A Goodyear Blimp is an airship. More precisely, the current Wingfoot NT is a semi-rigid airship: helium provides buoyancy, a pressurized envelope contains the lifting gas, and an internal upper frame carries structural loads. Engines and tail control surfaces let it fly under power and steer.

A hot-air balloon is a different kind of lighter-than-air aircraft. It has no engine for propulsion; a burner heats air inside its envelope, and the balloon rises or descends as that air becomes warmer or cooler. It travels with the wind rather than driving through it. The familiar Goodyear name uses “Blimp,” but that common label is not the most exact structural description of the present aircraft.

The short answer: “blimp” and “airship” are not opposites

Airship is the broad category: a powered lighter-than-air aircraft that uses buoyant gas and has propulsion and steering systems. Blimp is commonly used for a non-rigid airship, whose shape is maintained mainly by the pressure of its lifting gas and internal ballonets rather than by a complete load-bearing skeleton.

Goodyear identifies its current Wingfoot NT as semi-rigid. It has an upper internal frame, while gas pressure still maintains the envelope’s overall shape. Calling it an “airship” is therefore correct, and calling it a “Goodyear Blimp” is the established name; calling it a traditional non-rigid blimp would be structurally imprecise.

How the three terms fit together

Term What it describes Power and control
Airship The broad class of powered lighter-than-air aircraft. Engines and propellers provide propulsion; aerodynamic control surfaces provide steering.
Blimp Commonly, a non-rigid airship whose form is maintained by internal gas pressure and ballonets. Powered and steerable, like other airships.
Semi-rigid airship An airship with a load-bearing keel or frame plus a pressure-supported envelope. Powered and steerable; the Goodyear Wingfoot NT falls here.
Rigid airship An internal framework maintains the shape and supports separate lifting-gas cells. Powered and steerable, but structurally different from the Wingfoot NT.
Hot-air balloon An unpowered balloon that gets lift from heated air. No engine-driven horizontal propulsion; it moves with the wind.

The Airship Association uses these construction distinctions, while Goodyear’s own description supplies the Wingfoot NT classification. A hot-air balloon is not an airship simply because both remain aloft through buoyancy.

What makes the Goodyear Wingfoot NT an airship

Helium in a pressure-supported envelope

The Wingfoot NT uses helium rather than heated air for buoyancy. Goodyear describes an envelope made from polyurethane, polyester and a protective film. The envelope is pressurized, and an internal upper frame gives the semi-rigid craft additional structural support.

Inside, ballonets are air bags used to help maintain the envelope’s shape, trim and weight distribution. They are not the same as the burner system on a hot-air balloon. Their role is part of managing the airship’s configuration and balance inside a helium-filled envelope.

Engines provide controlled forward flight

Goodyear says the Wingfoot NT has three four-cylinder engines rated at 200 horsepower each. The company lists a top speed of up to 73 miles per hour. Those are published Goodyear specifications, not independently measured test results, and the page does not state the conditions or operating configuration behind the maximum.

Tail control surfaces act as ruddervators. Fly-by-wire electrical controls connect the pilot’s inputs to those surfaces, allowing the airship to turn and control its flight path. This powered, steerable movement is the decisive difference from a balloon drifting with the wind.

How a hot-air balloon stays up

Heating air creates lift

The Federal Aviation Administration’s definition is direct: “A balloon is a lighter-than-air aircraft that is not engine driven, and that sustains flight through the use of either gas buoyancy or an airborne heater.” A hot-air balloon uses the second method.

The FAA’s Balloon Flying Handbook explains that a burner heats the air inside the envelope. Heated air expands and becomes less dense than the surrounding atmosphere. The resulting difference in density provides buoyancy. The balloon’s three principal components are the envelope, the heater system and the basket.

Altitude changes, but not controlled cruising

A balloon pilot changes altitude by changing the temperature of the internal air. Applying the burner raises the temperature and increases lift. Allowing the air to cool reduces lift; the pilot can also vent hot air through the envelope’s opening to descend more quickly.

This gives the pilot vertical control, but it does not create an engine-driven route from one point to another. The FAA states that a balloon travels with the wind and cannot be propelled through the air in a controlled manner. Wind direction and speed at different altitudes become the practical means of choosing a general track.

The handbook uses a 77,000-cubic-foot hot-air balloon as an illustration and says the air mass inside can weigh more than 3,000 pounds. That is a technical example from FAA-H-8083-11B, not a universal weight for every hot-air balloon.

Lift, movement and structure compared

Axis Goodyear Wingfoot NT Hot-air balloon
Source of lift Helium buoyancy inside a pressurized envelope. Heated air becomes less dense than ambient air.
Horizontal movement Three engines propel the craft; tail control surfaces steer it. No engine-driven propulsion; it moves with the wind.
Structure Semi-rigid envelope with an internal upper frame and ballonets. Envelope, burner/heater system and basket.
Vertical control Goodyear’s technical description covers helium buoyancy, ballonets, trim and weight distribution; it does not present the system as a burner-driven balloon method. Heat the air to climb, let it cool or vent hot air to descend.
Steering Fly-by-wire electrical controls operate ruddervators on the tail. The pilot can select altitude bands, but the balloon remains subject to the wind’s direction and speed.

Why the Wingfoot NT is semi-rigid rather than rigid or non-rigid

Non-rigid airships

In a non-rigid airship, the envelope itself supplies the form. Helium pressure keeps it inflated, and ballonets adjust internal pressure and trim. There is no complete internal framework holding the envelope in a fixed geometric shape. This is the structural sense in which “blimp” is most often used.

Semi-rigid airships

A semi-rigid design adds a load-bearing keel or frame while retaining a pressure-supported envelope. Goodyear says the Wingfoot NT has an upper frame, which is why the company describes it as semi-rigid. The frame and envelope perform different jobs: the frame carries structural loads, and pressure in the envelope maintains its aerodynamic form.

Rigid airships

A rigid airship uses a substantial internal framework to maintain its shape. Separate lifting-gas cells are supported within that framework. The Wingfoot NT should not be described as a fully rigid Zeppelin-type craft merely because it has an internal frame; its official classification is semi-rigid.

What passengers experience differently

Powered routing versus wind-dependent routing

In the Wingfoot NT, engines and tail surfaces make a planned heading possible. The craft can be directed relative to the surrounding air, subject to the operating limits that apply to any aircraft. In a hot-air balloon, the pilot can choose when to climb or descend and can search for more favorable winds, but cannot simply point the basket toward a destination and motor there.

Gondola and basket are not interchangeable

The Wingfoot NT carries people in a gondola; Goodyear lists 12 seats. A hot-air balloon carries people in a basket suspended below the envelope. The basket is part of the FAA’s basic three-component description, alongside the envelope and heater system. These different passenger compartments reflect the different aircraft systems above them.

Different sources of buoyancy

Helium is a lifting gas that remains in the airship’s envelope. Hot air is produced by the burner and must be reheated as it cools. Therefore, “lighter-than-air” describes the common physical principle, not a shared operating procedure.

Common misunderstandings corrected

“The Goodyear Blimp is just a balloon.”

It is a balloon in the broad sense that buoyancy supports its weight, but it is an airship in the aircraft-classification sense. Its engines, propellers and ruddervators provide powered flight and steering. A hot-air balloon is the unpowered counterpart in this comparison.

“Every blimp is non-rigid.”

That is the common usage, but names and precise engineering categories do not always match. Goodyear keeps “Blimp” in the public name while identifying the current Wingfoot NT as semi-rigid. Use the official structural description when precision matters.

“The envelope is filled with hot air.”

Not on the Wingfoot NT. Goodyear describes helium buoyancy. Heating air with a burner is the lift method of a hot-air balloon, not the method described for the Goodyear airship.

“A balloon can fly anywhere if the pilot points it there.”

The FAA’s definition and handbook distinguish balloons from engine-driven aircraft. A balloon’s altitude can be controlled, but its horizontal travel is governed by the wind rather than by a propulsion system.

Which source defines which part of the comparison?

  • Goodyear’s technical material: Wingfoot NT construction, helium envelope, upper frame, ballonets, engines, speed, ruddervators, fly-by-wire controls, gondola seating and ballast figures. The publication date of the specifications page is not stated.
  • Federal Aviation Administration, “Piloted Balloons” page: the definition of a balloon as a lighter-than-air aircraft that is not engine driven; the page is marked March 2023 Update.
  • FAA Balloon Flying Handbook, FAA-H-8083-11B: the physics of heated air, the envelope/heater/basket arrangement, altitude control and wind-dependent travel. The handbook page was last updated December 23, 2024.
  • Airship Association: terminology for non-rigid, semi-rigid and rigid airships, including the roles of pressure, ballonets, frames and control surfaces.

A practical identification checklist

If you are looking at an unfamiliar lighter-than-air craft, these questions separate the categories quickly:

  1. Does it have an engine and propeller? If yes, it is operating as an airship rather than a conventional hot-air balloon.
  2. What supplies buoyancy? Helium indicates a gas airship; heated air and a burner indicate a hot-air balloon.
  3. How is the shape supported? A pressure-supported envelope suggests a non-rigid design; an envelope plus a load-bearing frame suggests semi-rigid construction; a full framework with gas cells indicates a rigid airship.
  4. How is horizontal movement achieved? Powered control surfaces indicate an airship. Wind-borne travel with altitude changes indicates a balloon.
  5. Where do people sit? A gondola is typical of an airship such as the Wingfoot NT; a suspended basket is characteristic of a hot-air balloon.

Bottom line

The Goodyear Blimp is an airship, not a hot-air balloon. The current Wingfoot NT is specifically a semi-rigid helium airship with an internal upper frame, ballonets, three engines and fly-by-wire tail controls. “Blimp” remains its familiar name, although that word often implies a non-rigid airship. A hot-air balloon uses heated air for buoyancy, has no engine-driven propulsion, and travels with the wind. The shared feature is lighter-than-air flight; the lifting medium, structure and ability to steer under power are fundamentally different.
