Its leaderboard shows who set the fastest recorded lap in that session, but it does not by itself predict qualifying or Grand Prix order.
What is FP1 in Formula 1?
FP1 is the first scheduled practice session of a Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend. Teams use the track time to confirm that the car is working, help drivers learn the circuit, gather feedback and start adjusting the setup. They may also use practice to evaluate new aerodynamic parts.
Practice results are not race classifications or championship points. The session order is based on recorded lap times, not a race to the finish.
How many practice sessions are there?
Standard Grand Prix weekend
Usually, Friday has FP1 and FP2, each scheduled for one hour. Saturday begins with FP3, also one hour, followed by qualifying later in the day. Formula 1 describes FP3 as the last practice before parc fermé conditions begin, when most work on the car is banned. The exact scope and timing of those restrictions are not detailed here.

Sprint weekend
A Sprint weekend usually has one practice session before Sprint Qualifying, rather than three practice sessions. Formula 1’s beginner’s guide describes that session as one hour, but the schedule can change for a specific event: the sole FP1 at the 2026 Miami Sprint weekend was extended to 90 minutes.
What do teams typically do in each session?
Teams decide their own programs, so these are common priorities, not mandatory session-by-session tasks.

- Perfect for Collectors & Kids – Great gift for automotive fans
- FP1: Check the car, build circuit familiarity, collect driver feedback and begin setup work. Teams sometimes assess new aerodynamic parts.
- FP2: Often features longer runs to prepare for the race; teams may also attempt qualifying simulations when conditions allow.
- FP3: Often shifts toward shorter runs as drivers prepare for qualifying.
The weekend format and conditions influence what teams prioritize. Formula 1 cautions: “Cars carry different fuel loads and drivers use different tyre compounds in varying conditions over the three practice sessions, so it’s not always easy to determine who’s going to be fast solely by using practice times.”
What does an FP1 leaderboard tell you?
An official result page typically shows each driver’s session position, team, lap time or gap, and completed laps. For example, Formula 1’s 2026 Bahrain FP1 results list drivers by recorded session time and include lap counts. These details establish who set the quickest listed lap and offer a basic sense of how much each driver ran.

They do not disclose the full run plan or all the conditions behind the laps. A driver can finish high in the order without having demonstrated a matching advantage in qualifying conditions.
Read position, gap and laps together
- Position tells you where the driver’s fastest recorded lap ranked in that session.
- Time or gap shows the difference between listed laps, but not why that difference occurred.
- Lap count provides context about how much each driver ran. Different counts can indicate unequal track time, but do not explain the reason or the quality of a run.
Why FP1 times can mislead
Teams may use different fuel loads, tyre compounds and run plans, while track conditions can change during a session. Drivers may also be working on different tasks. Because the public classification does not provide all this context, comparing session positions alone is not a reliable way to identify the quickest car for qualifying or the race.

For a more meaningful comparison, look for matching tyre, fuel, conditions and run purpose. If those details are unknown, treat a small time gap or a top position as an observation about that session, not a clean measure of underlying pace.

Use FP1 as an early signal: it can show who has set a quick lap and who has completed substantial running, but it cannot establish a dependable qualifying or race order on its own. Later practice and qualifying provide more evidence; judge any conclusion in light of the conditions and programs behind the times.
