Within hours of AI Darth Vader’s May 16, 2025 debut in Fortnite: Galactic Battle, players found prompts that could make him produce profanity and other offensive language. Epic said it hotfixed a failure, but the episode exposed how safeguards on a live conversational character could be probed—and raised a separate labor dispute over AI voice work.
What happened when players talked to AI Darth Vader?
Epic and Disney introduced the feature on May 16, 2025, as part of Fortnite: Galactic Battle. Players could recruit Darth Vader as an in-game boss and use a special interaction prompt to speak with him. The character answered conversationally, with generated speech in the voice associated with the late James Earl Jones. The official announcement suggested asking about Star Wars lore or gameplay strategy. StarWars.com’s launch announcement said Jones’s estate had enabled the collaboration.
Within hours, players posted clips showing that prompts could steer Vader into profanity and other inappropriate responses. WIRED described one exchange in which streamer Loserfruit asked about food and Vader objected to vulgar wording in the prompt. In another reported clip, a conversation about carcinogens and cigarettes preceded a homophobic slur. These were reported examples, not evidence of how often the system produced such responses; the slur is not repeated here. WIRED’s May 16 report covered the clips and Epic’s response.
How did the prompts get past the safeguards?
The reported clips suggest users were deliberately probing the character’s instructions and found prompt-and-context combinations that passed the filters. That is different from establishing that the model produced offensive language with no prompting. The available reporting does not provide enough detail to reconstruct the exact prompts or identify a single technical cause.

WIRED reported that the dialogue model was Google Gemini 2.0 and the speech model was ElevenLabs Flash v2.5. Those were components in the reported feature setup; the reporting does not identify either vendor as the author of Epic’s moderation rules.
What did Epic say it changed?
Epic spokesperson Cat McCormack told WIRED that the company pushed a hotfix within 30 minutes of the incident it addressed. Epic’s Fortnite account also said it had hotfixed the response associated with the carcinogen prompt. McCormack said, “When this happens, we make adjustments to avoid similar responses in the future.” The timing and changes are Epic’s account, not an independent audit of the fix.
Epic described several layers of protection beyond the underlying model’s settings:
- Additional instructions and safety settings, including rules against swearing and repeating swear words.
- Tools for players to report inappropriate responses.
- AI-specific parental controls.
- A session-level consequence for repeated attempts to break the rules: Vader would leave the squad and could not be recruited again during that gameplay session.
These measures are company descriptions. The clips show that safeguards did not prevent every reported failure at launch; they do not establish how reliably the hotfix or other measures worked afterward.

What were the voice and data policies at launch?
Disney said voice audio was securely processed to generate responses, but that conversation audio and transcripts were not stored. Nintendo Life relayed Epic’s statement that interactions would not be used to train AI models. These are launch-period company statements, not independently audited findings or confirmation of the feature’s current data policy. Why did SAG-AFTRA file a complaint?
On May 19, 2025—three days after the feature launched—SAG-AFTRA filed an unfair labor practice charge against Llama Productions, an Epic subsidiary and a Fortnite signatory. The union alleged the company made changes involving AI-generated voices that replaced bargaining-unit work without notice or an opportunity to bargain. The filing was an allegation, not a ruling that Epic or the subsidiary violated labor law.
The union’s position is distinct from the Jones estate’s authorization of the collaboration. The estate’s involvement addressed permission to use the voice associated with Jones; SAG-AFTRA’s charge concerned the union’s claimed right to bargain over work and working conditions. As Ars Technica reported, the union said it supported members’ and estates’ control over digital replicas while seeking to protect its bargaining rights around voice work. Can you still talk to AI Darth Vader in Fortnite?
The official announcement placed the feature in Fortnite: Galactic Battle beginning May 16, 2025, and Shacknews described it as lasting for that season. The sources documenting the launch do not establish whether conversational AI Darth Vader is available on October 8, 2026, so the launch instructions should not be taken as confirmation that players can still access him.
