What kind of game is How Fish Is Made?
The official Steam description calls it “a short narrative-driven experience about talking to fish and making choices.” You play as a sardine inside a machine, meet other fish, and encounter a “prophetic choice” framed as “UP or DOWN?” The game asks whether you will help the others or mislead them; its official synopsis leaves the meaning of that choice open. The setting is described as wet and squalid, and the tone is surreal and existential. It is not presented as fish education or a simulation. Steam lists Wrong Organ, Johanna Kasurinen, Jeffrey Tomec, and Martin Halldin as developers, with CRITICAL REFLEX as publisher.
What is included?
The free base game centers on conversations and choices. The store listing also includes the free expansion The Last One and Then Another, described as a katamari-like experience: you absorb fleshy bits and fish to grow massive. Is How Fish Is Made free, and when did it come out?
Steam lists How Fish Is Made as free to play, with a release date of January 14, 2022. The developers reported reaching 85,000 sales on November 14, 2022; that is a dated milestone, not a current sales total. The announcement archive also records a language update dated December 26, 2024, and a sound hotfix dated December 28, 2024.

The developer-provided mature-content description warns of graphic fish violence, trypophobia-inducing imagery, disturbing subject matter, and sexual content.
