Guitar Hero-style games use an authored chart of timed actions—not a live analysis of the song—to tell you what to play. In the standard five-fret layout, colored gems map to the controller’s colored fret buttons; you hold the indicated fret or frets and strum as each gem reaches the strike line.
What a note chart represents
The song audio provides what you hear; the chart provides timed gameplay instructions for an instrument and difficulty. A gem is not necessarily a literal guitar pitch, and a chart is not conventional guitar tablature. Music scholar Kiri Miller described the distinction this way: “the transcription is telling you how to play it on the guitar controller, and not how to play it on the electric guitar.” That explanation appears in a 2014 Cambridge University Press discussion of Guitar Hero and Rock Band.
Chart authors shape musical material into patterns that work with the controller and feel satisfying to play. They may simplify or reshape a recorded part for a particular difficulty. As a result, a chart is not an objective, note-for-note transcription of every instrument in the recording.
How the song becomes playable chart data
In the documented Clone Hero format, a song folder includes audio and metadata as well as a notes.mid chart. That MIDI file can contain a tempo map, instrument tracks, note events, and other chart information. The format uses multiple tracks and a ticks-per-quarter timing resolution.

In MIDI, Note On and Note Off events indicate when a note begins and ends; events also carry a key number and velocity. The rhythm game interprets those events according to its chart format, tracks, and gameplay rules. A displayed green gem, for example, should not be read simply as a standard guitar pitch: it is part of an instruction set the game maps to player actions.
Chart events are positioned against the song’s timing. During play, the game displays them moving toward a strike line at a visual speed chosen for the highway. The chart determines what action is due and when; the highway helps you judge the timing.

How five-fret notes map to the controller
In the common five-fret layout, the five lanes run green, red, yellow, blue, and orange, matching the controller’s five fret buttons. When a note reaches the strike line, press the matching fret button and strum. For a chord, hold the indicated combination of frets and strum at the same time.
The game accepts input within a timing tolerance around the strike line, commonly called the hit window. Strumming when no note is due can break a combo. Exact timing tolerance and visual conventions vary by game and chart format.

Note types and what you do

These are common conventions, not a guarantee that every game renders or handles each note identically. Check the instructions for the specific title if a symbol or rule differs.
Five-fret and six-fret controllers are different
Most classic Guitar Hero-style play uses five colored fret buttons. Guitar Hero: Live instead introduced a six-fret layout, arranged as three lanes with two button positions per lane. Its physical mapping differs from the conventional five colored buttons, so a six-fret controller and chart should not be assumed to match five-fret play.

Clone Hero is a documented example of a game supporting multiple input styles and chart formats; it should not be treated as proof that every Guitar Hero release uses the same chart system or controller rules. Release, platform, chart, and controller specifics can differ.

No. Clone Hero’s manual lists keyboard, traditional gamepad, compatible guitar, and drums as possible inputs. A keyboard or gamepad can provide input without a guitar-shaped instrument. A guitar controller offers fret buttons and a strum bar that correspond directly to the familiar five-fret actions.

If you are choosing an instrument, compare the layout, exact model, connection, and the game and platform you plan to use. “Guitar Hero guitar” is not enough information to establish compatibility.
