How Exactly Does the Hidden Blade Work in Assassin’s Creed?

The Hidden Blade is a spring-loaded, bracer-mounted knife in Assassin’s Creed lore, but its trigger and design change from Altaïr to later Assassins.

In Assassin’s Creed lore, the Hidden Blade is a spring-loaded knife attached to a forearm bracer. Its trigger and configuration change across the series: Altaïr deploys his blade with a ring and cord, while Ezio’s version uses a pressure switch and no longer requires a missing finger. Ubisoft describes fictional designs, not a tested real-world mechanism.

The basic fictional mechanism

Ubisoft describes the Hidden Blade as a spring-loaded knife secured to a leather or metal bracer and concealed beneath the forearm. In its familiar configuration, the blade slides forward from the bracer when activated. The details vary by character and game rather than following one universal design. Ubisoft’s 2024 design history traces those variations across the series.

How the mechanism differs by character

Character or version Activation or movement Mounting and other details
Altaïr A cord attached to a ring deploys the blade. The underside-mounted blade passes between the middle and little fingers of a clenched fist. The lore presents the missing ring finger as both a rite and a practical accommodation for the blade’s path.
Ezio A pressure switch replaces the ring-and-cord activation. The design does not require a finger to be removed. In the fiction, Ubisoft attributes the advance to knowledge Altaïr gained from the Apple of Eden.
Connor and Aveline The blade can pivot 90 degrees. The pivot lets it be held more like a regular knife.
Arno The Phantom Blade unfolds as a miniature wrist-mounted crossbow and launches the Hidden Blade as a projectile. It is a projectile-firing variant rather than simply a forward-sliding blade.
Darius and Eivor Ubisoft describes the blade design, but not a distinct activation method in the cited accounts. The device is mounted above the forearm.
Bayek A familiar forward-sliding mechanism. The franchise’s account connects Bayek’s version to the later tradition of the Hidden Blade.

Ezio’s bracer also becomes a platform for additional fictional weapons. Ubisoft associates later upgrades with a Hidden Gun, a poison blade, and a poison-dart launcher; these are add-ons, not descriptions of how every Hidden Blade works.

Why Altaïr’s version is associated with a missing finger

In the first game’s lore, the blade travels between two fingers when the hand closes, so the design is depicted as requiring space along its path. The missing left ring finger becomes a symbolic rite as well as a practical accommodation for that particular arrangement. Ezio’s pressure-switch design removes the requirement, so the finger sacrifice is not universal across the series.

What the origin story means—and what it does not

Ubisoft’s franchise chronology says Darius designed and used an above-wrist Hidden Blade against Xerxes I, and that Bayek later inherited the weapon. The weapon-history account connects Bayek’s finger injury in a botched assassination to the later tradition. These events belong to the series’ fictional timeline, not documented proof that the weapon existed in history. Ubisoft’s chronology gives the in-universe context.

Could it work in real life?

The official descriptions establish how the weapon is portrayed in the games, but they do not provide dimensions, tolerances, a complete trigger-and-return assembly, or real-world test results. They therefore do not establish that a device could reproduce the Hidden Blade’s operation as depicted. A decorative costume bracer is a different matter: Ubisoft’s Mirage cosplay guide is a costume-design reference, not a functional mechanism specification.

Hidden Metal Blade 1:1 Scale Prop Replica Retractable Halloween Accessory
  • Metal Blade + 3D Printed ABS Body (Hybrid Build) - The blade itself is solid metal with a realistic sheen; the housing is upgraded ABS, precision 3D printed for a clean fit. The result is a prop that has weight where it should and stays light enough for all-day wear.
  • True 1:1 Scale, 15.35 Inches Extended - Full length measures 15.35 in with the blade out (7.48 in blade section), matching the on-screen proportions fans expect. Intricate engravings and the gear-style base make it a display-shelf piece as much as a costume accessory - it looks the part up close.
  • Smooth Telescopic Action, Convention-Safe Profile - Slide or flick and the blade extends with one fluid motion, then retracts flush into a flat, full silhouette. The flat profile passes most convention prop checks - reviewers confirm wearing it all day without issues.
  • Adjustable Nylon Wrist Strap - Wrap the strap around your forearm and buckle it snug; it adjusts to fit most adult and teen arms. Ergonomic curve keeps the base seated on your forearm through cosplay shoots, stage performances and long convention days.
  • SAFETY NOTICE - Display & Cosplay Prop Only - This is NOT a functional weapon: the blade is blunt with no sharpened edges, for costume wear and display use only. Recommended for ages 14+.
