In a November 2024 appearance on the Joe Rogan podcast, Musk said he was among the world’s top 20 Diablo IV players. Contemporary coverage connected that claim to his placement on Helltides, a third-party Pit leaderboard. PC Gamer reported a #19 position based on a 2:45 run at the maximum tier; Forbes also reported #19 and later updated its account to say he had fallen to #22. Those figures are dated snapshots, not a permanent rank.
How authoritative was the leaderboard?
Helltides was described by PC Gamer as an informal leaderboard populated by user-submitted runs. It is evidence that Musk’s run appeared near the top of that list at the time, but it is not an official Blizzard ladder or a comprehensive ranking of every Diablo IV player. The distinction matters: “top 20” reflects a position on a particular submitted-run list, not a verified global standing across all players.

So how did a CEO of six companies find time to play?
The available reporting does not establish how much time Musk spent on Diablo IV, when he played, or how long he prepared for the Pit runs. TechCrunch’s “six companies” framing describes his executive roles when that article was published on January 8, 2025; it does not reveal his schedule. Fortune reported a three-hour Diablo IV livestream in January 2024, which shows earlier public play but does not quantify the time behind the later achievement.
A high-level clear and a short posted run duration do not tell readers how many attempts, character-building hours, or other players’ assistance—if any—were involved. It would be speculation to turn the two-minute clip into an estimate of his total playtime.

Was the Diablo IV run boosted?
Forbes’ November 2024 report said speculation that Musk had been boosted was unsupported by evidence available to that article. A later Washington Post investigation, published January 29, 2025, discussed a separate Path of Exile 2 controversy. The Post reported Musk saying he had “never claimed” full credit for progressing his characters and quoting him asking, “What would I be apologizing” for? That account concerns Path of Exile 2; it does not establish that anyone else played Musk’s Diablo IV account or invalidate the Pit run.

Blizzard’s official Diablo IV site lists the base game and expansions. It says Vessel of Hatred and Lord of Hatred require the base game, and that playing requires an internet connection and a Battle.net account. The site also describes shared progress across platforms.
