A Gunicorn Unix socket is a filesystem path that a local reverse proxy, usually nginx, opens to send requests to your application. In a systemd deployment, put the application socket in /run, have systemd create it with deliberate owner, group, and mode settings, and configure nginx to use exactly the same path. Keep Gunicorn’s separate control socket distinct from this application endpoint.

What a Gunicorn socket file is
Gunicorn can listen on either a TCP address or a Unix-domain socket. The Unix form is selected with --bind unix:PATH (or -b unix:PATH). Instead of opening a port such as 127.0.0.1:8000, Gunicorn creates a socket node at the path you specify. A local process connects to that node through the operating system’s Unix-socket interface.

If no PORT environment variable is defined and you do not provide another bind setting, Gunicorn’s documented default is 127.0.0.1:8000. A Unix socket is therefore an alternative transport for the proxy hop, not a different application server. Your WSGI or ASGI application and Gunicorn workers still handle requests in the same way.
Why deployments use one
- Local endpoint: the socket exists in the local filesystem, so the proxy connection does not require a listening TCP port on an interface.
- Filesystem access control: owner, group, mode bits, and parent-directory permissions determine which local processes can connect.
- Service lifecycle: systemd can create and remove runtime state as services start, stop, and boot.
- Simple proxy configuration: nginx points directly to the same path Gunicorn or systemd owns.
A Unix socket is not a regular file containing requests or application data. It is a kernel-managed endpoint represented by a pathname. Do not place application code, logs, or persistent data in it, and do not expect the socket to survive a reboot as a useful object.

Where to store gunicorn.sock
Use /run for a system-managed service
For a service started by systemd, the conventional location is a runtime directory under /run, such as /run/gunicorn.sock. The directory is intended for transient state and is normally recreated during boot. This avoids leaving a stale socket in your source tree and makes ownership and cleanup part of service management.
The current Gunicorn deployment example uses ListenStream=/run/gunicorn.sock in a systemd socket unit and points nginx to that same path. An older documented pattern uses a subdirectory, /run/gunicorn/socket, with RuntimeDirectory=gunicorn in the service and a tmpfiles.d rule such as:

Choose one path, create its parent directory through systemd or an equivalent boot-time mechanism, and use that exact path everywhere. A project directory can work for a development process or a deliberately self-managed service, but it requires explicit directory creation, stale-socket cleanup, ownership handling, and boot ordering. It is usually less robust than a service-managed runtime path.
Do not treat the socket as durable application state
/run is runtime storage. After a reboot, the old pathname may be absent until the socket unit or Gunicorn service starts. Your deployment should therefore recreate the endpoint automatically rather than relying on a socket left behind from an earlier process. If you put the socket under a project directory, you take responsibility for removing an obsolete node before rebinding and for ensuring that every parent directory exists before startup.
How permissions, users, and groups work
The nginx worker account must be able to open the socket and traverse every directory above it. A socket mode alone is not enough: a directory with no execute (search) permission for the nginx user or its group will still cause a failure.

The official systemd example sets:

SocketMode=0660Mode 0660 grants read and write access to the owner and group while denying access to other users. Some deployments use 0600 when only one account should connect; that is appropriate only if nginx runs as the socket owner (or another mechanism gives it access). Distribution defaults differ: Debian commonly runs nginx as www-data, while other operating systems may use a different account. Confirm the actual worker user in your nginx configuration and set the socket owner and group intentionally.

- Group: a group shared by the proxy and, when necessary, the service account.
- Mode: normally
0660for owner and group access, or0600for a single trusted user. - Parent directories: each directory in the path must permit the nginx account to search ( traverse) it.
Grant no broader access than the proxy requires. Making the socket world-writable may hide a configuration mistake while allowing unintended local processes to submit requests to your application.
Configuring systemd socket activation
Socket activation separates the listening endpoint from the Gunicorn process. systemd creates the Unix socket early, can keep it available while the service is restarted, and starts Gunicorn when a connection arrives. Gunicorn’s documentation describes this behavior directly: “systemd can create a UNIX socket and launch Gunicorn on demand.”
Create the socket unit
- Create
/etc/systemd/system/gunicorn.socket. - Add a
[Socket]section with one canonical path and its access settings:

WantedBy=sockets.target- Ensure the service unit is named
gunicorn.service(or adjust the socket unit’s association) so systemd can pair the two units. - Reload unit files and enable the socket at boot:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now gunicorn.socketYour service unit should start Gunicorn with the application settings required by your project and should be associated with the socket unit. Whether Gunicorn receives an inherited descriptor or binds directly depends on the service design; do not configure two competing listeners for the same path.
Alternative: let Gunicorn create the socket
You can omit socket activation and bind Gunicorn directly:

gunicorn --bind unix:/run/gunicorn.sock myproject.wsgi:applicationIn that arrangement, the service must create the parent directory, choose a umask or equivalent permissions, and remove or replace an obsolete socket when restarting. The nginx configuration remains the same as long as the resulting path and permissions match.
Connecting nginx to the socket
nginx must reference the exact pathname, including every directory component. The documented proxy form is:

}If your nginx version or configuration uses a URI suffix, preserve the syntax required by that version; the essential requirement is that the upstream endpoint resolves to the same Unix socket Gunicorn or systemd created. A typo such as /run/gunicorn/socket versus /run/gunicorn.sock produces a connection failure even when Gunicorn workers are healthy.
Gunicorn also documents Unix-socket use with nginx for the uWSGI protocol. That is a protocol choice separate from the socket’s filesystem location: configure nginx’s upstream protocol to match the way Gunicorn is serving your application.

Work through the layers in order rather than changing permissions at random.

1. Verify the units and processes
systemctl status gunicorn.socket
systemctl status gunicorn.serviceA disabled socket unit, a failed service, or a service that exits before binding leaves no usable endpoint. Read the unit’s recent journal entries to identify import errors, missing virtual environments, invalid working directories, or permission failures.
2. Inspect the path and its parent
ls -l /run/gunicorn.sock
namei -l /run/gunicorn.sockThe first command shows the socket’s owner, group, and mode. The second displays permissions on each parent directory. If the node is absent, check whether the parent directory was created and whether the service is configured to create it at boot.
3. Check that nginx uses the same string
Compare the ListenStream value (or Gunicorn’s --bind argument) character by character with nginx’s proxy_pass. Relative paths, alternate symlinks, and a socket created in a different namespace can all point nginx somewhere else.
4. Test as the proxy account
The official deployment guide demonstrates a direct check using the nginx account:
sudo -u www-data curl --unix-socket /run/gunicorn.sock httpRun the test with the account that actually owns nginx workers on your distribution. A permission error indicates ownership, mode, or parent-directory traversal; a connection refusal or missing endpoint indicates that no listener is currently accepting connections at that path. If the socket responds directly but nginx still returns an upstream error, inspect nginx’s error log and proxy protocol settings.

5. Look for stale or conflicting sockets
A pathname can remain after an unclean shutdown, but a stale node is not a live listener. Stop the relevant units before removing an obsolete socket, then start the intended unit again. Do not delete a socket that an active service is using simply to make an error disappear.

The socket used by nginx carries application requests. Gunicorn’s control interface is different and is used by the gunicornc utility for runtime management, such as inspecting workers or requesting a graceful action.

If XDG_RUNTIME_DIR is not set, the fallback is $HOME/.gunicorn/gunicorn.ctl. Do not point nginx at this control path, and do not grant it the broad access intended for a web-facing proxy endpoint. Limit control-socket ownership and mode to the administrators or service account that needs management access.

Choose a Unix socket when the proxy and Gunicorn run on the same host and you want filesystem-based access control with systemd-managed lifecycle. Choose TCP when the consumer is on another host, when your platform expects a network endpoint, or when a Unix pathname cannot be shared between the processes. The documentation does not establish a universal performance advantage, so base the decision on topology, security boundaries, and operations rather than an assumed speed difference.
Deployment checklist
- Define one canonical application socket path, preferably under
/runfor a system service. - Create the parent directory through systemd runtime settings or a tmpfiles.d rule.
- Set
SocketUser,SocketGroup, andSocketModedeliberately. - Confirm the nginx worker account can traverse every parent directory and open the socket.
- Use the identical path in systemd or Gunicorn and nginx.
- Enable the socket or service for boot and test a restart plus a reboot.
- Keep the application socket separate from
gunicorn.ctl. - When troubleshooting, check unit status, path ownership, parent permissions, and a direct request as the proxy user before loosening access.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I keep gunicorn.sock inside my project directory?
Yes, but you must manage directory creation, ownership, stale-socket cleanup, and boot ordering yourself. A system-managed path under /run is generally safer for production because it is recreated as runtime state.
What does mode 0660 mean for a Gunicorn socket?
It grants read and write access to the socket owner and group and denies access to other users. The nginx worker must be the owner or belong to the assigned group, and it must be able to traverse the parent directories.
Why does nginx fail when the socket file exists?
The node may be stale, nginx may reference a different path, the parent directory may block traversal, or the socket protocol and permissions may not match. Check both systemd/Gunicorn configuration and test access as the nginx account.
