. You choose whether the Inquisitor vowed to stop him or save him.
These selections establish the version of the Inquisition story that The Veilguard can draw on. They are not a full import of decisions from all three previous games.
Why BioWare narrowed the callbacks
Creative director John Epler told IGN that the team focused on past choices it could reflect substantively, rather than including decisions that would amount only to a cameo or a single-line acknowledgement. In his explanation, fewer callbacks could mean more meaningful reactivity for the choices the game does use. Read Epler’s interview with IGN.

The setting also helps establish distance. The story takes place in Northern Thedas, while some major decisions in earlier games have their most direct consequences in the South. Epler used the example of who became Divine: that decision need not dominate a story set far to the north, where regional politics and circumstances differ. This is his explanation for the design, not evidence that the southern consequences cease to exist in the fiction.
What an unmentioned choice means—and what it does not
Epler says BioWare wants, where possible, to avoid contradicting previous events or invalidating players’ choices. He also makes a distinction between a decision remaining part of a player’s story and the current game addressing it. The Veilguard may leave many earlier decisions untouched; that silence is not the same as reversing them.
Rank #3
- This video game is an immersive single player role-playing game in which you become full of hope; unite the guardian of the veil and defy the gods in Dragon Age: The Veilguard
- Save the baggy world: Enter Thedas, a vivid world full of raw wildlife, betracherous mazes and sparkling cities; the world stands on the edge of a knife when the corrupt gods on the continent create chaos
- Collect the curtain cover: you can make friends with these characters and even fall in love, among them there is a killer, necromant, and detective who bring their knowledge and unique skills to the battle

- SELECT YOUR GAMING WAYS : In your adventures, you will gain new skills and discover unique, powerful artifacts that will allow you to improve your own fighting style; get ready
BioWare’s stated position is also that there is no single official canon for player choices in Dragon Age. The game is not declaring one player’s past decisions correct and another’s wrong simply by choosing which parts to revisit. Its narrower set of callbacks defines what this story actively reflects, not a universal replacement for players’ histories.

The choice limits also fit the shift in protagonist. Epler contrasts the Inquisitor, who could become a figure with immense political weight, with Rook, who has to earn trust and standing. Rather than inheriting the Inquisitor’s authority, Rook enters a world where that prior history can matter without making the new protagonist’s role a foregone conclusion.

The central crisis still grows out of Inquisition: Rook is recruited to stop Solas’ ritual, and the story brings Rook into conflict with Solas and the elven gods he has released. BioWare’s introductory journal presents the adventure as a crafted, character-driven RPG spanning places including Rivain, Weisshaupt, Arlathan, Minrathous and the Deep Roads, with Warrior, Mage and Rogue classes and advanced specializations. The new protagonist and northern setting provide an entry point, but the Solas plot remains a direct connection to the earlier game.
