GTA’s wanted system is not one universal rule shared by every game or mode. In Grand Theft Auto V, Rockstar documents a one-to-five-star scale; GTA Online’s Race Creator has a separate event toggle that lets police chase racers; and reporting on Grand Theft Auto VI describes a system shaped by witnesses, alarms, recognition, and changing escape tactics. Here is what is established for each—and what should not be assumed.
How do wanted levels work in GTA V?
The official GTA V manual describes wanted status on a scale of one to five stars. One star signals minor police interest; at five stars, the National Guard is brought in. The manual establishes the display and these endpoints, but the cited description does not explain every crime-reporting trigger, escalation threshold, or pursuit behavior.

- One star: minor interest, according to Rockstar’s manual.
- Five stars: the National Guard is brought in, according to the same manual.
That is a useful overview of escalation, not a complete simulation model. The available manual description does not document identity tracking or provide numerical search radii.

GTA Online’s Race Creator includes a wanted-level setting for race events. Rockstar’s Race Creator guide says that enabling it lets police chase participants during the course. This describes a creator-controlled race option; it does not establish that every GTA Online activity or pursuit follows the same rules.

Can Lester remove a wanted level?
Rockstar’s GTA Online starter tips say players can call Lester to remove a wanted level for a fee. The cited tip does not give the fee amount or list all eligibility conditions, so those details should not be inferred from it.
What has been reported about GTA VI’s wanted system?
A 2026 GamesRadar+ report quotes Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, describing a system in which a crime needs to be witnessed or an alarm set off for it to be reported to law enforcement. Treat this as an attributed description from interview reporting, not a complete official specification of every wanted-level rule.

- The biggest, most dynamic and most diverse open world ever created and now packed with layers of new detail.
- Grand Theft Auto V blends storytelling and gameplay in new ways as players repeatedly jump in and out of the lives of the game's three lead characters, playing all sides of the game's interwoven story.
- Grand Theft Auto V also comes with Grand Theft Auto Online, the dynamic and ever-evolving Grand Theft Auto universe for multiple players.
The report describes recognition indicators tied to clothing, faces, vehicles, and whether the two protagonists are together. It also says six stars appear in gameplay. That contrasts with the five-star display documented in the GTA V manual, but the report does not supply a complete mechanical breakdown of GTA VI’s escalation states.
Recognition and pursuit are not the same as a confirmed rulebook
The report describes wanted stars changing appearance after direct contact is broken, but the meaning of that color change is interpretive rather than a fully documented state definition. It is safer to say the reported presentation signals a change than to claim exactly what police know or do at each stage.

Why changing escape tactics matters
Nelson is quoted advising that a three-star pursuit in the city can make escape by car difficult, and that leaving the streets on foot for alleys may be a better choice. He also describes running, getting out of a car, climbing fences, and navigating the world as intended options. These are developer comments reported by GamesRadar+, not independent play-test findings or a guaranteed escape formula.

| System | What the cited source establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| GTA V | Rockstar’s manual describes one to five stars, with one star indicating minor interest and five stars bringing in the National Guard. | The cited manual description does not explain reporting triggers, identity tracking, exact thresholds, or search radii. |
| GTA Online race events | Rockstar’s Race Creator guide says enabling the wanted-level setting lets police chase racers during the course. | It does not show that all Online pursuits work like race events. |
| GTA VI reporting | GamesRadar+ reports Nelson’s account of witness-or-alarm reporting, recognition indicators, six stars in gameplay, and escape options. | The report is not a complete official mechanical specification, and it does not verify precise pursuit-state semantics. |
These examples show distinct approaches to communicating and shaping a pursuit: a documented star scale, a mode-specific race setting, and reported emphasis on reporting and recognition. They are not enough to conclude how every other open-world game handles police or to establish one GTA-wide formula.
