Valve’s SteamOS expansion has moved beyond a tease, but official status remains limited. Valve named Lenovo’s Legion Go S the first non-Deck handheld officially licensed to ship with SteamOS in January 2025. Its current device list names Steam Deck, Steam Machine and Legion Go S as officially “Powered by SteamOS,” while newer updates improve compatibility with other AMD PCs. Lenovo has also announced a second-generation Legion Go with SteamOS, but that announcement and Valve’s testing references do not by themselves add it to Valve’s official list.
What Valve announced—and what has changed since
On January 7, 2025, Valve announced that Lenovo’s Legion Go S would be the first handheld other than Steam Deck officially licensed to ship with SteamOS. Valve said it was updating the operating system to support that device and that the same work would improve compatibility with other handhelds. Valve also said users would be able to download and test a beta intended to improve the experience on other handhelds. Valve’s announcement framed the Go S as the start of an expansion, not a declaration that every PC handheld could run SteamOS equally well.
By September 30, 2026, Valve said recent Steam and SteamOS 3.8 updates had improved compatibility with other AMD-powered PCs, including handhelds and desktops. That is a broader software-compatibility claim, distinct from Valve’s official “Powered by SteamOS” device designation. Valve’s current SteamOS page lists Steam Deck, Steam Machine and Legion Go S under that designation.
Official SteamOS hardware versus compatible PCs
“Officially Powered by SteamOS” describes hardware Valve lists as an official device; it should not be treated as a synonym for “can run SteamOS” or “is being tested.” Valve says it works with select partners on licensed devices. The current list is narrower than the set of AMD PCs that may benefit from compatibility updates.

- Officially listed: Steam Deck, Steam Machine and Legion Go S, according to Valve’s current SteamOS page.

- Testing: A Valve GDC 2026 slide names Legion Go S, Legion Go 2 and “other devices people are testing and building themselves” in a SteamOS verification-testing context. Testing is not the same as a completed certification or official listing.
What about the Legion Go 2 SteamOS model?
Lenovo announced the Legion Go, Powered by SteamOS (8.8-inch, second generation) on January 6, 2026. Lenovo’s announcement described an 8.8-inch WUXGA OLED display, up to an AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor, up to 32 GB of LPDDR5X memory, up to 2 TB of SSD storage and a 74 Wh battery. These are Lenovo’s announced specifications, not independent performance results.
Lenovo estimated a $1,199 USD starting price and June 2026 availability in that announcement. Those figures are announcement-era estimates, not confirmation of a current price or stock. Valve’s GDC testing reference to Legion Go 2 adds evidence that the device has been part of SteamOS verification work, but Valve’s current official device list still names the Legion Go S rather than the Go 2. Lenovo’s announcement is the source for the Go 2 specifications and estimates.

What the Legion Go S announcement established
Lenovo’s 2025 announcement put the Legion Go S SteamOS model at an expected $499.99 USD starting price, with expected availability in May 2025. Those were Lenovo’s estimates at announcement, not current retail pricing or availability. Valve’s January 2025 statement called it the first officially licensed handheld to ship with SteamOS. Lenovo’s announcement documents the model and those launch-era estimates.
Can you install SteamOS on a ROG Ally or another handheld?
Valve’s current compatibility statement supports saying that some other AMD-powered PCs may work better with recent SteamOS updates. It does not establish that every ROG Ally, Legion Go configuration or other handheld has complete hardware support, the same experience as Steam Deck, or official Powered by SteamOS status. Check Valve’s current compatibility information for the particular hardware and software version before relying on a device for daily use.

Valve says the operating system’s base components are open source, but the Steam Client is proprietary, and official Powered by SteamOS branding and device licensing have separate requirements. Open-source components therefore do not mean that any manufacturer or user can make a device an officially licensed SteamOS product.
What SteamOS offers—and its compatibility limits
Valve describes SteamOS as Linux-based and designed for controller-first gaming while retaining PC flexibility. Its announcement highlights quick suspend and resume, system and game updates, access to the Steam Library and Steam Cloud, and Proton, which lets many Windows games run on Linux. Users can also switch to desktop mode to install other launchers or software. The balance is a console-like gaming interface with an accessible desktop, rather than a promise that all PC software behaves identically to Windows.

Game support is broad but not universal. Valve says the “vast majority” of the Steam library runs through Proton; its Verified program flags games that do not work well on SteamOS. Valve’s current page says it counted over 18,000 titles as playable or verified “last we checked.” That is Valve’s count, with no date stated on the page, not a live guarantee for every game or device. Check a specific game’s Steam Deck compatibility details before buying for it.

Valve’s direction is clearer than the January 2025 headline alone suggests: SteamOS support is expanding beyond Steam Deck through official partner hardware and improvements for other AMD PCs. The distinction that matters when choosing a handheld is whether SteamOS is officially preinstalled and supported on that model, merely compatible to some extent, or still being tested. For current official status, use Valve’s device list rather than inferring certification from a manufacturer announcement or a testing reference.
