It depends on the edition. In Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, the reported point-of-interest discovery range is about 16 blocks horizontally and 4 blocks vertically. That is a discovery range—not a guaranteed maximum distance between a villager and a bed it is already linked to. For Java Edition, the sources available here do not establish a current numeric bed-linking distance.
Bedrock: what the 16-by-4 range means
Mojang’s issue report for MCPE-189926 describes villagers linking to workstations within 16 blocks horizontally and 4 blocks vertically. The report concerns workstations, not beds specifically; beds are also treated as points of interest (POIs) in Bedrock mechanics references. So use 16 horizontal and 4 vertical as a practical guide to bed discovery, not as a bed-specific guarantee.
Horizontal and vertical distance are separate dimensions: a bed can be close in one direction but outside the reported range in the other. The report lists Bedrock 1.21.51 Hotfix, so behavior may depend on the version you are playing.
Why a villager can claim a farther bed
POI discovery is not always an individual villager finding a bed directly. Bedrock villagers can share POI information through the village. As a result, the villager that ends up linked to a bed may be farther away than the immediate discovery range suggests.

An existing POI link can also persist after a villager moves outside the linking radius. MCPE-189926 describes that persistence for a workstation; treat it as a caution about POI links, not proof that every bed link behaves identically. Moving a villager just beyond 16 horizontal or 4 vertical blocks may therefore not reset a link. Check which POIs villagers have claimed and test the setup in your game version.
Java Edition: no verified number here
Java and Bedrock villager mechanics differ. The reference material available for this answer does not verify a current numeric Java Edition bed-claiming range, so the Bedrock 16-by-4 figure should not be applied to Java. That evidence gap does not mean Java villagers have no limit; it means a reliable number cannot be stated here.

Bed range is not village size
A village boundary is a separate measurement from an individual villager’s POI discovery range. In Bedrock, the village can begin around the first claimed bed and expand as POIs are added or removed. The boundary therefore does not tell you how far one villager can detect or claim a particular bed.

If villagers appear not to respond while you troubleshoot, also consider whether their area is being simulated. Microsoft’s Bedrock simulation-distance documentation explains that simulation distance controls which game mechanics run in ticks; it does not establish a bed-linking radius. This is relevant to whether mechanics are active, not a substitute for measuring POI distance.
