How Fyreslayers Play in Age of Sigmar: Magmadroths, Runes and Battle Tactics

Fyreslayers are a close-range objective army built around one-rune-per-round timing, hard charges and Magmadroth mobility. Here is how their runes, seasonal abilities, formations and battle tactics fit together.

Fyreslayers are a close-range, objective-focused duardin army that wins by choosing the right moment for short-lived advantages. Their five UR-GOLD RUNE abilities can deliver a ward, movement, improved attacks, anti-charge pressure or stronger thrown axes, but only one rune can be used in a battle round. Magmadroth-mounted heroes add monster-scale movement, durability and damage, while the current Scourge of Aqshy season adds a fury-driven decision to the Auric Runeson on Magmadroth.

The result is an army about timing rather than automatic buffs. You must decide whether the next priority is surviving a counterattack, reaching an objective, exploiting a charge, finishing a target or scoring a secondary objective. Battle tactics and points change with each battlepack, so use the current seasonal documents when turning these principles into a list.

How do Fyreslayers play?

Fyreslayers prefer to fight at close range and contest the central objectives with compact, hard-hitting units. They are not a faction built around constant long-range firepower. Instead, they combine durable duardin bodies, priestly support, carefully timed rune effects and, in many armies, one or more Magmadroths that can cross the table and threaten a key target.

The army’s power is deliberately restricted by timing windows. Each UR-GOLD RUNE is usable once per battle, and only one rune may be used in a battle round. Spending the right effect one round early can leave the army without the defensive or movement tool needed for the decisive turn. A good Fyreslayer player therefore plans a turn ahead: identify the objective that must be held, the enemy unit that must be removed and the counterattack that is most likely to follow.

What are Fyreslayers in the lore?

Fyreslayers are a martial duardin warrior-cult organised into lodges. Runefathers and Fyrequeens lead those lodges, while the Zharrgrim priesthood assesses and smelts sacred ur-gold, forges it into runes and oversees death rites. The runes are embedded into Fyreslayers’ flesh, so the faction’s battlefield mechanics express a central part of its identity: divine power is carried in the body and released in moments of need.

Fyreslayers pursue the legacy of Grimnir. Their lodges are therefore both military organisations and religious communities. That helps explain why a small force can have a strong internal hierarchy: ordinary warriors, priests and mounted heroes each represent a different part of the same cult rather than unrelated unit types.

Magmadroths are equally important to the faction’s story. Lodge hatcheries raise these fire-breathing, armoured descendants of the Ur-Drake. They are proud, dangerous creatures that are difficult to tame, and a hero mounted on one is a symbol of status as well as a battlefield threat. On the table, the mount’s size and mobility let a Fyreslayer army project force beyond the reach of its infantry line.

Rune Battlefield purpose Typical timing question
Rune of Fury Lets Fyreslayers respond to charging enemies before those enemies fight. Will acting immediately blunt an enemy charge, or is the charge harmless enough to accept?
Fiery Determination Provides a 5+ ward, improving the chance that a key unit survives incoming damage. Is the unit about to absorb attacks that would otherwise remove it from an objective?
Relentless Zeal Improves movement toward combat and objectives. Does an extra move create a charge, secure a scoring position or deny the opponent an objective?
Searing Heat Improves the army’s combat damage for a critical engagement. Can the boosted attacks destroy a unit, cripple a monster or swing an objective?
Farsight Enhances thrown-axe attacks, giving the army a short-ranged pressure option. Can axes finish a damaged unit or force an enemy to retreat before the main combat?

Because only one rune can be used in a battle round, these effects are not a menu of simultaneous bonuses. Treat the restriction as an opportunity cost. If the opponent is about to charge your objective holder, Fiery Determination may be worth more than Searing Heat. If the enemy is already damaged and a small amount of ranged pressure will remove it, Farsight can protect the following charge. The strongest choice is the one that changes the next objective or combat, not necessarily the one that produces the largest number of attacks.

How should you choose a battle formation?

Battle formations should reinforce what your list is already trying to do. Do not select one because Fyreslayers are stereotyped as a Magmadroth army; infantry-led lists can be equally coherent.

Warrior Kinband

Warrior Kinband rewards infantry that charged in the same turn with +1 to wound rolls. It suits a plan built around staging behind cover, then committing several foot units together. The benefit is strongest when the charge both wins an objective and produces enough damage to remove the opposing unit. It is less valuable if your infantry are mostly standing still or if Magmadroths perform the army’s important charges.

Magmadroth-focused options

Other listed formations support tougher Magmadroths. Choose this direction when mounted heroes are expected to absorb attacks, hold a flank or force the opponent to screen multiple approach lanes. Their value depends on the number of Magmadroths in the army and on whether the battleplan rewards a fast, durable monster contesting an objective.

Hero-control options

Some formations improve a hero’s ability to control objectives. They are useful when a mounted or foot hero must remain on a scoring point after the surrounding infantry have been weakened. Check the current wording for the exact control benefit and unit eligibility.

Defensive-barrier options

A defensive formation that helps in friendly territory supports a counterpunch plan: establish a safe home position, make the opponent cross the table and then commit the rune or charge that wins the centre. This approach is less aggressive than Warrior Kinband, but it can be better on battleplans where protecting a home objective is worth more than an early attack.

Are Magmadroths good in Age of Sigmar?

Magmadroths are good when your army needs mobility, a monster threat and a durable platform for a hero’s abilities. They can threaten an objective several inches away from the infantry block, force the opponent to screen vulnerable units and create difficult target-priority decisions. They are not automatically correct in every list: a large mount can be expensive in points, physically awkward in dense terrain and vulnerable if sent forward without support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use a Magmadroth to: pressure a flank, contest a distant objective, force screens, or deliver a hero into a decisive combat.
  • Keep support nearby when: the opponent has strong anti-monster attacks or can surround the mount with cheap units.
  • Avoid overextending when: the mount’s charge would win a fight but leave the rest of the army unable to score or protect the following turn.
  • Remember the model’s footprint: movement and charge lanes can be blocked by terrain and friendly units, so plan the approach before the movement phase.

How does Seeing Red work in Scourge of Aqshy?

In the Scourge of Aqshy season, the Auric Runeson on Magmadroth has the fury-linked Seeing Red ability. The seasonal article dated 30 June 2026 describes it as a once-per-turn choice in any combat phase.

  1. Spend one rage die.
  2. If the opponent’s fury level is lower, increase that opponent’s fury level by one, up to seven.
  3. Choose one benefit for the unit for the rest of the turn: add one attack to its Companion melee weapons; roll a number of dice equal to the player’s fury level and heal one wound for each 4+; or give the unit a 5+ ward.

The choice should follow the combat’s purpose. Extra Companion attacks are the aggressive option when the Runeson can remove a target or take an objective. Healing is valuable after the mount has already suffered damage and must remain in play for another turn. The 5+ ward is the safer choice when the opponent’s return attacks are more dangerous than the damage you expect to inflict. Seeing Red belongs to the Scourge of Aqshy rules environment; it should not be treated as a permanent replacement for the core Fyreslayer rules.

The same season adds Marks of Vulcatrix enhancements and a new Vulkyn Gifts prayer lore. These rules interact with fury and rage dice, so read the complete seasonal section before combining them with a list. Their presence does not change the fundamental Fyreslayer plan: create a high-value combat window, then spend the resource that makes that window decisive.

Foot heroes or Magmadroth heroes?

Compare the two choices by role rather than by a universal ranking. A foot hero is easier to hide, usually fits more formations and can remain close to infantry units. A Magmadroth hero brings mobility, a monster profile and the ability to threaten objectives outside the infantry line, but it also concentrates points and can become the opponent’s preferred target.

Comparison Foot hero Magmadroth-mounted hero
Mobility Works best inside the infantry advance and around terrain. Can cross the table quickly and pressure distant objectives.
Threat profile Supports a battleline plan and is easier to screen. Creates monster pressure and demands dedicated answers.
Defensive planning Can use infantry and terrain as protection. May access mount-specific defensive effects, but has a larger footprint.
Points Use the current season’s battle profiles. Use the current season’s battle profiles; historical values are not safe for a 2026 list.

A September 2025 battle-profiles document listed the Auric Runefather on Magmadroth at 320 points, the Auric Runesmiter on Magmadroth at 280 points and the Auric Runeson on Magmadroth at 250 points. Those figures are historical reference values only. The 2026 seasonal material states that points have changed, but the current Fyreslayer table is not established here, so check the latest official battle profiles before submitting an army.

How do battle tactics score points?

Battle tactics are secondary objectives that award points in addition to the battleplan’s main objective scoring. They should influence deployment and movement from the start of the turn, not be chosen after the army has already committed.

An official 2024–25 explainer described tactics as being selected at the start of a turn and awarding four victory points when completed. It also explained that a player who won priority and chose a second consecutive turn could not select a tactic on that turn, creating a scoring cost for the double turn. Those details are dated and may not apply unchanged in Scourge of Aqshy. Read the current battlepack for the tactic list, point value and any restriction on consecutive turns.

Practical tactic planning

  • Choose a tactic whose condition matches a move you already need to make, such as charging an exposed unit or holding an objective.
  • Do not spend a once-per-battle rune merely to satisfy a tactic unless the effect also improves the combat or scoring position.
  • Keep one mobile unit or Magmadroth available for a tactic that requires reaching a particular zone.
  • Check whether the tactic can still be scored after a priority change; a plan that depends on taking two turns in a row may carry a deliberate scoring trade-off.

A sample Fyreslayer turn

  1. Read the battle state: identify which objective is worth the most and which enemy unit can remove your current holder.
  2. Choose the secondary objective: select a current battle tactic that aligns with the required movement or charge.
  3. Stage units: move infantry so they can support one another, while leaving a clear lane for a Magmadroth if a mounted hero must commit.
  4. Spend the rune: use Relentless Zeal for the charge distance, Fiery Determination for expected incoming damage, or Searing Heat when the combat result will determine the objective.
  5. Resolve the key combat: if the Auric Runeson is present, decide whether Seeing Red’s attacks, healing or ward best serves the rest of the turn.
  6. Consolidate for the response: finish within scoring range, screen a damaged hero and avoid leaving the rest of the army unable to answer the opponent’s next move.

Common mistakes and fixes

Using a rune on the first available target

Problem: an early minor combat consumes the only rune that could have protected the central objective. Fix: ask whether the effect changes a score, a charge or a unit’s survival before spending it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sending a Magmadroth ahead alone

Problem: the mount reaches an enemy but is surrounded or destroyed before the infantry can exploit the opening. Fix: advance it far enough to threaten, but preserve a support route and a retreat or consolidation option.

Treating historical points as current

Problem: a list built from September 2025 costs is illegal or mis-sized in the 2026 season. Fix: verify the latest battle profiles and battlepack immediately before writing the list.

Ignoring the scoring cost of a double turn

Problem: taking a second consecutive turn wins a combat but forfeits an available tactic under the applicable rules. Fix: compare the immediate damage and objective swing with the points you give up, using the current season’s wording.

What to check before playing Scourge of Aqshy

  • Download the current Fyreslayer faction rules and battle profiles.
  • Confirm the Scourge of Aqshy battlepack’s battle tactics, scoring values and priority rules.
  • Check the exact wording of all five UR-GOLD RUNE abilities; the faction focus descriptions are strategic summaries.
  • Verify rage-die and fury-level interactions before using Seeing Red.
  • Confirm points for every hero, unit and enhancement rather than relying on September 2025 profiles.
  • Choose a formation whose trigger matches the units you actually plan to charge, protect or place on objectives.
