Elden Ring earns the “better than anyone else” praise most convincingly when the subject is cloth as a storytelling tool. Its capes, robes, hoods, fur, wrappings and banners do more than complete an outfit: their cut changes a body’s silhouette, their material suggests a character’s history, and their movement gives animation a physical afterlife. That is the argument in Polygon’s June 20, 2024 video essay, and it is best understood as a critic’s aesthetic judgment rather than a measured claim that no other game has superior cloth technology.
What the claim is really about
The “this” in the title is not the entire design of Elden Ring. Polygon’s essay asks how much storytelling can be done with a few yards of cloth, especially in the run-up to Shadow of the Erdtree. Its central idea is that costume construction can communicate character before a person speaks, attacks or receives a line of exposition.
The essay organizes that reading around three lenses: make, material and movement. Together they explain why a simple hood can establish an archetype, why a torn hem can imply a life of hardship, and why a cloak that keeps settling after a stop can make a character feel physically present. These are interpretive categories from the video, not laboratory measurements of cloth quality.

Make, material and movement at a glance
| Lens | What to inspect | Storytelling work |
|---|---|---|
| Make | Cut, construction, silhouette and how a garment conceals or reshapes the body | Signals role, faction, status and broad character archetype at a glance |
| Material | Texture, surface quality, color, wear and apparent weight | Suggests wealth, environment, condition, mood and the contrast between the living body and its equipment |
| Movement | How cloth responds to walking, attacks, stops, wind and contact with the world | Adds secondary motion, reinforces a material’s apparent behavior and can deliberately become uncanny |
Using the three lenses keeps the discussion specific. Instead of saying that a costume “looks cool,” you can ask what its shape hides, what its surface implies and what its motion tells you that a static screenshot cannot.
Make: the cut of a garment changes the character underneath
“Make” concerns the garment as a constructed object. A hood narrows the visible face. A robe extends the torso and suppresses the outline of the legs. A cloak broadens the shoulders, while a wrapped bandage can make the body appear fragmented or vulnerable. The same body can read as a pilgrim, soldier, aristocrat or monster depending on which parts the clothing reveals and which parts it turns into a single graphic shape.

The Grafted Scion and the power of a simple covering
Polygon’s essay uses the Grafted Scion’s covering to show how little information a shape needs to redirect your reading of a creature. The covering is not merely protection for a boss fight. It alters the silhouette and controls where the eye looks, making the figure feel more like a designed presence than a collection of limbs and statistics. The interpretation belongs to the essay; it is not presented as a confirmed statement of FromSoftware’s intent.
This is an important distinction between equipment as inventory and clothing as characterization. An item can provide a defense value without changing the narrative impression of the wearer. A shaped garment, by contrast, can conceal anatomy, exaggerate a posture or create a recognizable outline before the player knows the name of the enemy.

The video essay points to familiar costume archetypes: hooded figures, traveling cloaks, robes, armor and tapestries. Players have learned to read these forms quickly because games, films and historical imagery have repeatedly associated them with certain social roles. Elden Ring benefits from that shorthand while adding enough distortion and irregularity to keep the figures from feeling generic.
- Hoods reduce facial information and can make a person seem secretive, devotional or isolated.
- Traveling cloaks imply exposure to weather and movement between places, even before a character explains where they came from.
- Robes expand the body into a single flowing mass, which can suggest ritual, authority or a rejection of ordinary armor.
- Armor beneath cloth creates a visible tension between protection and display: the wearer is prepared for violence but still presenting an identity.
- Tapestries, hanging panels and long hems turn a figure into a moving emblem, allowing color and pattern to carry factional or ceremonial associations.
The shorthand is effective because it is immediate, not because it is absolute. A hooded character can be benevolent, hostile or absurd; the shape establishes an initial expectation that later details can confirm or overturn.
Material: texture and condition turn an outfit into evidence
Once the silhouette has established a first impression, material supplies evidence about how that character lives. Fur, polished metal, stained cloth, elastic-looking fabric and faded color do not carry the same social or physical implications. The essay treats these surfaces as part of the writing of a character, not as decoration added after the “real” design is finished.
Radahn’s fur and the impression of wildness
In the essay’s reading, the fur accents associated with Starscourge Radahn contribute to a wild or barbarian impression. Fur is bulky, irregular and visually tied to an animal source. Placed against armor and a massive body, it makes the character feel less like a uniformed officer and more like a force that has grown beyond civilized restraint. That is a critical interpretation of the costume, not verified developer commentary.
Rank #2
The detail works because it is legible at several distances. From far away, the fur breaks the outline into a rough, animal-like shape. Up close, its texture and color provide a contrast with harder armor surfaces. The player therefore receives both a rapid archetype and a richer material distinction when the camera moves closer.
Mohg’s red-and-gold theatricality
The essay reads Mohg’s elaborate red-and-gold presentation as theatrical, almost curtain-like. The colors are not neutral; they resemble stage drapery and ceremonial display. Long hanging forms frame the body instead of simply covering it, making the character appear to be presenting himself to an audience. The result is a sense of performance and ritual that a plain set of armor would not create.
Here, material and make reinforce each other. The color palette establishes spectacle, while the hanging construction behaves like a set of curtains around a performer. Removing either element would weaken the reading: red and gold alone could be merely regal, and a long robe without that palette might not feel deliberately theatrical.
The Godskin Duo and an unsettling surface
The Godskin Duo’s pale robes are described in the video as elastic-looking and flesh-like. Their apparent softness makes the garments difficult to separate mentally from the bodies wearing them. Instead of reassuring the viewer that cloth is a stable barrier between skin and world, the design suggests something that stretches, wobbles or has become biologically wrong.
This is a useful example of material being expressive even when it violates ordinary expectations. A robe does not have to move like a real robe or look like a historically accurate textile to communicate. An unnatural surface can be the point, especially in a setting where the boundary between body, clothing and supernatural transformation is unstable.
Movement: cloth continues the performance after the body stops
Movement is the category that makes Elden Ring’s garments feel active rather than painted onto a model. A character can stop instantly while a cloak continues to swing, collapse or settle. That follow-through is called secondary motion: movement that follows the primary action of the body. It gives the eye a second event to read after a sword swing, turn or sudden halt.
Rank #3
Why secondary motion matters
A cloak that settles a fraction of a second after its wearer stops suggests weight, drag and air resistance. It also smooths the transition between animation poses. Without that delayed response, a long garment would appear rigidly attached to the skeleton, making the character feel like a cutout. With it, the same stop has a physical consequence that the player can perceive without consciously analyzing the simulation.
Movement can also distinguish materials. A heavy panel should lag and fold differently from a thin strip. Fur should break into irregular tufts, while a polished plate should barely flex at all. When the response matches the apparent material, animation supports the visual claim made by the texture. When it deliberately does not, the mismatch can create unease.
When unnatural motion becomes characterization
The video essay highlights the Godskin Duo’s wobbling garments as an example of intentionally unnatural movement. The fabric’s behavior is not simply an attempt to imitate everyday cloth. Its elasticity and wobble contribute to the unsettling, flesh-like effect identified in the essay. In this case, technical plausibility is less important than expressive consistency: the motion feels wrong in a way that suits the enemies.
This distinction matters when judging cloth in a game. “Realistic” is not automatically better. A physically accurate simulation could undermine a supernatural character if it made the costume appear ordinary. Elden Ring’s strongest moments use movement to support the emotional reading established by make and material, whether that means convincing weight or purposeful grotesqueness.
The practical problems behind the effect
The essay also acknowledges that simulated cloth introduces production problems. Fabric can clip through a character’s body or armor, collide with weapons, intersect the environment and react badly when an animation changes direction. Timing has to be tuned so that the cloth follows the pose without visibly lagging behind for too long. Performance optimization places another limit: every extra simulation cost competes with the rest of the game’s rendering and animation budget.
- Clipping: cloth can pass through limbs, armor or scenery, breaking the illusion.
- Animation timing: delayed motion must be synchronized with the primary pose rather than floating independently.
- Optimization: the game must decide how much simulation detail can run while maintaining responsive play and stable performance.
These constraints make expressive results more notable, not less. The player sees the final movement, but not the compromises required to keep it readable during combat, traversal and camera changes.
Why cloth can communicate more than armor alone
Armor is highly informative in Elden Ring, but it tends to describe protection, rank, era or combat function. Cloth can carry those meanings while adding vulnerability, ritual and personality. A torn sleeve can imply damage without reducing defense. A trailing scarf can make a fighter appear less institutional. A robe can conceal the mechanics of the body, turning an ordinary animation into something ceremonial or alien.
Cloth also creates contrast. Hard armor against soft fabric makes both materials clearer. A bright lining glimpsed beneath a dark cloak can act as a flash of identity during motion. Fur beside metal separates the character from a manufactured war machine. Pale, flexible robes against a hostile arena can make the wearer seem physically wrong before the encounter begins.
That contrast is why the essay’s argument is about storytelling rather than graphics technology. The relevant question is not how many polygons a garment contains. It is whether shape, surface and movement consistently add information that the player can use.
How to read an Elden Ring costume yourself
You can apply the essay’s framework to any character, boss or non-player figure without knowing the item descriptions. Work from the largest visual facts to the smallest.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Start with the silhouette. Squint at the character or view them from a distance. Note what the clothing does to the proportions: does it broaden the shoulders, hide the face, lengthen the body or turn the figure into a single block?
- Identify the construction. Look for hoods, wraps, panels, seams, belts, fur collars and exposed joints. Ask which parts are concealed and which are deliberately displayed.
- Separate the materials. Compare cloth, leather, fur, metal and ornament. Record differences in gloss, roughness, stiffness and apparent weight instead of describing the outfit as one surface.
- Check condition and color. Stains, fading, fraying and repairs can suggest use or neglect. Strong color contrasts may signal ceremony, faction or performance.
- Watch a complete motion. Observe a walk, attack, turn and stop. Look for lag, settling, stretching and collision with the body or environment.
- Test the reading against the character’s role. Decide whether the garment’s shape, material and motion reinforce the impression made by the encounter, or intentionally contradict it.
This method separates observation from speculation. You can say that a robe broadens a silhouette or that a cloak continues moving after a stop; you should label the claim that those choices represent a specific emotion or biography as an interpretation.

The available evidence does not establish that superlative objectively. Polygon’s title and essay make a persuasive critical case, but they do not provide a controlled comparison, a scorecard or a published measurement of cloth quality, simulation quantity or performance. No figure in the available material proves that Elden Ring has the most advanced cloth system in games.
If you want to compare another game fairly, define the scope first. Use the same five axes suggested by the essay’s framework:
- Costume silhouette and construction: how clearly the cut communicates role or changes the body’s form.
- Material differentiation: whether texture, condition and color make fabrics feel distinct from one another and from armor.
- Animation and cloth response: how convincingly or expressively garments react to movement and the environment.
- Narrative information without dialogue: what the outfit tells you before exposition.
- Consistency with art direction: whether the choices support the game’s broader visual language rather than appearing as isolated technical demonstrations.
On those terms, the claim becomes useful: Elden Ring is unusually consistent at making cloth carry character information. It does not need to win every technical category for the combination of make, material and movement to feel distinctive.

Bandai Namco identifies ELDEN RING as a FromSoftware action RPG released on February 25, 2022. The official listing names PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, and indicates that physical and digital editions exist. Platform and storefront availability can vary by region, so check the current store for the system you use.
| Release or product | What the official information establishes |
|---|---|
| ELDEN RING base game | Released February 25, 2022; listed for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S; physical and digital editions are offered. |
| Shadow of the Erdtree | Expansion adding equipment, weapon skills, magic, enemies, bosses and plotlines; the base game is required. |
| ELDEN RING Tarnished Edition | In an August 28, 2026 announcement, Bandai Namco described a Nintendo Switch 2 edition with new classes, gear and Torrent skins for the game across supported platforms. Regional availability may differ. |
The expansion is not necessary to understand why the base game’s costumes work, but it is the relevant add-on if you are following the release context of the 2024 essay. A Collector’s Edition includes a statue and art book; those are physical extras, not requirements for playing the game or analyzing its cloth design.
Bandai Namco also called Elden Ring a 25-million-unit best seller in a June 21, 2024 announcement about the expansion. That is publisher-reported sales context, not evidence that its costume design is technically superior.
The lasting lesson for game art
Elden Ring’s cloth succeeds because the three parts of a costume keep agreeing with one another. The make establishes a readable shape. The material gives that shape a social and physical character. Movement tests the design in time, adding weight, drag or deliberate wrongness. When those decisions align, a garment can introduce a faction, mood or archetype before the player reads a nameplate.

A cloak is not empty space around armor, and a robe is not a decorative texture. Each can change what a body means, how an encounter feels and what the player understands before a single word is spoken.
