How Game of the Year Eligibility Rules Work Across Major Awards

GOTY eligibility varies by award: compare each cycle’s release window, market, release-type rules, submission conditions and voting process.

There is no universal Game of the Year eligibility rule. Each award sets its own release window, market, entry requirements and voting process, so a game can qualify for one ceremony but miss another. Check the named award’s rules for the specific cycle—not just the game’s original release date.

How does a game qualify for Game of the Year?

Eligibility is determined by the rules of a particular award and cycle. The key questions are whether the game was publicly available in the specified territory during the award’s release window, whether that type of release is allowed, and whether the entry meets any submission conditions. A ceremony held in one year may recognize games released in a different period.

Release eligibility is also distinct from a submission deadline, nomination timetable and ceremony date. For instance, the 2027 Game Developers Choice Awards site gives a 1 November 2026 submission deadline and a 2 March 2027 ceremony date; those dates do not replace its release-year eligibility rule.

What is the cutoff date for major Game of the Year awards?

The windows below apply to the named cycle and category. They are not interchangeable industry-wide cutoffs.

Game Developers Choice Awards 2027 Game of the Year is open to games released during the previous calendar year. The 2027 site says submissions are open to all games with no submission fee. Confirm detailed exceptions against that cycle’s rules. Categories and official site.
Japan Game Awards: Games of the Year Japan release from 1 June 2025 through 31 May 2026. Works released outside the period may be considered if they became notable topics during the year; this is not an automatic waiver. Overview and rules.

Why do territory and public availability matter?

A release date by itself may not establish eligibility. BAFTA’s 2027 rules refer to release in the UK, Japan Game Awards specifies release in Japan, and D.I.C.E.’s 30th annual rules generally require public availability in North America. A game launched earlier in one country could therefore fall within a later award’s local release window—or outside another’s.

The wording about availability matters, too: D.I.C.E. and GDCA specify public availability to consumers. Do not assume a private preview, announcement, or unreleased build meets a public-release requirement.

Can a game win GOTY if it came out late in the year?

Yes, if it was available by the relevant award’s cutoff and met its other rules. But the answer depends on the award and cycle. A game released after The Game Awards’ stated 21 November 2025 cutoff was directed to the 2026 ceremony; that FAQ result does not establish the 2026 cutoff. BAFTA’s 2027 window ends on 19 November 2026, while D.I.C.E.’s 30th annual window runs through 31 December 2026.

For Japan Game Awards, the cited period crosses calendar years and ends on 31 May 2026. Its rules also permit consideration of notable works outside that window, at the selection committee’s discretion.

Do early access games, DLC, remakes and remasters qualify?

A title’s format and relationship to an earlier release can change the answer, even when its date and territory fit.

Early access

BAFTA generally excludes early access games, though an entrant may appeal. That possibility is not blanket eligibility; the Games Committee is the final arbiter of category eligibility.

DLC, expansions and upgrades

BAFTA does not treat DLC as a new standalone game, though specified craft or performance categories may accept it if it demonstrates the required originality. GDCA’s 2026 rules exclude upgrades, expansions and mission packs.

Remakes, remasters and ports

BAFTA generally bars remakes from Best Game and British Game; craft and performance categories may accept them where significant originality is demonstrated. Its remaster exception applies only when the original predates the first BAFTA Games Awards. D.I.C.E. may accept remakes with demonstrable changes to technical, gameplay or art assets, but excludes remasters or ports without significant changes to the core experience.

Previously entered and ongoing games

BAFTA generally does not allow previously entered games to be entered again, except in Evolving Game. That category has its own voting arrangements, so do not assume its treatment matches Best Game.

Do entrants need to submit a game or meet other conditions?

Release eligibility and entry mechanics are separate. D.I.C.E.’s 30th annual rules generally require the submitting publisher to be an AIAS member in good standing; non-member companies may submit only in craft categories. Japan Game Awards allows non-CESA members to enter, and Japanese versions of foreign titles qualify.

GDCA’s 2027 site says submissions are open to all games and there is no submission fee. Because the site also says the awards are moving to a submission-based process, confirm the detailed current-cycle eligibility rules rather than carrying forward every exception from the 2026 rules.

Who nominates and chooses the winner?

Eligibility does not tell you who decides the nominees or winner. The electorate and process vary by award, and a public role in one award does not imply a public vote in another.

BAFTA Games Awards

BAFTA reported approximately 1,700 experienced games-industry professional members in its 2027 announcement. Members vote in the first round; members determine nominees and winners in Best Game, British Game and Evolving Game. In other categories, juries of nine to twelve industry experts consider longlists. BAFTA says Evolving Game is open to member voting across all rounds. The membership figure describes the organization, not the number of voters in each round.

The Game Awards

The official FAQ result describes nominations for most categories as chosen by an international jury of more than 100 media and influencer outlets. For the 2025 cycle, it describes a winner split of 90% jury vote and 10% public vote. Those figures are specific to the surfaced 2025-cycle information; they do not establish the 2026 cutoff or confirm that the voting split remains unchanged.

D.I.C.E. Awards

For Game of the Year, peer-panel leaders and panelists first select five finalists, then eligible Academy members vote. The rules describe active Creative/Technical, Business and Affiliate members as eligible. Members rank up to three nominees, and an instant-runoff tally continues until a title reaches a majority. Peer panels narrow submissions to no more than five finalists per category.

Game Developers Choice Awards

The 2026 rules describe an invitation-only International Choice Awards Network (ICAN) of game creators making nominations and selecting winners, alongside a separate public Audience Award. For 2027, the site says Game of the Year nominations are made by ICAN. The Audience Award is a distinct category, not evidence that the public selects the overall Game of the Year.

Japan Game Awards

General voting is a reference for the selection committee, which decides the winners. The committee evaluates design, programming, graphics, sound, scenario and user evaluation; general votes and sales volumes can inform its deliberation. Public votes therefore do not automatically determine the Games of the Year winner.

Why is a game eligible for one GOTY award but not another?

A game can meet one award’s criteria and miss another because the rules differ on the market of release, the start and end dates, the kinds of releases accepted, submission conditions and the decision process. For example, a Japan release within Japan Game Awards’ June-to-May window is not automatically a qualifying UK release for BAFTA or a qualifying North American release for D.I.C.E.

Category rules can diverge within the same ceremony as well. BAFTA has different treatment for Best Game, British Game, Evolving Game and craft or performance categories; D.I.C.E. identifies exceptions for two categories. Check the relevant category instead of relying on a general description of the awards.

How to check a specific game’s eligibility

  1. Name the award, category and cycle. “GOTY eligible” is incomplete without all three.
  2. Check the official release window and territory. Confirm when the game became publicly available in the required market, not only its first release anywhere.
  3. Check the release type. Look for rules on early access, DLC, expansions, remakes, remasters, ports and previously entered titles.
  4. Check entry conditions separately. Verify who can submit, whether a submission is required, and any membership or category restrictions.
  5. Check the voting route. Establish whether members, juries, a committee or public voters nominate and select the winner—and whether any public vote is a separate award.
  6. Use the current cycle’s official rules. BAFTA reviews its criteria annually, and prior-cycle deadlines or voting details should not be presumed to carry forward.
