They may look tarot-like at a glance, but the system described so far is a knowledge inventory: each card represents something learned about the train, its objects or the people aboard.
How do the cards work?
As you investigate the train, discoveries add knowledge cards to sections of an album organized by topic. You can review that album, choose cards to equip and bring selected knowledge into encounters. The cards are not established as a physical tarot deck or a fortune-telling mechanic.
In GamesRadar’s hands-on report, a personal card used before speaking to a passenger let the conversation continue and produced a new finding. The practical loop is to gather information, select a relevant card and see whether it changes what a character will discuss or how you can proceed.
Use knowledge to open lines of inquiry
Prompts above characters hint at possible topics or questions. A card can act as a conversational key: equip a piece of information, approach a passenger and use it when the opportunity appears. A new response may reveal another detail to investigate, which can in turn add knowledge to your album.

Experiment with different cards
You can swap cards and try combinations when an obstacle or conversation does not move forward. That makes the album more than a record of completed discoveries: it is also the player’s working set of clues. The available reporting describes cards helping with dialogue checks and other barriers, but does not establish that every card works everywhere or that there is one universal combination.
What kind of mystery is Dreadline Express?
Steam describes the game as a first-person psychological-horror metroidbrainia aboard the “last human train.” You explore the train, meet a small number of survivors and investigate its mysteries. Each passenger has a story, and the card system connects what you learn to how you can question them.

The official store description says, “Behind every door lies a mystery and every passenger has a story to tell.” It also presents the game as allowing more than one approach: “There is never only one right answer — this is your story.” These are promotional claims; the hands-on account supports experimentation with cards, rather than proving how many outcomes or routes the full game contains.
How it compares with Her Story
The comparison in the headline is best understood as a comparison of appeal: both invite players to investigate a story by interpreting information. The evidence available for Dreadline Express describes a distinct mechanic in which acquired knowledge is equipped as cards and used in conversations and progression. It does not establish that the two games have equivalent systems.

Is there a demo, and when is the full game due?
As of the Steam listing checked October 7, 2026, the free demo was listed as released on June 15, 2026, and described as the player’s first moments aboard the train. The full game was listed for a planned October 2026 release but was not yet available on Steam at that check. Because that month is already underway and storefront status can change quickly, check the Steam listing before planning to play. The supplied listing URL does not identify a specific game page, so it is not a direct link to the title.

Steam lists Dreadline Express as a single-player Windows PC game. Its full-game listing shows interface and subtitles in 11 languages: English, Czech, French, German, Spanish (Spain), Japanese, Korean, Ukrainian, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian and Simplified Chinese. The language table does not mark a full-audio language.

The listed minimum requirements are a 64-bit processor and operating system, a 2.4 GHz dual-core processor, 2 GB RAM, GTX 970 or equivalent graphics, DirectX 10 and 1 GB of storage. Although the game listing shows Windows 7, Steam notes that its client requires Windows 10 or later; those are separate compatibility details.
Steam’s content note flags mortality and consciousness, with death, suicide and violence implied through dialogue and environment, and says the material may evoke melancholy and hopelessness.
