What kind of game is IMMORTAL: Gates of Pyre?
SunSpear Games describes IMMORTAL: Gates of Pyre as a free-to-play battle strategy game in which players lead armies against opponents’ bases. Its central structure is RTS: players command forces and fight over the destruction of enemy bases, while Immortal commanders add distinctive abilities and strategic choices. That combination gives the game some MOBA-style character identity, but the developer and Steam classify it as an RTS or battle strategy game rather than a conventional MOBA. How does the MOBA influence fit into an RTS?
In a February 15, 2025 developer blog, SunSpear said it wanted to bring two things it valued in MOBAs—strong character identity and the strategic combinations created by distinct ability kits—into a game centered on large armies. The team says it explored making Immortals persistent hero units, then shifted to treating them as commanders who can influence a battle without making army control secondary. Immortals are commanders, not permanent hero units
SunSpear’s FAQ says Immortals are not hero units that remain on the field like a conventional MOBA character. They appear on the battlefield to use abilities, and each Immortal contributes a distinct kit and two unique faction units called Vanguards. In practical terms, the design puts character selection and ability timing alongside army composition, rather than asking players to control a single hero as their main battlefield piece. The studio explains this distinction in its FAQ.

Team composition and ability choices
The stated MOBA-like element is therefore less about copying a MOBA match structure and more about choosing commanders whose abilities and Vanguards shape a team’s options. In team games, those choices can contribute to complementary compositions; the precise balance and available combinations cannot be judged from the current store description alone.
Which modes and features are listed?
SunSpear’s site lists 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, and co-op. Steam describes both PvE and competitive PvP and lists online PvP and online co-op among its features. The Steam page also names Build Assist and accessibility features, but it does not provide a detailed inventory of those accessibility options.

Is it designed to be accessible to new RTS players?
SunSpear’s FAQ describes its philosophy as “opt-in complexity”: automation is intended to help newcomers, while more experienced players can take control of systems and optimize them. The FAQ gives automatic worker production as an example, and Steam separately lists Build Assist. The FAQ dates to March 17, 2021, so its description should be read as the studio’s stated design approach, not as a complete audit of the current game or a guarantee that every described feature is available in a released build.
When does IMMORTAL: Gates of Pyre release?
As of October 8, 2026, the Steam listing says the game is not yet available on Steam and gives its release date as to be announced. SunSpear Games, Inc. is listed as both developer and publisher. What has SunSpear said about monetization?
A March 17, 2021 FAQ describes the studio’s intended model: purchasable Immortals, a free rotation and ways to unlock Immortals through play, cosmetic skins, and a Sagas battle pass. SunSpear also said it wanted to avoid paid loot boxes and purchases that would undermine competitive play. These are dated plans, not confirmation of the final or current economy; the game remains unavailable on Steam as of October 8, 2026.
