Gaming attack data can help defenders elsewhere by revealing reusable patterns in denial-of-service (DDoS) traffic, testing how well detection separates attacks from legitimate demand, and improving coordination between detection and mitigation. Online games are a useful proving ground because disruption is immediately visible and many games rely on UDP—but the available evidence supports plausible transfer of methods, not a measured, causal reduction in losses for other industries.
What gaming DDoS data can teach defenders
The useful lesson is not simply that games attract attacks. It is that well-labeled observations can help teams ask operational questions that apply to many internet-facing services: what was targeted, how traffic behaved, which signals distinguished malicious activity from real users, and how quickly a response restored service.
Characterize attacks instead of counting them alone
A useful record can capture the protocol and target, attack vector, bandwidth, packet rate, duration, whether the event used one or several vectors, and its observed class. That context helps defenders compare incidents, estimate severity and risk, and choose detection or mitigation strategies. Counts without consistent definitions and context are harder to act on.
A 2020 ISACA Journal study by Kalpit Sharma and Arunabha Mukhopadhyay examined 10,329 records of gaming DDoS activity from 2012–2018. The dataset covered seven attack types and five overlapping classes, with start and end timestamps, bits per second, packets per second, and detected attack class. The authors describe using attack history to estimate the risk of missed detection, assess severity, and guide mitigation. Read the study in ISACA Journal.

Measure detection quality by attack class
A single accuracy score can conceal where a detector fails. In the study’s initial classifier run, the authors reported 99% correct classification for class B but 43% for class E, alongside false positives and false negatives. Those results are specific to that dataset and run; they do not establish general performance for other networks or systems. Defenders evaluating a model should examine missed attacks and false alarms for each relevant class, not rely on one headline percentage.
Why gaming traffic makes mitigation difficult
Gaming services often need to stay responsive while handling legitimate player traffic that shares protocols or infrastructure with malicious traffic. AWS noted that many games rely on UDP, which makes a blanket “block UDP” response impractical: it can cut off legitimate play along with an attack. Defenders need traffic-aware detection and filtering that preserve necessary service behavior.

AWS reported that 16% of infrastructure-layer events detected by AWS Shield in 2020 targeted gaming applications, and that the frequency of events detected on behalf of gaming applications rose 46% between Q1 and Q2 of that year. These are AWS Shield observations for 2020, not current or universal estimates of gaming’s share of DDoS attacks. See AWS’s 2020 threat landscape review.
How telemetry helps turn observations into action
Attack data becomes more operationally useful when detection systems and mitigators can exchange relevant information through agreed interfaces. Telemetry can help a mitigation component select a suitable response and coordinate with other components, rather than leaving each tool to act on an incomplete view.

What cross-industry examples do—and do not—show
DDoS against a game server is not identical to DDoS against a bank, government portal, streaming service, or cloud platform. Application behavior, critical assets, and consequences differ. The shared defensive questions—detect malicious traffic, distinguish it from legitimate demand, coordinate service-level and upstream responses, and restore availability—make some techniques transferable, but each sector still needs its own service context and impact measures.
Microsoft’s review of its 2022 observations recorded an average of 1,435 attacks per day and more than 520,000 unique attacks against Microsoft global infrastructure during the year; 89% of the attacks it observed lasted less than an hour. The report also records attacks on game services including Among Us and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. These figures describe Microsoft’s visibility and definitions, not the entire internet. Short events also make response speed a practical concern: a signal that arrives too late may have little value for an attack that has already ended. Read Microsoft’s 2022 review.

Mandiant’s 2019 account of APT41 describes the group targeting gaming, healthcare, high technology, higher education, telecommunications, and travel. It also describes incident-response intelligence feeding detection work. This is evidence of cross-sector targeting and an intelligence-feedback process, not evidence that gaming DDoS telemetry directly improved a named industry’s defenses. Read Mandiant’s APT41 account.
How to interpret large-attack reports
Provider reporting can illustrate the scale of observed attacks and the role of network-level mitigation, but its measurements describe the reporting provider’s own visibility. Arelion’s July 2026 report, for example, says its 2025–2026 observations showed average attack volume rising 22% to 6,120 Gbps while average duration fell 20% to 8.9 minutes. Arelion also reported that the Aisuru botnet accounted for approximately 33% of DDoS attack traffic on its network and that a recorded attack reached 31.4 Tbps in December 2025. These are Arelion-reported network measurements, not independent global estimates. The report describes network-level mitigation protecting a gaming platform during very large attacks; that account is attributed to the provider, not an independent evaluation. Read Arelion’s report.
Mattias Fridström, Arelion’s Vice President and Chief Evangelist, said in the July 2026 announcement: “Attacks are happening at scale, so service providers and enterprises must defend at scale.” That is a vendor spokesperson’s view, not a measured finding about outcomes across industries.
What the evidence supports
Gaming environments can help defenders develop and refine reusable methods for classifying DDoS activity, evaluating detection errors, preserving legitimate traffic, and coordinating mitigation through telemetry. Attacks and tactics can span sectors, while individual providers see only the traffic available to their networks. The cited evidence does not establish through a controlled study that gaming-derived data or models have reduced losses in banking, healthcare, or another industry. The defensible conclusion is narrower: gaming can be a proving ground for defensive learning, and transfer depends on adapting what is learned to each service’s traffic and operational requirements.
