Chara is the first human to fall into the Underground and belongs to the story’s past; Frisk is the later human the player controls. They have no established family or friendship bond with each other. The game links them through its opening name prompt and the moment Asriel initially mistakes Frisk for Chara.
Are Chara and Frisk the same person?
No. The game distinguishes them through its chronology and the True Pacifist ending: Chara lived in the Underground before Frisk arrived, and Asriel eventually recognizes that the human before him is not Chara.
The confusion is understandable. At the start, the player is asked to name the fallen human, and it is easy to assume that the name belongs to the protagonist. But the prompt refers to Chara. The playable protagonist’s name is revealed later as Frisk.
Who is Chara?
Chara is the first human to fall into the Underground. Toriel and Asgore take Chara in, and Chara grows especially close to their son, Asriel. He describes Chara as his closest friend, and their shared home and history make their relationship sibling-like.

Chara later dies. The circumstances and the Dreemurr family’s history are disclosed gradually through dialogue, memories, and the True Lab tapes. Chara is therefore part of the events that happened before the player begins Frisk’s journey.
Who is Frisk?
Frisk is the human who arrives in the Underground later and the character the player controls for the adventure. The True Pacifist ending reveals Frisk’s name when Asriel asks and Frisk answers. His response—“That’s… A nice name.”—follows the reveal.

Frisk’s thoughts and personality are left relatively open to player choice. That openness does not make Frisk and Chara the same person: the ending’s recognition scene explicitly separates them.
Why does Asriel mistake Frisk for Chara?
When Asriel first encounters Frisk, he is overwhelmed by memories of Chara and briefly treats Frisk as though they are the person he lost. As the scene continues, he understands that Frisk is someone else. It is a moment of mistaken recognition, not evidence that the two humans are one character.

Did I name Frisk at the beginning?
No: the opening asks you to enter the fallen human’s name, which is Chara’s. Frisk’s name comes later in the True Pacifist ending. The sequence deliberately blurs the distinction between the player, the name they enter, and the protagonist they guide, which helps explain why the reveal surprises many players.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Chara Frisk’s narrator?
That is a fan interpretation, not a confirmed fact about the game. Some players read certain route-specific text and object descriptions as evidence that Chara narrates parts of the adventure. The narrator’s identity is not definitively established, so it is safest to describe this as a theory rather than canon.
