If you later regain access, you can generally continue on the same account when the game and platform support the save path. That is not a guarantee that every save will be retained indefinitely or transfer between every edition or storefront.
Does a Game Pass removal delete your save or achievements?
Microsoft’s Xbox Game Development Kit policy XR-052 says titles must associate “progress, saved state, preferences, achievements, and other rewards” with the user who recorded the progress or earned the rewards. A game leaving the catalog ends the subscription entitlement to play it; the policy does not say that a catalog removal deletes the player’s saved state or achievements.
That distinction does not amount to a promise that every game’s save will remain available forever. Microsoft’s policy and technical documentation do not specify a universal post-removal retention period, and a title’s save implementation and synchronization matter.
What you need to resume later
If you buy the game or otherwise regain access, use the same Xbox account that played it. Whether your progress resumes also depends on the game edition and the save path it supports. Microsoft’s requirements specify save roaming within Xbox console platforms and across Xbox console generations for titles using the same TitleID; they do not establish that every edition sold through every storefront shares a save.

How saves transfer between platforms

Why cloud saves may not appear immediately
Cloud storage and synchronization depend on how the game implements saving. Microsoft’s GDK documentation says title storage stores game-save data in the cloud and syncs it automatically when the user initiates Game Saves. That describes a supported sync behavior, not a guarantee that every game uses it or a stated retention period after a game leaves Game Pass. Microsoft GDK title storage documentation

What to check before returning to a game
- Sign in with the Xbox account that earned the achievements and recorded the save.
- Confirm you have access to the game again, either through a purchase or another entitlement.
- Check that the edition and platform support the save path you need; for Xbox-to-PC continuation, verify that the title supports Xbox Play Anywhere.
- If progress does not appear, check the game’s title-specific support information for its save and sync behavior.
