A mod that runs custom behavior may need Script Hook V, which gives compatible ASI plugins access to the game’s script functions. A mod that changes files stored in the game’s archives may instead need OpenIV and OpenIV.ASI, which can load modified archive copies from a mods folder. Some mods do both, so follow the requirements for the specific mod and confirm they match your PC edition of GTA V.
What Script Hook V and OpenIV each do
The tools serve different purposes. Script Hook V is for runtime script behavior; OpenIV is for working with the game’s archived files. They are not interchangeable, and a mod may require one, the other, or both.

Script Hook V runs compatible script plugins
Script Hook V is a runtime library that lets compatible ASI plugins access GTA V’s native script functions while the game is running. In the setup described by the community installation guide, ScriptHookV.dll and the ASI loader dinput8.dll are placed beside GTA5.exe, and ASI scripts go in the game folder. The mod’s own instructions determine which files it needs and where they belong.
In practical terms, look for a Script Hook V or ASI requirement when a mod adds behavior that runs in the game rather than only replacing an archived resource. Do not assume every file ending in .asi can work without the runtime and loader specified by its author.

Script Hook V is a runtime dependency, not an archive editor. It provides a compatible plugin access to game functions while GTA V runs; it does not, by itself, make a modified .rpf archive available to the game. Likewise, an archive-loading component does not replace a script runtime when a mod needs one. This is why a mod’s dependency list matters more than the name or file extension of one component.
OpenIV works with archives and modified resources
OpenIV can inspect GTA V’s .rpf archives and install .oiv packages. Its ASI Manager can install, update, or uninstall ASI Loader and OpenIV.ASI. OpenIV.ASI enables the game to read modified archive copies from a folder named mods.
This archive workflow is relevant when a mod changes game resources stored inside an archive. OpenIV is the tool used to handle those files; OpenIV.ASI is the component that lets the game load the modified archive copy. Installing OpenIV alone should not be confused with installing every component a particular mod requires.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The distinction is useful when reading an installation page: OpenIV can be the tool for opening or installing archive content, while OpenIV.ASI supports loading the altered archive copy during play. An .oiv package is an installation format OpenIV can handle; its presence does not mean that Script Hook V is automatically needed. Check the package or mod instructions for any additional runtime or loader requirements.
How to tell which dependency a mod needs
Start with the mod’s own installation instructions, not a generic list of popular tools. The type of change is a useful clue, but the author’s stated requirements and supported game edition take precedence.

A mod’s file type alone is not a complete compatibility check. Confirm that its instructions cover your GTA V edition—Legacy or Enhanced—and the game version or build it supports. A mod made for one PC edition may not work in the other.
Separate the questions when checking a mod page: what does it change, how does the game load that change, and which edition or game build does the author support? A script that runs at runtime points toward Script Hook V; a changed resource inside an archive points toward OpenIV’s archive workflow. A mod combining those kinds of changes can require both. This is a way to interpret the instructions, not a reason to skip them: authors may specify files or steps beyond the general pattern.

Set up a single-player mod installation safely
The workflow below follows the community guide’s single-player setup. It is not a procedure for GTA Online. Back up files before changing them, and add mods in a controlled way so you can identify which change caused a problem.
- Confirm the game launches and identify the edition. Check whether your PC installation is GTA V Legacy or Enhanced. Read the mod’s stated edition and version/build requirements before installing it; do not infer compatibility from the game’s name alone.
- Back up the game files you plan to change. Keep a recoverable copy before editing or replacing anything. The guide recommends backing up files but does not prescribe a storage device or a particular backup size.
- Configure OpenIV for your GTA V installation if the mod needs archive handling. In OpenIV, use Tools > ASI Manager to install ASI Loader and OpenIV.ASI when required for the archive workflow. ASI Manager also provides options to update or uninstall these components.
- Copy the original archive into a mirrored path under
mods. For example, OpenIV’s documented workflow copiesupdateupdate.rpftomodsupdateupdate.rpf. Preserve the path structure and make edits to the copy inmods, not the original archive. - Install Script Hook V files only when the mod calls for them. For a mod that requires Script Hook V, the guide places the matching
ScriptHookV.dllanddinput8.dllbesideGTA5.exe. Follow the mod author’s file-specific instructions for its ASI plugins and any additional requirements. - Test in Story Mode and add changes incrementally. First check that the game starts with the required components; then install or enable mods in a controlled sequence. If a problem appears, this makes it easier to trace it to a recent change.
You do not need to install every tool simply because it appears in a general modding checklist. If the mod only calls for an archive edit, follow its OpenIV steps; if it calls for a Script Hook V plugin, follow that runtime setup. Install both workflows only when the mod’s instructions call for both. This keeps the setup focused and gives you fewer changes to check if the game stops launching or the mod does not appear.
Why the mods folder matters
OpenIV’s workflow keeps edits in copies rather than requiring changes to the original archives. Its documentation says the folder keeps mods separate while original files remain unchanged. OpenIV.ASI is what allows the game to load modified archives from that folder; without the relevant archive-loading setup, simply placing a changed archive in mods does not establish that the game will use it.

OpenIV describes the result this way: “All of your mods will now be in their own folder, and the original files will remain unchanged.” The mirrored paths are important because the modified copy needs to correspond to the archive path the game uses. The documented example is updateupdate.rpf copied to modsupdateupdate.rpf; retain the folder structure rather than putting the archive in an unrelated location.
This separation can also help when you need to return to unmodified files: OpenIV’s guide describes switching between modified and original files by disabling OpenIV.ASI. Treat that as a recovery option for the archive workflow, not as a substitute for a backup or as a way to repair every kind of mod installation.
A backup still matters even when you use mods. The folder workflow helps keep archive edits separate, but it does not guarantee that every installation change is reversible or that a misinstalled script plugin will be fixed by disabling OpenIV.ASI. Keep a copy of files before changing them, and use the recovery step that matches the kind of change you made.
Edition and game-update compatibility
GTA V Legacy and Enhanced are separate PC editions. A mod or tool setup intended for one edition may not work with the other, so check the edition stated on each relevant mod and tool page before installing. Also check any version or build requirement the author gives.
Script Hook V compatibility can be affected by GTA V updates. A game update may interrupt compatibility until the relevant tool and mod are updated. Because compatibility is version-dependent, verify the current supported game build on the project’s release page rather than relying on an old build number or assuming a previously working setup still applies.

Compatibility is therefore a check to repeat, not just a one-time installation step. If the game updates after a mod was installed, revisit the mod and tool release pages before troubleshooting the files themselves. Do not assume a setup that worked on Legacy will work on Enhanced, or that an older compatibility note still applies to a newer game build.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep modded play out of GTA Online
Use this installation approach for single-player only. The community setup guide warns against entering GTA Online with a modded game or changed files. It also says Script Hook V closes the game if an online session is attempted and warns that playing online with changed files can lead to an account ban. Those statements are practical cautions from that guide, not a guarantee about how enforcement works in every case.
Do not treat the fact that the game closes as permission to try online play: the safe instruction is to keep mods and changed files out of GTA Online.
Troubleshoot by checking the dependency that failed
- The game stops launching after a game update: Check whether Script Hook V and the mod support the current game build. Version-dependent runtime components may need an update before the setup works again.
- A script mod does not run: Recheck whether it requires Script Hook V and the ASI loader, whether the specified files are beside
GTA5.exe, and whether the mod supports your Legacy or Enhanced edition. - An archive change does not appear in game: Confirm that the original archive was copied to the correct mirrored path under
mods, that you edited the copy rather than the original, and that OpenIV.ASI is installed when the mod’s archive workflow requires it. - You are unsure which tool is missing: Return to the mod’s installation instructions and separate its requirements into runtime scripts and archived resource changes. A mod that combines those changes may need both setups.
- You need to undo an archive-based change: Use the original files you backed up, or follow OpenIV’s described option of disabling OpenIV.ASI to switch away from modified archive copies. Add mods incrementally in future tests to narrow down the source of the issue.
Make one change at a time when isolating a failure. If several plugins and archive edits are added together, it is harder to tell which dependency or file caused the symptom. A controlled Story Mode test after each change gives you a clearer comparison with the last known working setup.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do all GTA 5 mods need Script Hook V?
No. Script Hook V is for compatible ASI plugins that need access to GTA V’s script functions while the game runs. A mod that only changes an archived resource may instead use OpenIV’s archive workflow. Follow the mod author’s listed dependencies.
Best Value
- Drive through the largest GTA environment ever -- The game has three cities players can explore, for a gaming area 5 times larger than Vice City
- Recruit new characters into a street gang and take over by leading drive-by shootings against rivals
- Steal all-new vehicles, including bicycles
- Improved fighting elements -- smoother hand-to-hand combat, plus the ability to hold a weapon in each hand
- New graphics elements as cars get dirty and even rust, the longer you drive them
Do I need OpenIV and Script Hook V together?
Only if the mod’s changes require both workflows. A mod that combines runtime script behavior with altered archived resources may need Script Hook V and OpenIV-related archive handling, including OpenIV.ASI when required. Neither tool automatically replaces the other.
Is OpenIV alone enough to load a changed archive?
Not necessarily. OpenIV handles archives and can install packages; OpenIV.ASI supports loading modified archive copies from the mods folder. Check the mod’s instructions to see which components it requires.
Can I use the same mod on GTA V Legacy and Enhanced?
Do not assume so. They are separate PC editions, and a mod made for one may not work in the other. Check the edition and any game version or build requirement stated on the mod and tool pages.
What should I check after a GTA V update?
Recheck the mod and Script Hook V project release pages for compatibility with the current game build. Updates can interrupt compatibility until the relevant tool and mod are updated; do not rely on an old build note.
Can I take this modded setup into GTA Online?
Keep this setup in single-player. The community installation guide warns against entering GTA Online with mods or changed files and warns that doing so can lead to an account ban. Do not treat a game closing as permission to try online play.
The Bottom Line
Script Hook V enables compatible runtime script plugins; OpenIV handles archives, while OpenIV.ASI supports loading modified archive copies from mods. Check each mod’s dependencies, edition and current build support, preserve backups, and keep modded play to single-player.
