How GTA 6’s Wanted System Compares With GTA 5’s (What’s Reported So Far)

GTA VI reportedly raises the wanted cap to six stars and adds visible recognition clues for clothing, faces, vehicles, and Jason and Lucia together. Here is what the pre-release reporting confirms—and what remains unknown.

Grand Theft Auto VI is reported to raise the wanted-level ceiling from GTA V’s five stars to six. The larger change may be how police identify suspects: coverage of Rockstar’s Extended Look describes visible clues for clothing, faces, the vehicle, and whether Jason and Lucia are together. Those details come from pre-release reporting and a Rockstar interview, not a complete published rulebook, so exact escalation thresholds, search timers, and cooldown behavior remain unknown.

The short version: six stars, more visible identification

GamesRadar’s 2026 report on the GTA VI Extended Look says the new game shows a six-star maximum, compared with GTA V’s five-star cap. That is the clearest numerical difference currently reported. The more consequential design shift is that police attention appears to track several forms of recognition instead of treating a suspect as a permanently anonymous target once the chase begins.

The report describes on-screen indicators for a suspect’s clothes, face, car, and whether Jason and Lucia are together. It also describes examples in which changing vehicles removes the vehicle indicator and separating the two protagonists lowers police perception of the pair. These are shown or explained examples, not proof that every wanted-system rule has been disclosed.

Rob Nelson, Rockstar North co-studio head, also says a crime must be witnessed or trigger an alarm before it is reported to law enforcement. That statement explains the reporting condition discussed in the interview; it does not establish how every crime, scripted event, or mission trigger works.

GTA V and GTA VI: what can be compared now

System element GTA V GTA VI (reported pre-release details)
Maximum wanted level Five-star cap, according to GamesRadar’s comparison. Six-star maximum shown or reported in coverage of the Extended Look.
How a crime is reported A detailed reporting-mechanics comparison is not established by the available coverage. Rob Nelson says a witness or an alarm is needed for a crime to be reported to law enforcement.
Recognition clues Detailed GTA V suspect-recognition rules are not established by the available coverage. Indicators are described for clothing, faces, the vehicle, and whether Jason and Lucia are together.
Vehicle response No sourced old-versus-new mechanical comparison is available here. The reported example says the vehicle indicator disappears after a vehicle swap and police do not recognize the new vehicle in that example.
Separating protagonists No sourced comparison is available here. Nelson says splitting up can reduce police perception of Jason and Lucia as a pair.
On-foot evasion No detailed comparison is established by the available coverage. Nelson describes leaving the streets and using alleys on foot as a useful option when a three-star city chase is difficult to escape by vehicle.
Complete escalation and cooldown rules Not assessed by the cited coverage. Exact thresholds, search duration, radii, and cooldown formulas remain unspecified.

The table is intentionally conservative. A missing GTA V detail is not evidence that GTA V lacks a mechanic, and a GTA VI example is not automatically a universal rule. The comparison separates what the current reporting actually describes from features that still need confirmation after release.

How crime reporting is described in GTA VI

A witness or alarm starts the report

Nelson’s explanation gives two routes for a crime to reach law enforcement: somebody witnesses it, or an alarm is set off. In his words, “The wanted system in GTA 6 requires that someone witness the crime, or an alarm needs to be set off for it to be reported to the law.” The quote is attributed to Nelson in GamesRadar’s 2026 coverage of the Extended Look.

This wording matters because it distinguishes committing an act from having that act reported. It suggests that police response is connected to what the world can observe or detect, rather than every hostile action instantly producing a wanted level. However, the interview does not publish a list of crimes and alarms, nor does it define how witnesses communicate information, how quickly a report spreads, or how mission scripting can override ordinary open-world behavior.

Mission logic is intended to match open-world logic

Nelson frames the goal as consistency between missions and free exploration: “Anything where a mission can become systemic and it’s a wanted level or robbery system – we try to make it so that it doesn’t feel inconsistent with how the game works in the open world.” This is a design principle, not a complete specification. It indicates that Rockstar is trying to avoid a mission-only police model that behaves differently from the surrounding city, while leaving the exact implementation unconfirmed.

What the recognition indicators could mean

Clothing

The reported interface includes clothing as one recognition clue. That makes changing an outfit potentially relevant during an escape, but the available statement does not say that swapping clothes always clears a wanted state or guarantees that officers will fail to identify a suspect. Clothing is one displayed factor among several, not a published reset button.

Face

A face indicator implies that police recognition can persist independently of the vehicle a suspect is driving. The coverage does not explain the range at which a face is identified, whether masks alter the result, how lighting or crowds affect it, or whether the indicator represents a binary state or a changing confidence level.

Vehicle

The clearest vehicle example is that the vehicle indicator disappears after a vehicle change and a police car does not recognize the new vehicle in the described situation. That supports a practical distinction between being seen in a particular car and being identified as a particular person. It does not establish that every vehicle swap works under every circumstance, especially if officers have already identified the occupants through other clues.

Jason and Lucia together

The fourth reported clue concerns whether the protagonists are together. Nelson says separating them can lower police perception of the pair. This gives the two-character structure a direct role in evasion: staying together may make the pair easier to associate, while splitting up can reduce that association. The sources do not specify how far apart they must be, whether both characters retain separate wanted states, or how reunification affects recognition.

How the reported GTA VI escape strategy works

Change the vehicle when the car is the problem

If police are tracking the vehicle rather than only the people inside it, changing cars can remove that particular clue. The reported example says the vehicle indicator disappears and a police car fails to recognize the replacement vehicle. Treat this as an observed or explained scenario from pre-release coverage, not a guarantee that stealing any nearby car immediately ends pursuit.

Split up when the pair is drawing attention

Because togetherness is described as a recognition factor, separating Jason and Lucia may reduce the police perception of them as one pair. The report presents this as a way to lower perception, not as an instant wanted-level cancellation. It also does not say whether the game always permits separation during missions or whether mission objectives can require both characters to remain together.

Leave the streets and use alleys on foot

Nelson’s advice for a difficult three-star city chase is direct: “Your best option is usually to do this – get off the streets and get on foot into the alleys.” The value of this tactic is that a vehicle can remain an obvious, trackable object in open roads, while alleys and foot movement may reduce visibility. This is advice about the system shown in the interview, not an independently tested route or a confirmed universal solution for every star level.

Use the indicators as information, not a checklist

The four clues should be read as feedback about what police may currently associate with the suspects. They are not evidence that the game uses only four pieces of evidence. A face, clothing, car, or pair indicator can disappear while another source of recognition remains active, and the available coverage does not state whether officers share information across locations or units.

What the sixth star may change—and what it does not prove

A sixth star raises the reported ceiling, but the number alone does not tell us how the pursuit escalates. No cited source supplies thresholds for moving from one star to the next, the units assigned at each level, weapon or vehicle changes, roadblocks, air support, or the length of a search. It is therefore safer to describe six stars as additional headroom in the wanted scale rather than promise a specific endgame encounter.

Likewise, a six-star maximum does not prove that GTA VI always becomes harder than GTA V in a direct, linear way. Difficulty can depend on geography, available cover, the player’s vehicle, mission restrictions, and whether police have recognized the characters personally. Until Rockstar publishes or players verify the full system, the star count is a confirmed comparison point only in the narrow sense reported by GamesRadar.

What remains unconfirmed before release

  • Exact escalation thresholds for each wanted level.
  • How long officers search after losing visual contact.
  • Whether the game uses fixed cooldown timers, variable timers, or location-based rules.
  • Search radii, dispatch behavior, and how information moves between police units.
  • Whether particular crimes always require a witness or alarm, or whether some scripted events bypass that condition.
  • Whether replacing clothes consistently changes recognition in all situations.
  • How masks, darkness, crowds, witnesses, cameras, and other possible evidence sources interact with the four displayed indicators.
  • How wanted states are shared between Jason and Lucia during cooperative control, missions, or separation.

The four visible indicators should not be treated as proof that police use no other evidence. They are selected clues described in the available coverage, not a final comprehensive rulebook.

Release context and platform information

Rockstar’s official page lists Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a release date of November 19, 2026. The game is therefore still unreleased at the time of this comparison. Retail listings, physical-edition details, stock, and purchasing terms are separate questions and are not needed to understand the wanted-system differences.

Bottom line for GTA players

Based on the current pre-release record, GTA VI’s wanted system differs from GTA V in two useful ways to remember: the reported ceiling is six stars instead of five, and police recognition is presented as a set of changing clues involving clothing, faces, vehicles, and the relationship between Jason and Lucia. The reported escape examples—switching vehicles, splitting up, and moving through alleys on foot—suggest a more situational chase than simply outrunning a fixed police response.

What cannot yet be responsibly claimed is a complete formula for losing the cops. The coverage does not establish exact timers, radii, escalation rules, or universal effects for changing clothes or cars. Until Rockstar or post-release testing documents those systems, treat the six-star count and the described recognition examples as the firm comparison points, and treat the rest as informed but limited previews.
