First check your league’s injury-slot rules and the fantasy platform’s current eligibility tag. If the player qualifies for IR or IR+, use the slot when it preserves roster flexibility; then add a temporary replacement based on likely role and usage, not name recognition. Reassess when status or line role changes, and make room before activating the star.
Check the status and the rules before making a move
Start with the latest team update, but separate a confirmed injury designation from an estimated return date. Injury reports can change, and a status listing is not a guarantee of when a player will return. Yahoo’s player-change overview is one place to check fantasy status; confirm the latest designation in your own platform and league.
NHL club Injured Reserve and a fantasy platform’s IR or IL slot are different systems. NHL operations guidelines say a player whose injury makes him unable to play for at least seven days can be placed on club IR, and a player placed there is ineligible for NHL games for at least seven days. The club’s medical staff makes that decision. Those NHL rules do not determine whether your fantasy league lets you use an injury slot.
Check the provider’s eligibility label and your league’s configuration. Yahoo’s fantasy hockey glossary describes IR eligibility for players placed on NHL IR and IR+ eligibility that can also cover day-to-day players. That glossary dates to 2016, so use it to understand the distinction, not as a substitute for checking current Yahoo settings and player eligibility.

Use an injury slot if it helps your roster
If the platform marks the player eligible and your league permits the move, an IR or IR+ slot can free an active roster spot while you hold the injured star. Whether that is worthwhile depends on what you can do with the freed spot and on the platform’s transaction rules.
- Confirm the player is eligible in the fantasy platform; an NHL team’s IR designation alone does not guarantee fantasy eligibility.
- Check whether your league has an IR or IR+ slot, how many are available, and any roster or transaction restrictions.
- Read the platform’s rules for adding players while a healthy player occupies an injury slot. ESPN’s waiver and roster help says an owner cannot add a player while a healthy player occupies an IR/IL slot; that is ESPN-specific, not a universal rule.
Choose a replacement for opportunity, not reputation
Look for a player whose role may improve while the star is out. A teammate promoted on the depth chart or given more minutes or power-play work may offer more relevant short-term value than a better-known player whose role has not changed. NHL.com’s glossary puts the strategy this way: “When a player is injured, you should always look at players who can move up on the depth chart to take on similar usage and fantasy production.” That is a selection principle, not a promise that a replacement will match the star’s output.

When comparing available players, weigh:
- Role and usage: Has the player moved into a more valuable line or special-teams role?
- Scoring fit: Does the player help the categories or scoring settings your league rewards?
- Absence outlook: Is the star’s return timing confirmed, or only estimated?
- Availability: Will the replacement actually be active during the scoring period you need?
- Roster flexibility: Can you make the add without blocking a more useful move or exceeding transaction limits?
These are league-specific comparisons. Without the player’s injury outlook, your scoring format, roster limits, waiver options, and current role news, there is no responsible universal keep, drop, or trade call.

When the star is close to playing, check the latest status, your league’s transaction timing and limits, and whether you have a legal open roster position. ESPN’s activation instructions require an empty roster spot to move a player out of IR/IL. Other platforms and leagues may handle activation differently, so follow your own settings.

- Confirm the player’s current fantasy eligibility and return status.
- Identify a roster spot that will be open when you activate him.
- Check whether the player must be moved to a bench or lineup spot and whether that move affects your ability to add anyone else.
- Make the activation in line with your league’s deadlines and transaction limits.
Revisit the replacement decision when meaningful injury, availability, or line-role news arrives. Do not keep a temporary add solely because you already made it; judge the player by current opportunity and your roster’s needs.
