GOG games can be installed and played for their offline single-player features without GOG GALAXY. Sign in to your GOG account in a web browser, download a game’s offline backup installers, run the setup files, then launch the installed game executable. The key distinction is that “DRM-free” does not mean every feature works offline: multiplayer and other online services need a connection, and some features may depend on GALAXY.
What “DRM-free” means for a GOG game
Digital rights management, or DRM, is a restriction that can make access to a game depend on an authorization check, a client application, or an internet connection. GOG’s policy is that its games should not require GALAXY authentication, the GALAXY client, or an internet connection for their offline single-player functions. In practical terms, you can download the offline installer files, install the game, and launch it without using GALAXY.

That policy concerns access to the game’s offline single-player experience; it is not a promise that every menu, service, or game mode will work without a network. Online multiplayer, leaderboards, and other services that rely on online systems require connectivity. GOG’s developer information also notes that features such as achievements may be unavailable offline or may require GALAXY. If one particular mode or feature matters to you, check that game’s feature information rather than inferring its requirements from the “DRM-free” label alone.

GOG’s 2022 DRM-free commitment says the GALAXY client “is and will remain optional for accessing single-player offline mode.” That is the useful distinction: the client is optional for the offline single-player mode, while some connected or client-supported features are separate. GOG also says its quality-assurance process checks releases for DRM and expects single-player aspects to work without GALAXY or an internet connection. This describes GOG’s policy and QA approach, not a guarantee that every peripheral feature or every future computer configuration will behave identically.

Choose between GALAXY and offline installers
There are two practical routes to a GOG game. GALAXY is the convenient client route for installing, updating, and accessing supported connected features. Offline backup installers are the browser-based route when you want the installation files themselves and do not want the game’s offline single-player access to depend on the client.

You do not have to make a permanent all-or-nothing choice. You can use the browser installers for a particular game and still choose GALAXY for convenience or a supported connected feature elsewhere. The important thing is to distinguish the method used to install a game from the requirements of a particular mode inside it.
Install a game without GALAXY
The browser route still begins with your GOG account. “Offline” describes installing and playing from files you have downloaded; it does not mean that you can obtain a purchased game without going through your account or the store. Download the required installer files before you expect to install without a connection.

- Sign in through a browser. Open your GOG account and go to your library.
- Open the game’s download options. Select “DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS” for the game.
- Download the required setup files. Save the files to a location you can find. If the game’s download is split into more than one setup file, download the required files before starting installation.
- Run the setup application. Open the downloaded setup application and follow its installation prompts. If you want to install without internet access, do this after you have downloaded the necessary files.
- Launch the installed game. Open the game’s installation directory and run the game executable.
GOG’s support guidance recommends a download manager if browser downloads are corrupted. This is troubleshooting advice for unreliable or damaged downloads, not a prerequisite for installing or playing offline. If a download fails, first confirm that the files finished downloading; if the browser copy appears corrupted, try the recommended download-manager approach and download the files again.
What to expect when launching the game
Installation and launch are separate steps. The setup application installs the game; the executable in the installed game directory starts it. If a desktop shortcut opens GALAXY when you are trying to avoid the client, go to the game’s directory and launch the game executable directly. This gives you a client-independent way to start the offline game, provided the game’s offline single-player functions are the ones you intend to use.
Do not treat a shortcut’s behavior as proof that the game itself requires GALAXY. The direct-executable route is the appropriate check when the shortcut opens the client. Conversely, if the game’s own feature information says a specific mode depends on an online service or GALAXY, starting the executable directly does not remove that requirement.

What works offline—and what may not
Think of offline play in terms of what the feature needs, not simply whether the game is labelled DRM-free. A self-contained single-player mode is the use case GOG’s policy addresses. A feature that communicates with other players or an online service has a different dependency.
- Offline single-player: GOG says the full single-player experience should work without a client or internet access, and its policy makes GALAXY optional for offline single-player.
- Multiplayer: Online multiplayer requires a network connection. Depending on the specific game, a connected feature may also use GALAXY.
- Leaderboards and online statistics: These rely on online services, so they are not available as offline services.
- Achievements and similar client-supported features: GOG’s developer information says some features, including achievements, may require GALAXY. Do not assume these will be available through the offline installer route.
The distinction matters when choosing what to download and how to launch. If your goal is a solo session, offline installers address the client-independent installation question. If your goal is a specific online mode, achievement system, or leaderboard, confirm that feature’s requirements for the individual game and plan to use the connection or client it needs.
Keep installer backups if you want them
GOG says users can make backup copies of downloaded games. Keeping the offline installer files is an optional preservation step: it is not necessary just to play a game you have already installed. A separate external drive is one possible place to store copies, but GOG does not specify a required drive type, capacity, or brand.

Store the complete set of installer files together, and keep them somewhere you can identify later. If you expect to reinstall without internet access, the useful backup is the installer set you need for that game—not merely a shortcut or a copy of the game’s name in a folder. The account-based browser download remains the route for retrieving installers from GOG when you have access to your account and the store.

The browser download is incomplete or corrupted
Check that the download finished and that you have the required setup files before running the installer. If browser downloads are corrupted, GOG’s support guidance recommends trying a download manager. This addresses the integrity or reliability of the download; it does not change whether GALAXY is required for offline play.

Open the game’s installation directory and run its executable directly. The shortcut may be configured to open the client, while the direct executable provides a way to start the installed game without following that shortcut. This applies to the offline game functions; it cannot make a client-supported or online feature work offline.

The game opens, but a feature is unavailable
Identify the feature rather than treating the whole game as either “offline” or “online.” A single-player mode may work while multiplayer, leaderboards, online statistics, or achievements do not. Check the individual game’s feature information for the mode you need; GOG’s general DRM-free policy does not establish that every feature in every title works without a network or client.
You want to install while disconnected
Download the offline backup installers while you have account and store access, then run the setup application from those downloaded files. The browser route is not a way to bypass the initial account-based download. If you have not saved the installer files, you will need to access your GOG account to retrieve them before you can use this installation method.
Which route should you use?
Use the offline installers when you want a browser-based installation and client-independent access to a game’s offline single-player functions, or when you want to keep copies of the installer files. Use GALAXY when its installation and update convenience or supported connected features are useful to you. For a game that mixes solo and online features, decide based on the feature you plan to use: the offline single-player route does not imply that online services or client-supported features are also available offline.
