There is no single fall height that every Minecraft mob can survive. In Java Edition, ordinary fall damage depends on how far a mob falls and how much health it has; some mobs are immune. As a practical reference, a fall of about 23.5 blocks is lethal to an unarmored mob with 20 health points, but the threshold varies by mob and circumstances.
How fall damage determines whether a mob survives
The simplified fall-damage formula is max(0, fall distance − 3). Under the damage reference’s stated assumptions, a mob with 20 health points is killed by a 23.5-block fall; for an entity without relevant effects, armor, or fall immunity, the reference describes lethal distance as health plus 3.5. This is a useful rule of thumb, not a universal calculator for every mob or situation. Minecraft Wiki’s damage reference
How many blocks can common mobs fall and survive?
The following are Java-oriented practical lethal-drop values from the Minecraft Wiki mob-grinder guide, not guaranteed cutoffs for every instance or version. A mob falling less than its listed lethal height may survive; the figures also do not account for armor, unusual contact, or other changes to its health or damage.
| Mob | Listed lethal fall | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| Cave spider | 15 blocks | Reference value; collisions and version differences can affect the outcome. |
| Spider | 19 blocks | A spider can catch against a wall and take less damage, making a narrow shaft unreliable. |
| Skeleton | 23.5 blocks | Armor or other health changes can leave survivors. |
| Creeper | 23.5 blocks | Armor or other health changes can leave survivors. |
| Zombie | 23.5 blocks | Armor or other health changes can leave survivors. |
| Witch | 29 blocks | A 24-block drop may leave a witch alive. |
| Enderman | 43 blocks | It may teleport after the drop, so a farm needs to account for that. |
These values are from the Minecraft Wiki mob-farm guide and its legacy reference. Treat them as Java-oriented guidance, not a Bedrock threshold chart or a guarantee for every mob instance.

Which Minecraft mobs are immune to fall damage?
The Java Edition fall-damage immunity list includes the following mobs. An ordinary drop will not kill them through fall damage, regardless of how high it is.

- Blaze
- Cat
- Chicken
- Ghast
- Happy ghast
- Iron golem
- Magma cube

Why did a mob survive a 23-block drop?
- The mob has more health or armor. Armor can raise survivability, so a height that kills an ordinary example may not kill an equipped one.
- A spider touched a wall. Wall contact can reduce its fall damage; a shaft designed around a simple height calculation may not work reliably.
- The landing surface changed the damage. A stalagmite amplifies fall damage, so its result will differ from an ordinary landing.
- The edition or version differs. The listed mob thresholds are Java-oriented, and exact behavior can depend on the game version.
Mojang’s Java Edition 1.21.5 release notes include the fix “MC-167125 – Rounding error on fall damage.” That version-specific fix is another reason not to treat older exact-height measurements as universal. Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.5 release notes

How to choose a mob-farm drop height
- Identify the mob and edition. Use a Java-oriented threshold only for a Java farm; the cited references do not establish a current Bedrock height table.
- Decide the intended result. A drop meant to kill every mob needs more margin than one meant to leave ordinary mobs weak enough to finish off.
- Account for the farm’s conditions. Consider armor, effects, wall contact—especially for spiders—and the landing block.
- Check the exact game version and test the design. Mojang’s Java 1.21.5 notes document a fall-damage rounding fix, so verify a precise build in the version you play.
