In The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered, transmogrification (also described as “re-forging”) changes the displayed appearance of eligible armor or swords without changing the statistics of the equipment Geralt is actually using. You unlock armor and sword services through separate quests, visit different smiths, and pay a reported 100–200 crowns each time you change a skin.

What transmogrification changes—and what it does not

The Remastered edition separates an item’s functional role from its visual model. Your equipped gear continues to provide its existing attributes, while the transmog system displays the appearance you selected. That means you can keep a piece of equipment because its statistics suit your build and still make Geralt look as though he is wearing or wielding another item.

Change fee PC Gamer’s September 29, 2026 guide 100–200 crowns per reported skin change; the official announcements do not list a fee.

Xbox Wire describes the feature as re-forging the look of favorite weapons and armor without sacrificing the statistics attached to preferred gear. TechRadar’s September 29, 2026 review likewise describes appearance changes that preserve the stats of the equipment being used. These descriptions establish the central rule: appearance and attributes are handled independently.

Make sure you are playing the Remastered edition

This explanation applies to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered, not automatically to older builds of Wild Hunt. CD PROJEKT RED identifies transmogrification as a Remastered feature. Xbox Wire announced September 29, 2026 as the launch date and described the Xbox Series X|S release as a free upgrade for existing owners; the publisher’s announcement also describes Remastered as free for existing owners. Availability and upgrade terms can differ by platform and edition, so check the version shown in your library or store listing before assuming the system is present.

  • Edition check: confirm that the title is labeled Remastered.
  • Platform check: the cited free-upgrade details are specifically for Xbox Series X|S; do not generalize them to another platform without checking its listing.
  • Save check: the sources reviewed do not establish whether every older save automatically receives a complete appearance collection.

The official announcements confirm that the feature exists, but they do not document every supported equipment slot, the exact interface wording, save migration behavior, or future price changes. Those details should be treated as version-sensitive rather than assumed from the original game.

Unlock armor re-forging at Crow’s Perch

PC Gamer’s September 29, 2026 guide reports that armor re-forging is handled by Yoana at Crow’s Perch. Her service becomes available after you complete the Master Armorers quest. The quest requirement is important: reaching Crow’s Perch alone is not the reported unlock condition.

  1. Play through the Master Armorers quest.
  2. Return to Crow’s Perch after the quest is complete.
  3. Find Yoana and use her armor re-forging service.
  4. Choose the armor appearance you want to display, then confirm the change and pay the quoted fee shown by the service.

The guide says armor that Geralt picks up can unlock as a skin. In other words, collecting an armor piece can expand the pool of appearances available for later use. The material reviewed does not provide a complete slot-by-slot list, nor does it say whether every historical armor item is eligible, so do not assume that a particular chest, glove, boot, or trouser model is supported until it appears in your game’s selection.

Unlock sword re-forging in Novigrad

Swords use a different smith and a different quest chain. According to PC Gamer’s guide, Éibhear Hattori in Novigrad provides sword re-forging after you complete Of Swords and Dumplings.

  1. Complete Of Swords and Dumplings.
  2. Go to Éibhear Hattori in Novigrad once the quest is finished.
  3. Open his sword re-forging service.
  4. Select the sword appearance you want displayed and confirm the change at the fee presented by the service.

As with armor, the guide reports that swords Geralt picks up unlock as skins. The available evidence does not specify whether steel and silver swords have identical appearance pools, whether every sword model can be used on both types, or whether any other weapon category is included. Treat those as open questions until the Remastered interface or a version-specific guide confirms them.

How the appearance and statistics interact in practice

Keep a statistically useful item

Suppose the sword currently equipped has the attributes you need for your build, but its model is not the look you want. Re-forging lets you retain that sword as the functional item while displaying a different sword skin you have unlocked. The same principle applies to armor: the equipped armor remains responsible for its attributes, while the chosen skin supplies the visible model.

Collect appearances without treating them as upgrades

A newly collected item can matter in two separate ways. It may be a better functional item for your current setup, and it may also add an appearance to your skin collection. Those decisions do not have to match. You can keep using the item with the most useful attributes and later display a different collected model.

Do not infer a stat change from a visual change

Changing a skin is not described as replacing the equipped item. Xbox Wire and TechRadar both frame the feature as preserving the attached statistics. If your build changes, change the functional equipment first; use re-forging to alter the look independently.

Reported cost and how to budget for it

PC Gamer reports a cost of 100–200 crowns each time a skin is changed. This is secondary reporting, not a fee stated in CD PROJEKT RED’s or Xbox Wire’s feature announcements. The sources reviewed do not explain what determines the low or high end of the range, whether the amount varies by item, or whether a later patch can change it.

Armor re-forging Yoana at Crow’s Perch Master Armorers 100–200 crowns per change, according to PC Gamer
Sword re-forging Éibhear Hattori in Novigrad Of Swords and Dumplings 100–200 crowns per change, according to PC Gamer

Because the fee is charged when you change a skin, avoid repeatedly switching appearances while testing a build. Decide which functional equipment you are keeping, choose the appearance you want for the current section of the game, and make the change once. Keep additional crowns available if you expect to revise your look often.

A practical workflow for building a consistent look

  1. Verify the version. Confirm that you are in Remastered rather than an older build.
  2. Finish the relevant unlock quest. Use Master Armorers for armor or Of Swords and Dumplings for swords.
  3. Visit the correct smith. Yoana is the reported armor contact at Crow’s Perch; Éibhear Hattori is the reported sword contact in Novigrad.
  4. Separate the two decisions. First decide which equipment supplies the attributes you need. Then decide which unlocked skin should be displayed.
  5. Check the fee before confirming. PC Gamer reports 100–200 crowns per change, but the exact amount shown in your version is the one to rely on.
  6. Record what you selected. If you change appearance frequently, note the displayed skin and the functional item separately so a later equipment swap does not accidentally change your intended look.

This process is especially useful when your preferred visual set and your preferred combat setup come from different parts of the game. It avoids sacrificing useful attributes merely to maintain a particular style.

What the available documentation does not yet establish

  • Complete slot coverage: the documented reports discuss armor and swords, but do not enumerate every armor slot or confirm other weapon categories.
  • Legacy-save behavior: no reviewed source confirms whether an older save retroactively unlocks appearances for items already collected.
  • Exact interface labels: the guide identifies the smiths and services but does not publish every menu name or controller input.
  • Permanent pricing: the 100–200 crown figure is guide-reported and may be affected by a patch or edition-specific change.
  • Cross-type compatibility: the sources do not establish whether one sword skin can be displayed on every sword type or whether armor skins cross all slots.

If one of those points matters to your setup, use the in-game service as the authority for your installed build. A missing option may indicate an incomplete quest, the wrong smith, an unsupported item category, or a version difference rather than a failure of the system.

Troubleshooting when re-forging is unavailable

The smith offers no transmog service

Check the quest prerequisite first. Yoana’s reported armor service requires Master Armorers; Hattori’s reported sword service requires Of Swords and Dumplings. Also confirm that you are speaking to the named smith, not another merchant at the same settlement.

The appearance you want is missing

The guide reports that picked-up armor and swords unlock as skins, so verify that Geralt has actually acquired the item whose model you want. The available documentation does not promise retroactive population from older saves or universal support for every model. If the item is present but absent from the list, it may be outside the currently supported category.

The price is different from 100–200 crowns

Use the amount displayed by your game. The range comes from PC Gamer’s September 29, 2026 guide, while official feature announcements do not publish a tariff. A patch, platform build, or service context could explain a different value.

The character still looks wrong after changing gear

Remember that the functional item and displayed skin are separate choices. Recheck both: equip the item that supplies the desired attributes, then revisit the appropriate re-forging service and confirm the intended appearance.

What you need to use the system

  • A copy of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered on a supported platform.
  • Completion of the relevant smith’s quest.
  • Access to Yoana at Crow’s Perch for armor or Éibhear Hattori in Novigrad for swords.
  • At least the number of crowns shown by the service; PC Gamer reports 100–200 crowns per change.
  • Previously acquired armor or swords if you want to use their models as skins.

No special controller, console accessory, repair tool, or separate add-on is identified as necessary for transmogrification. The direct product is the Remastered game itself; platform and edition availability should be checked in the listing for your region.

Bottom line

Remastered’s gear system lets you optimize Geralt’s equipment without giving up a preferred appearance. Complete Master Armorers for Yoana’s armor service, complete Of Swords and Dumplings for Éibhear Hattori’s sword service, collect the items whose models you want, and treat the displayed skin and functional equipment as two separate choices. The 100–200 crown fee is the guide-reported figure currently available, so verify the amount shown in your own build before confirming a change.
