LEGO Horizon Adventures began with a translation problem: how do you bring the machines, landscapes and serious themes of Horizon Zero Dawn into a playful LEGO action-adventure? Guerrilla Games, Studio Gobo and the LEGO Group approached it by finding the recognizable identity of Horizon’s world, then rebuilding its tone, characters and machines around LEGO’s possibilities.
Who made LEGO Horizon Adventures?
Guerrilla Games and Studio Gobo co-developed LEGO Horizon Adventures, with the LEGO Group also credited as a co-developer in Guerrilla’s launch announcement. The LEGO Group described the game as inspired by the events of Horizon Zero Dawn. Its story follows Aloy from her upbringing with Rost as she sets out to discover her destiny. The LEGO Group’s June 2024 announcement introduced the game, and Guerrilla’s November 2024 launch post confirmed its release.
How did the teams adapt Horizon’s story and tone?
The developers set out to preserve a sense of Horizon’s world while making the experience lighter and more playful. Studio Gobo Senior Producer Kat Woolley described the challenge as bringing something serious from Horizon into LEGO, then adding humor, light-heartedness, silliness and play. That is a tonal choice, not a claim that the adaptation retains every plot element from Horizon Zero Dawn.
Guerrilla Design Director Stephane Varrault pointed to a human connection between the stories: characters seeking family, a home and meaningful relationships. In the team’s account, those themes could carry into the LEGO adventure even as its presentation became more comic and accessible. The PlayStation Blog’s behind-the-scenes feature includes both developers’ perspectives.

How did they build Aloy’s world, one brick at a time?
LEGO construction became a way to make design decisions, not just a visual finish. Guerrilla Art Director Roy Postma said the team initially rebuilt Old World buildings in a realistic style. The direction shifted after someone placed an official LEGO set in the background: the team saw that a LEGO version of the world could work and fit the setting.
The PlayStation Blog feature says the game’s world is made from LEGO elements, from machines and treasure chests to Mother’s Heart, the village players can customize. That describes the game’s digital art direction; it does not mean every in-game object can be reproduced exactly with any collection of physical bricks.

How did Horizon’s machines become LEGO machines?
Machines offered a practical test of whether the adaptation could retain Horizon’s character while changing its form. Studio Gobo Game Design Lead Toño Gonzalaz said, “Throughout development, we started by imagining what a LEGO version of each machine would actually look like,” while Varrault said the designers considered each machine’s traits and behavior and asked how it could work with LEGO bricks.
The Shell-Walker illustrates that approach. Its defensive behavior and care for its cargo informed a personality that the developers described as mean and defensive, but funny. LEGO Creative Lead Frédéric Andre compared the process to Guerrilla’s own machine design: start with a skeleton, then build up armor and detail. The result is not simply a machine rendered in plastic-like pieces; its recognizable behavior also helps shape the LEGO character.

How do customization and co-op shape the game?
The developers described player freedom as a design pillar. Players can customize characters and Mother’s Heart, turning the village into a place that reflects their own choices. Varrault said, “One of our main pillars in the game is player freedom, which is why we built systems where no combat is the same, but also why we wanted to provide really open ways to customize your characters and the world. For example, we really wanted Mother’s Heart to be a reflection of players’ creativity to recreate the village of their dreams.”
The game supports solo play or two-player co-op, either locally on the couch or online, without split-screen play. Guerrilla’s launch announcement also describes difficulty options ranging from Story Mode to Very Hard, giving players a choice in how demanding the action feels. The design goal for co-op, as described by the developers, was to let players respond to one another and take on the wilds together.

What did Studio Gobo later discuss about making the game?
At GDC 2025, Guerrilla’s schedule listed seven Studio Gobo sessions on LEGO Horizon Adventures. Their subjects included AI combat with robot dinosaurs, procedural optimization, world art, cinematics, procedural generation with design in mind, design, and UI identity. The schedule shows the range of craft and technical areas the team discussed publicly; it does not establish specific methods, performance results or production figures. Varrault described working with bricks as a useful discipline for designers: “Working with LEGO bricks and trying to replicate all the machines in this universe forces you to think about abstraction, and abstraction is good for a designer because you start to think about the essence of fun. It’s about going back to the essentials.” Studio Gobo Senior Producer Kat Woolley saw the physical set as another way for players to create stories of their own. The PlayStation Blog’s set feature describes its contents and the developers’ perspectives.
